  • Great machine so far, just wouldn't buy it from Amazon
First let me encourage everyone to CHECK THE SERIAL WITH MICROSOFT. I ordered from MoneySaving Deals here on Amazon and while everything looked brand new the tablet was actually refurbished. Now, with that said, this review is based on that unit. This unit has some issues that I haven't heard anyone else have so I'm assuming it's because it's a refurb. But it has problems restarting. It gets stuck and I have to force it to cut off and cut it back on. This only happens during updates but still scary as it could brick the device, but thankfully didn't. Most people may be concerned on whether 2GB and 64GB is enough. 2GB is indeed enough for most people. Heck I can even run photoshop cs5 on it fine. During heavy raw images it will struggle but it could get the job done if you're in a pinch. For regular web browsing, youtube, watching movies, etc. it does hiccup a bit. I personally think it's because it's a refurb because my Asus t100ta which is 3 years older ran fantastic with an older atom processor and the same 2GB of ram. (Which is why I'm giving it 4 stars for now.) The 64GB isn't a concern for me because I had a high speed 64GB sd card lying around and I use onedrive to store pretty much everything so I can have access to all my files and photos and what-nots on any device, so 64GB will be fine for anyone that uses a cloud service such as I do. The resolution on paper isn't the highest, but this thing has a high quality screen so everything is bright (WAY brighter than my much more expensive Lenovo Yoga 900) and images and fonts are very crisp. I also haven't run into any scaling issues like on my Yoga 900. Another thing with the kickstand... it's perfect! I've heard complaints of it only being 3 position.... Look, if you need more than these 3 perfect angles then I don't really know what to say. It fulfills all viewing angles for me and my wife. I'm 5'9" and she's 4'11". Standing or sitting we can both ind the perfect view for it. So don't let that discourage you. I have a replacement coming today. Hopefully that isn't refurbished too. All in all I like the machine and will keep it once I can get a brand new one and not a refurb. Hopefully that irons out any issues I had with this refurb unit. I'd say go for it! UPDATE (5/7/2016): Ohhhh kaaayyy. So, got the replacement from another seller: Shira Sales 1. ANOTHER REFURB!! Terrible sellers, and received even worse customer service from Amazon. Anyway, I ended up getting one from Best Buy. The even more comical thing is the difference in packaging. For everyone's awareness I've taken side-by-side pictures of the box I received from Amazon and the one I picked up at Best Buy. The Amazon packaging is on top while the Best Buy packaging is on the bottom. I also ended up getting the 4GB 128GB version because it was only $50 more at Best Buy. Runs a great deal smoother with no hiccups at all so far. I really think the other one ran poorly due to being refurbished at this point because it's night and day. Anyway, I like the machine even more now so I'm updating to 5-Stars, however, I do NOT recommend you buy it from Amazon, at least not a third-party seller. ... show more

  • Great for students
What can I say about a tablet that is now a little outdated that has not already been said. I find this to be the perfect companion to my home PC but not quite a laptop replacement. As a student it has made my live much easier. The One Note app allows me to take a picture of something in my textbook and make notes on it with the surface pen, or just type them with the keyboard. I can compile articles from the internet, personal notes, PDF documents, pictures and a number of things into one convenient file. Probably the best feature is being able to record a lecture in One note type notes out, and draw a diagram with the surface pen at the same time in the same document. I am however dissapointed that Microsoft decided to sell the Surface tablets as standalone and make you purchase an extra $200 worth of pen and keyboard to make this tablet functional, the pen and keyboard are the only reason why I would buy a surface over a netbook if you are not willing to buy those save your money and get a netbook. The 64 gig model is a bit on the small side with memory, but an SD card can fix that pretty easily. I have not had any trouble with the small 2 gigs of ram that come with this model for my usage, but a power user who wants to play games and have multiple windows and desktops open at once will definitely want the PRO model. For average everyday note-taking watching YouTube videos and researching on the web this cheaper model will work fine. ... show more

  • Be prepared to re-install Windows 10 from the ground up.
I read the reviews before I purchased this item. I am a retired techie, so I wasn't intimidated by the issues experienced by some buyers, especially since detailed recovery procedures were documented by previous purchasers. Like many others, I encountered a bad install of Windows 10. As soon as I powered my unit up, I was thrilled to see Windows 10 boot up, apparently normally. Very shortly, however, it dropped to the BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) and informed me a restart was required. It quickly became apparent that what I had was essentially a 'Brick'. Following the advice of others, I went to the Microsoft website, located and downloaded a complete Windows 10 Surface 3 image (you'll need your device's serial number for this) and installed it on a flash drive. I then booted the Surface into it's console screen (hold down the power button and volume +) and reinstalled the OS from the flash drive. Once I had a working instance of Windows 10, I immediately ran the Update utility to bring the Operating System up to the current level, and I haven't had any issues since. It's a very inexpensive way to get your hands on a great little tablet, but it's not for the faint of heart. I purposely waited a month or two before writing this review to make sure I didn't encounter any other issues. I use this thing every day, and it runs as well or better than my laptop. It's gradually replacing my Kindle, augmenting my laptop, and serves as a great note-taker at meetings. So, in a nutshell... yes, it worked. No, it was not hassle free. Be prepared to do a lot of work to get it up and running. To me, however, it was worth the time and effort put in to end up with a high quality tablet. PS: Do yourself a favour and install as large a micro SD card as you can get your hands on. 4 Gigs of memory does not leave a lot left over once Window 10 is installed. ... show more
