Description

Five years after losing a newborn, Sue could not shake the sudden and continual onsets of nausea and brain fog. Barely functioning, she searched relentlessly for a diagnosis, and found her way to holistic medicine. Marriage and finances teetered while she struggled to work and care for a young son. But coping wasn’t enough, and Sue landed in the black recliner. Learning to relax led to an exploration of beliefs from a buried childhood in Asia. The healing that ensued was an extraordinary journey that restored and awakened her body and spirit. Read more

There are memoirs, and then there are memoirs. Sue’s honest and reflective memoir keeps true to her message of persistence via love and intelligence. In learning to adapt and unlearn truisms taken for granted, Sue worked hard to break free of constructs that created more trouble than they were worth. With so many challenges in life, it is all the more meaningful that she was so openly raw about some of the most difficult periods in her life. She shares several near-cascading, life-altering moments that can arise in anyone’s life – it is to everyone’s benefit to learn from her experiences. Her musings and perspective is as entertaining as it is humorous - her husband, friends, and family are gems of support and consistency. What is most admirable about Sue, is her not recognizing how great she really is, while at the same time, always recognizing how lucky she is to have such devoted and loving people by her side. Sue Wang's memoir is an intense and moving journey of healing and growing one's true spirit. - Adrian Mendoza, author of The Kaleidoscope Series ... show more

  • Gripping Read
This is a courageous, fascinating, and well written tale of facing and staring down our demons. Sue's first person account gives us a painstaking view of her earliest experiences with her family of origin in Taiwan, continuing to the family she created in MA. We learn about Sue's emotional abuse in a culture where children had little voice and the ensuing years of understanding and treating her somatized trauma. It is, at heart, her fight for mental, physical, and spiritual health. This is also everyone's story. The themes of pain, struggle and the continuing work to embrace life in all its contradictions will be familiar to the reader no matter what their background and experiences. A quick and engrossing read, Messages from the Black Recliner, is written in an easy, straightforward style about a difficult and circuitous path to healing our hearts and bodies, and thriving joyfully in the larger world. ... show more

In this memoir we experience the trials that the writer faced in seeking a solution to a seemingly intractable illness. Where some in society would try to dismiss it, Sue, grasps entirely the reality of it and devotes herself to finding the cause. Her journey takes us into the deeper waters of hypnotherapy where she finds crucial insights that travel to the soul level in her process of healing and recovery. It is a very worthwhile and interesting read. Thank you Sue, for sharing this most personal story. ... show more

"Message" is a wonderful read. Sue's journey in dealing with newly-diagnosed multiple chemical sensitivity takes her to unexpected places. Anyone who has sought non-traditional medical treatment can relate to these experiences. My favorite parts of the book are Sue's insights from her childhood in Taiwan, which are interwoven throughout this journey, giving her tremendous insight and ultimately, her path to healing. I cried on two occasions while reading this book, which has never happened to me before! ... show more

  • Heartwrenching and heartwarming
The beginning of the story grabs your attention. I could relate to Sue's childhood. Sue endured a lot at a young age. But her determination as an adult is truly triumphant.
