Top Amazon Reviews

  • I will never go back to using a laptop.
This product arrived in a box directly from Amazon and included the charging cable and surface pen as needed. Booted into a brand new installation of Windows, quick and painless setup that I've come to expect from Windows, and a perfectly good, as-new product. No scratches or dents, no problems. Having never used a tablet "book" before, I had a few concerns. For example -- would the hinge be flimsy? (It's not.) Would I have trouble detaching or re-attaching the tablet? (I don't.) And, most of all, after reading the reviews -- will the battery life suck? (In fact, the dual battery system on this thing lasts seven or more hours unplugged, compared to my old laptop which lasted about 4. I'm blown away.) I will never go back to using a laptop. Even if this is not top of the line, it's an amazing purchase, and more than does all I need. It does "only" have 8GB of ram, so when I have chrome downloading something, playing a video, plus a game or two open, I notice some lag. Not enough to really hurt. This product won't run Skyrim or Photoshop, but chances are if you're doing those things, you're not looking for a Surface Book. The pen itself I could do without. It's not super useful, but I'm glad they included it to give me the full experience. EDIT (8/24/2019): I came back here to find what kind of charger I needed since the one I have just broke sort of. It still works, I just abuse the heck out of it and I want to be safe rather than sorry. Anyway! I just read my old review (this one) and I'm laughing at myself saying this won't run photoshop or skyrim. I have photoshop, chrome, spotify, and 2 chat programs open right now. Still love this product and would buy again. :) ... show more

  • Surpassing Expectations
This is my 4th laptop this year. I was a bit worried purchasing refurbished as I got burned with a refurbished Toshiba 4K display/12GB RAM/1TB HDD at the beginning of the year having issues right of the bat. I also bought two Chrome books which were nice but I wasn't able to be as productive as needed, being used to working with the MS Office Suite and not with google docs. This laptop came timely and looked brand new out of the package. It connected to the network without a glitch, where the chromebooks had wifi connectivity issues. After going through updates, it has performed flawlessly so far, easy to configure, installed software quickly and loaded files and dbs as it should be. This laptop with 8GB performs faster than the 12GB Toshiba. The keyboard is a dream to type on, the display is crisp and not to small on the icons (an issue with the 4K display on the Toshiba, the Surface book is 3K). Having the stylus and inking ability coupled with One Note and Office Suite 2016 makes me a very happy camper. Undocking/redocking the screen is easy I have not tested yet how long the tablet portion battery lasts on its own, overall the battery has lasted 8 to 9 hours being used as a laptop. That is below what is advertised. However, this time I feel MS got it right, I am pleasantly surprised at this point and feel this is a quality product. Especially the flawless interaction between OS, hardware and apps. Therefore I am giving it 5 stars, this Surface Book surpassed my expectations, wish I would have bought this first. Having the other experiences made me appreciate the Surface Book even more I guess and even though this is a refurbished model, you would never know it. ... show more

  • Great Computer, Seller NOT Recommended: The "Refurbish" is Questionable
I highly recommend buying this computer from the manufacturer along with a warranty. I absolutely do not recommend buying it from this seller under any circumstances. TL;DR: Computer worked fine for a few months then instantly became a $879 brick. It is my opinion that the problem was caused by a shoddy "refurbish" job. Shop Sale Prices won't (and probably legally doesn't have to) do anything to fix it. I bought this in machine back in October and it worked pretty much flawlessly for the first few months except for the occasional random "latch failed to open notification" which I kept getting since I unboxed the thing. I didn't think much of it, feeling like I'd saved a bit of money on a nice piece of hardware. I used it in tablet mode and clipboard mode for some digital art things and in laptop mode for my engineering homework. It performed well and I had no complaints overall. Again, absolutely worth buying from the manufacturer. All was well until one day when it immediately turned off. The battery was a bit low so I thought maybe, *maybe* the battery abruptly died. I tried charging it. No signs of life. I tried visiting some of Microsoft's support forums and tried various power/volume button combinations to try to coax it back to life. Still nothing. Finally I emailed this seller and they advised me that I should try the same button combination as per recommended by Microsoft and that my 30 day return window had long since passed, so there was nothing they could do (tried the suggestion anyway just for the hell of it to reach a predictable nothing as the outcome). Company policy. Alright, I thought. This seems legally justified, even if unjust. Unfortunate that this is where we're at with consumer versus corporate interest, but again, not a whole lot to be done see "legally justified". All around disappointed I'd dropped more than month's worth of rent on a laptop that lasted only a few months. With nothing more to lose, I thought I'd crack the lid open and see what could've gone wrong with the thing. I'm studying engineering, and I've built several computers and repaired many laptops, so I figured It'd at least be worth a shot. I removed the tablet part using the button on the base (this was still working as it's controlled by the base itself). Did some more unsuccessful troubleshooting recommended by tech forums before opening the screen. I used a heat gun to (very carefully) remove the glass. With the screen off, I found that one of the springs that control unlocking had failed catastrophically at some point. My guess is that this was the cause of the previous "latch failed to open notification" and possibly the reason for its initial need for refurbishment. Again, just speculating here. The remains of the spring had lodged itself near the top of the computer and likely shorted something out. This would explain the instant loss of power (pictures above). I disassembled the rest of the computer, disconnected the battery, and let everything sit for a while. Sometimes this fixes minor short-induced hardware issues. After reassembly, it is still just as broken. My guess is the spring completely fried something. This sort of thing should be caught during the refurbishing process. One would assume "refurbished" means "without catastrophic hardware issues waiting to happen". ... show more
