  • Updating my review. My AT&T Duo is now unlocked and it's a brilliant device!
Hard Disk Size: 256 GB
UPDATE: I left my original review but I wanted to update this. After a lot, I mean A LOT, of work I was able to get my device unlocked. I posted an answer in the questions section for anybody that wants to know how. I just don't wanna retype it 😅. I don't know if it's still a headache to get it unlocked but if you aren't afraid of a little work to make that happen, the duo is a fantastic phone. It's a brilliant device for reading, gaming and just about everything else. Let's get the negatives out of the way. It doesn't have the latest processor or even the one right before that. It runs the 855 and has 6gb or RAM. Is that a big deal? Nope. It handles everything I throw at it with no slowdown. The screen can, very rarely, get a little weird where one side will be on and the other won't. Scared me the first time. Close the device and reopen it and it's all fixed though. It's a small glitch but Microsoft releases patches once a month and the phone is way better than it was even a month ago before the last one. Also we'll be getting Android 11 at some point which is supposed to work way better with this kinda device. It can be a little unwieldy to use one handed. They've got lots of stuff to make that easier but I find I just prefer to use both hands. Skip the cases for this one. Most of them aren't very good. The bumper is kinda cool and you can remove it a reapply it a couple of times if your careful with it. The only other downside I can think of kinda relates to the size again. Any car mount, aside from maybe a tablet mount if you just happen to have that, will probably not work. The only one I could find is the one from Vicseed here on Amazon and it only works on the widest setting when the duo is folded over and using only one screen. Ok bad stuff over. On to the positives. The phone, even folded is wide, like really wide. That makes reading, writing notes, and anything on the internet so much better. I've had galaxy note phones and they didn't come anywhere even remotely close to how good the note taking is. You do have to have your own stylus and I wouldn't use a cheap one but if you already have a surface pen or something similar it'll work. Two weeks after I started using my Duo I wrote and gave a presentation from it. I won't go back to a tablet. The other benefit to it being such a wide device is reading. So many devices are getting taller and skinnier (I'm looking at you Sony with your 21:9 nonsense (sorry I ramble😅)). Microsoft did the exact opposite and you can hold this thing like a book and any of the e-readers that support it work just like you would expect a book to work. It's awesome! And also the most comfortable way to hold the duo with one hand when it's opened up. All you ever hear about with the Duo is productivity, but it's actually really really good at gaming. I've never had any games slow down or have problems. Even better, if you have Xbox Gamepass that's a section of games that work specifically with the Duo. You get a controller setup on one screen and the actual game on the other. Not all games support it and some are a little tough to play on a touch screen but it's very cool. You can pair an Xbox controller with the duo though and play everything that way. Still looking for a controller mount though. But you can use it in tent mode so you may not need one. The battery life is... Well it's better than you're afraid it'll be but not as good as you might hope for it to be. I'm a heavy heavy phone user and I charge it at night and it's about 20% or so by 4 in the afternoon. The only other thing is like to add is, I'm usually somebody who switches phones frequently. IPhone, Android, even the old Windows phones. I'd get bored, get a new one, or switch back to an old one for a while fairly often. Usually within a couple of weeks I'd at least be looking for new toys, ya know? But not with this one. I genuinely can't see myself using something else unless they come out with a Duo 2 or something. Old review: I want to make it clear that this review has nothing to do with the seller. I bought the surface duo locked to AT&T because you should be able to unlock it if it's been paid for. Every other phone I've ever bought had been this way. Apparently Microsoft dogs not provide AT&T with the unlock keys to do that on this phone. They ran out months ago. AT&T will direct you to Microsoft who has the worst customer service setup ever. No two people will tell you the same thing. Microsoft had me send in the device I had and promised to replace it with an unlocked version of the phone. What they actually did was send me a refurbished AT&T version. Which means I can no longer return the phone because Microsoft had the original. Three weeks into this mess Microsoft will not unlock my phone, will not replace my phone and certainly won't refund my phone. DO NOT BUY THIS! Unless you have AT&T and you don't plan to switch any time soon. The phone itself is great it would be a very handy device. The experience though.... If you see a great deal for the unlocked one jump on it but this one should be a hard pass. ... show more

  • 100 percent legit!
