Top Amazon Reviews

  • Fairly pleased with it so far
Color: White Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
My main central a/c broke, and I'll need some portables for next summer. Fall is a great time to buy a/c's, so I was shopping for a good discount. Saw this, with is double the price as new, and after reading reviews for the new one, I see why they have refurbs. Apparently the fragile plastic tabs on the hose can break if you aren't careful, and Midea had no process to replace a broken plastic hose end so they had the customers ship the entire thing back as a return, and then send an entire new one. It's also probably louder than what you want in a bedroom. When it starts up, it sounds like a car dragging a muffler. Really loud and that would wake the dead. I didn't get much noise from it after that start. These might also be warehouse club returns. Lots of bad actors buy an a/c at the start of the summer and exploit the return policies to return them in the fall. I'm going to use this in a large downstairs living space that has no way to close off the rooms. You can walk around it in a big circle with a central wall in the middle, like a big oval. Its easily 2x the size that this claims to cool, but we'll mostly be in the room that it's in. So the compressor will run non stop in the mid summer and struggle to keep up late in the day once the house heats up. I'm fine with that. But I wanted an inverter unit that was high efficiency, and I wanted the largest feasible portable unit. This fit the bill for half price. Just be careful with the plastic tabs, know that it's a bit loud, and make sure the drain plugs are in. I found one of those in the bottom of the box. One thing I want to check is that it might actually have water in the drain pan, which doesn't seem to be removable. Looks like you have to connect a drain hose to it and run that outside, so I'm going to get to that another day. Experience with buying: The item shipped from a Midea refurbishing plant in the northeast, and took about a week to get to me on the west coast. The packaging is labeled in print as a refurbished unit (not a sticker), so they must refurb a ton of these. It looks and was packed as though it was new. Might be all new accessories. I'd bet that a bunch of these had trouble with the hose or said "nope" when they heard the noise. It needs to be square in front of the window you're going to connect it up to, and it needs to point in the same direction as the window. Your side to side options are extremely limited by the length of the hose and its lack of flexibility. Also, it's a weird hose. Its a big oval, and the exhaust tube is inside of the intake tube. So smaller round hose inside of a big oval one. That means no insulating the hose, although I may velcro 2 or 3 of the 7" insulation tubes for portables. I think that two velcro'd to each other would make it around this. Otherwise you're going to have hot intake air from outside heated by that internal exhaust. If air circulating in the room is running over that hose, it'll warm the room a bit. It's also not a mistake to lay a drape or hang a blanket over the hose to limit air flow across it. I unboxed it. Take the straps off, and the top will lift off. If it sticks or gives you trouble coming off, open the top and take out the accessories and it'll come off easy. Plugged it in and ran it for an hour, noting the loud compressor sound at startup and an odd slap/splash sound that sure sounded like water sloshing around in it. I went to my phone to set it up, and my pixel 8 pro had already seen it, hooked it to my wifi and made it a device in google home, so I can use the phone or my google home assistant speaker to turn it on and off and change the temp. Super handy. I downloaded the Midea app too, but 3 days later they still haven't confirmed my email so I can't log in or use that. If and when I DO get that to go, I'll update this review. By the way, I never read the manual. It all just happened and I only needed to click "next" a few times on my phone. Usually I equate the feature "Comes with an app" with "You're going to fight to get this to work and then it won't work well". Not this time! So far, half price seven hundred dollar portable, bought at the right time. Perfect for a living space, might be too loud for a bedroom, put the hose parts together gently and wrap all of the hose seams/connections/tabs with that metal tape that comes on a roll to seal ductwork. That'll stop the inevitable leaks and help support the plastic parts. The unit in my bedroom is a "Gasbye", which aren't in stock as of this writing. $500 and its also an inverter 14K btu unit, although the more valid capabilities of it is only about 10K btus while this one comes in at 12K btus. The Gasbye is incredibly quiet, I'm a light sleeper and its never woken me. So if you're looking for a big portable for the bedroom, I'd recommend that once its back in stock. No phone or app or google home support though. Just a remote. ... show more

  • You get what you pay for
Color: White Size: 14,000 BTU with Heat
Why did you pick this product vs others?: Hands down the best portable AC available. It costs a little more than the others but it's much more efficient. My electric bill is lower and it's quiet.

  • Serious performance flaws
Color: White Size: 14,000 BTU with Heat
I got a moderately good "deal" on this Midea portable heat-pump, so I decided to keep it, even though it has turned out to have some serious performance flaws. Pros: • It does cool/heat (I have not tried dehumidify). I have it in a small room (~150 ft^2) so I can't vouch for its ultimate suitability for the rated capacity (550 ft^2). • The (iPhone) app works well. It shows extra information, not displayed on the machine or the remote control, such as current room and outside air temperatures. Cons: • The remote control is inscrutible. I'm trying to use it as a remote temperature sensor (to complement the machine's built-in sensor). No idea whether that feature is working or not. The display on the remote control correctly tracks the room's temperature, but there is no user feedback to indicate whether that info is making it back to the machine's "brain". • About that "brain": it is deranged! The thermostatic control of room temperature is entirely random. It will continue cooling 10°F below the setpoint in the summer and heat 10°F above the setpoint in the winter. Basically, you, yourself, must be the thermostatic controller. I'm sitting near the unit and constantly have to override (turn on/off) the unit when it goes rogue. For instance, just now (heating mode in January) the temperature setpoint was 64°F and the inside room temperature (according to both the remote control and the iPhone app) was 74°F; still, the machine decided to start-up (with a shudder) to add more heat to the room; what is it thinking! It "knows" the room temperature is already 10 degrees above the setpoint!!! • Although, the unit can be turned on and administered remotely (via web app), that would be foolhardy, as the unattended temperature swings could be wild. • The inverter motor--or, rather, its controller--doesn't work very well. When the machine reaches what it thinks is satisfactory room temperature (see comment above) it will stop the compressor, rather than throttling it back to a lower power. Then, when it needs to resume, the compressor starts up with a heavy shudder (power surge)...just like any other non-inverter A/C. • I doubt it is thermodynamically efficient, although I have no way of independently measuring/verifying. When the compressor is running, the machine sucks in room air, that is, a significant portion of the compressor loop's ingested air comes from the room interior, not from the outside vent. How do I know this? If I leave the door to the room unlatched, when the compressor turns on it pulls the door open ~4 inches. If I latch the door, I can see that the machine is sucking air into the room using a flow telltale (piece of tissue paper) under the door. It wouldn't help to place a towel under the door because the suction just pulls air into the room from elsewhere (wall/ceiling gaps, window flashing, etc.) This is a heat flow "leak" because the machine is pulling warm (in the summer) or cold (in the winter) air into the room whose temperature it is meant to control. This means it has to heat/cool the "leaked" air, in addition to the ambient air in the room. When just the fan circulating room air is running (but the compressor is off) there is not suction into the room. It is a flaw in (what should be) an entirely closed external airflow loop. A serious hit to efficiency. • One of the condensate outlets is broken on the inside. So, when I hookup a hose to the threaded output, the condensate water drips out of the bottom and onto the floor. I had to elevate the machine to put a drip pan underneath it...and empty that pan daily. I probably should have returned this unit for a full refund. But I was suckered into keeping it because it was a pretty good price for a cutting edge (heat pump) home technology. Caveat emptor! ... show more
