  • A Lot of Food for Thought
After reading the Four Agreements, I was pretty excited to read The Fifth Agreement. I was a little disappointed, though, because a lot of the content rehashed the first four agreements, and not very much of the book was dedicated to the fifth agreement. However, it was helpful to review the first four agreements and see how the fifth agreement fit into the picture. The book is split into two parts: 1. The Power of Symbols 2. The Power of Doubt The five agreements are: 1. Be impeccable with your word. 2. Don't take anything personally. 3. Don't make assumptions. 4. Always do your best. 5. Be skeptical but learn to listen. The authors talk about how everything we know is expressed in our understanding of the meaning of symbols. This meaning does not necessarily represent what is true about something but rather what we believe about something. The whole process of self-mastery starts with self-awareness. You can't fix something that you aren't aware of or don't realize could be a problem. To truly master ourselves, we need to realize that we may believe in things that are not true. We need to question everything and try to get to the true meaning of things. Some quotes I've highlighted in the book that I want to spend more time thinking about include: • "You sacrificed your personal freedom to live according to somebody else's point of view." • "The result of practicing the fifth agreement is the complete acceptance of yourself just the way you are, and the complete acceptance of everybody else just the way they are." • "…every word in our mind has a meaning, but not because it's real, not because it's truth. It's just an agreement with ourselves and with everybody else who learns the same symbology." • "The truth is that all of our knowledge, 100 percent of it, is nothing more than symbolism or words that we invent for the need to understand and express what we perceive." • "The truth leads to self-mastery, to a life that's very easy; our distortion of the truth often leads to needless conflict and human suffering. Awareness makes all the difference." • "The mastery of the human mind requires complete control of the attention—the way we interpret and react to information we perceive from inside us and outside of us." • "Be skeptical is masterful because it uses the power of doubt to discern the truth." • "Use the power of doubt to challenge every message that you deliver to yourself." I'm nowhere near the point of mastering any of the five agreements, but having an awareness of them is helping me to be more conscientious of my thoughts and is helping me question some of my own beliefs and my self-doubt. I hope to continue working on these agreements, growing as a person, and improving my life by applying them. ... show more

  • Verbose, waste of time and money (and I loved the 4 agreements)
I was excited about buying the 5th agreement. What a disappointment! It's a bigger book than the 4 agreements, yet it's not providing any real insight. The main message could be explained in a few pages. Lots of repetitions, not practical, and not flowing at all. I had to force myself to finish it (who knows... maybe I was going to find a nugget of wisdom in the last pages... nope). While reading it I kept feeling it had been written just to tap into the financial success of the first book. ... show more

  • buy it, *read a little, ponder, repeat from *
Like so many others, I got a lot of valuable guidance from The Four Agreements. But it all comes home in this book by don Jose Ruiz. This is the goal. This is the understanding of the goal. This is the understanding of the barriers to the goal. If this book doesn't inspire and give you the understanding to get your shovel and clear the pile of debris hiding your real, shining and pure identity, I've no idea what would! If you never read The Four Agreements, they are discussed, each in its own chapter in The Fifth Agreement - and with a depth and clarity that goes beyond the author's fathers original work that so many of us treasure. If you are buying just one book on personal/spiritual development, this is the book to get. ... show more

  • Very enlightening
This book not only added a fifth agreement but expanded greatly on the first four. The fifth agreement is something I practiced for many years but kept judging myself as being weak because of it. I'm excited to put it back into practice but with more skepticism and more kindness toward myself. I'm very grateful for this book. ... show more

  • I like it!
I liked it. It really takes the four agreements to the next level. They do go over the first four agreements. I would almost recommend just starting with this book, but the book for the original four reads rather quickly. This has really helped me understand that life it what you make it. You can't control everything, but you can control how you react to it. Never stop learning and growing. ... show more

  • Life altering - in the best way possible!
This book is a great follow up read to The Four Agreements. It kind of goes over the 4 agreements to help solidify those ideas and then bam, it hits you with the profound 5th agreement. Everything is wonderful about this book - the way it’s written, the ease in which the author explains things, the beautiful pictures the words paint and the sacred feeling of peace it brings while reading it. I highly recommend purchasing this book and reading it over and over when you need a reminder of why you are here. Get extra copies and gift this book to the people you love and let it enlighten and awaken them also! Let’s change the world! Not let’s try, let’s do it! I believe we can after reading this book. ... show more

  • The Fifth Agreement
Reading this book put a finishing touch into appreciating and understanding better the message of The First Four Agreements. It is a beautiful Practical Guide to Living. Some months ago I read The Four Agreements and listened also to it read by Peter Cayote's excellent rendition of it. The CD, in my opinion, brings the message of the book to life. Being impeccable with one's word, not making assumptions, not taking things personally and doing the best one can (the four agreements) become clearer as one works to understand the Fifth Agreement of having an open mind ( being positive in your critical observations) combined with the art of listening to others. I love the message of this book and it is one that I will reread since it has a depth of information that I couldn't master in one reading. ... show more

  • A Return to Truth
If I had not met Don Jose Ruiz himself to hear what he had to say, I would have been skeptical about the Agreements. It's easy for authors to write what they research rather than what they stand for. Don Jose had been a series of different kinds of fire for me: a brilliant light, a warming flame, a blast of renewal, a force for rekindling. I would encourage readers not just to look at the words but immerse themselves into the mediation of their meanings. It will elevate your thinking. ... show more