Hard Disk Size: 128 GB
Your device will show up dead and I mean that battery is well under the threshold it shuts off at. However, 30-45 minutes hooked to the included charger will wake it up. My device shows no side effects from sitting so long unused before sale and overall I'm satisfied with the use I get from such a small battery. This phone is hilariously good for having 4 year old specs. Signal strength is average, call quality is average, the speeds I get on AT&T are fantastic and it's refreshing not to look at full bars of 5G while your phone stumbles to load simple web pages. The only real issues I have are how some apps and websites just aren't designed for this dual screen setup or this aspect ratio. Sometimes an app or site will lag or stall just depending on the devices orientation. Usually if I lock and unlock the device real quick it fixes things. Future support will probably be an issue. Battery life for power users on the go with poor cell signal is most likely pretty awful. I'm always connected to wifi and battery life is honestly completely fine. If I have a full day of heavy usage it'll definitely need a charge but so did my One Plus 10 Pro 5G and it had a huge battery with excellent battery life. For $269 I'd buy this again and again but unfortunately time will eventually catch up to these and the batteries won't be worth the cost to replace them. Now I'm searching for the Duo 2 unused at a reasonable price. ... show more

  • Love the DUO - I would buy it again in a second, but buy unlocked, ATT only has ONE sim...
Hard Disk Size: 256 GB
Let me start with this: Most who review the Microsoft DUO and DUO2 are missing the whole point of the device. Is it a phone? Sure... it can be... Is it a tablet? Well, sort of... Is for consuming media? It can... but... where it shines is as an addition to your productivity suite of tools and software. Total integration. I have a Samsung S22+, my wife has a S22Ultra, and I was able to get a Samsung fold3 after an insane price match and trade in. What I can say now after using all 3 Samsung flagship phones, and a Microsoft DUO. Of all three, I prefer using the Microsoft DUO BUT the fold3 is my favorite to haul around with me. The Ultra and the + are both excellent, but when the fold 3 is folded, it feels like a phone should. It works great as a phone, and for many tasks, the open large screen is great - especially with a fold pen... so WHY a duo? Because it kicks butt as a 2 screen mini 'pc'. I used it with 4g and that was nice, but because it only has (ATT!!!) ONE sim slot, I dropped it to internet only for now and use the fold 3 as a tether 5g if needed. I would have put a data/phone plan on an esim and moved the physical sim between phones alas, ONE sim - get an unlocked DUO or DUO2. Back to why the DUO is great: It isn't the processor, the camera, the memory, the screen density, any of that... in fact many complain it is below what a flagship should have... I disagree. It has 2 screens. Each has a battery so it lasts surprisingly long for what it is. It works with just about all of the Microsoft surface pens - I have used a cheap knock off, a surface 3 pen (I believe, at least that was what I was using with my surface 3 at one point), a surface pro pen, and a pen that came with a bundle I bought with my surface 7+ w/lte. Here is where the surface pro shines. Everyone uses teams (I hate teams, but have no choice... hey, we all have been brought into the ugly world of teams. There is no escape.) and your company *probably* uses Outlook. The Duo was made for this... you can launch applications in pairs and they will open on different screens. You can drag and drop between them (as long as they have been optimized and written to do so - it works with Office apps, such as Outlook, Word, Excel, OneNote, etc... did I mention how awesome this is?). You can have outlook open, with your inbox on the left screen, and highlighted message will be displayed on the right screen. As you scroll up and down the left, the right will change to that message. Scroll through the message, tap on dates, add directly to OneNote, or your calendar, reply, etc... Can you do this on the Fold3? Sort of, but having 2 screens somehow your (or at least my) brain is better able to manage compared to one screen with split windows. I have tried. Try one large screen at home, versus 2 monitors - 2 monitors just works. I know that the second monitor has Excel open... or word, or whatever. I focus on one monitor at a time, less distraction. That is how the Duo works. I would not want a single large screen - leave that for Samsung and people who want to watch movies or ticktock... I love the separate screens. I only wish it were a tri fold, where a 'front' screen could fold out and the back fold out to give 3. That would just be... well... a dream. I digress. Anyway, Have a web browser open on one screen with a web portal, copy files from your duo to the portal, navigate folders, write documents, get signatures, whatever... you have 2 screens (and just like the FOLD you can split them further, but why?) Have a Zoom call, while you have the powerpoint open on screen2... or whiteboard... or you get the idea. The Duo isn't your phone. It isn't your tablet. It isn't your laptop. It is a productivity enhancer. Oh yeah, I forgot one of the best features. How many of us love to READ books? Isn't there something about holding a book open? You don't get that with a kindle. Try reading a book on the DUO. Absolutely amazing experience. Oh, hey Microsoft!!! or AMAZON, send me a DUO2 and I will gladly do a review! Yeah, I know that isn't going to happen. For the record, I bought my duo and samsung phones myself, along with my Surface(s). Hopefully this will help someone. ... show more
