This is a great module. It easily connected to the 10pin on my engine. It did take a little while to connect to my devices - but that's because I was trying to use the old Mercury app and not the new one like the instructions said. It was user error. Easy installation and works as expected. If I had to offer any criticism, the iOS app itself took a solid 2-3 minutes to setup upon first installation. Otherwise, it was smooth sailing. I installed it such that the module sits on the bow-facing side of the motor and I have no issues with Bluetooth signal at the helm on my Bayliner. Of note, you'll want to make sure you've powered down your vessel (hit the battery kill switch to be sure!) or it can throw some initial erroneous codes on you. Also do note that if it pops up with a battery of service minders (oil, impeller, belt, etc.) - these are generic interval / minders that may or may not apply based on your actual service record pre-installation. ... show more

The site combines reviews for VesselView and SmartCraft Connect. Most of the 5-star reviews are for VesselView. I should have paid closer attention. SmartCraft Connect is supposed to be a “new and improved” version, but it’s anything but. The install is very simple and it connected to Bluetooth on the second try. That’s where the positives ended. There is a new update that is supposed to fix all the issues mentioned in other reviews and finally add new gauges like VeselView had. Well, the unit won’t update. First of all, it has to be 3-5 feet from a WiFi hotspot to get good signal. I have a mobile hotspot, so that was resolved. The update process stops at Step2 and loses connection. I gave up after 4 attempts and returning the unit. The hardware seems good and the install is straight forward. However, the software and the app are horrible and feel half baked. I hope they improve this in the future, because it’s a great idea. ... show more

Style: Under Cowl 1 Engine
The SmartCraft is easy to install. Watch a YouTube video on the installation; it is much easier to follow than the installation instructions on the Mercury website. The Mercury Marine App. takes some time to set up. It runs an update, which slows things down a bit, but once it's done, the setup is smooth and easy. The app only connects when the motor is on, so on the water, when you stop the motor to fish or swim, the app disconnects. You have to restart the app every time you start the motor for everything to function properly. I think that the app could use a little work, as it is slow to load, but overall, it provides you with solid information and does what it says it will do. Highly recommend. ... show more

Installed SmartCraft on a Boston Whaler Montauk and works great. Dont like being on the water without major systems indicators. The boat has alarms but, when an alarm goes off it’s too late. With SmartCraft I can monitor changes I the operating environment. I would say it’s a bit pricey but considering what it’s does the alternatives can ruin your day ... show more

    • If you have connection issues, check if you installed the under cowl or helm version...It matters!

I'm writing this review in case others find the device will not connect to engine. I gave it 3 stars for now until I am actually able to review the product as it did not work. I ordered the under cowl version but what I received was the under helm version; I did not realize this until after connecting the device to the CAN harness and powering up. As others have stated, I received errors in the app, something regarding inability to connect to the engine. The reason for the error is simple, no CAN terminator. The 10-pin connector you remove from the harness before plugging in the SmartCraft device is the so-called CAN terminator. This is a required element in the communication network; there are actually two, one at each end of the harness. To geek out a bit, in its simplest form, the terminator is a 120Ω resistor across the CAN high and CAN low signal lines. The under cowl version includes a built-in terminator that replaces the one living in the cap you just removed from the connector. The under helm device does not have a terminator as it plugs into the harness somewhere in between the two ends of the CAN harness where terminators reside. For those with connection issues, check that you have the correct version (cowl vs helm) as that could be your root cause. I was hesitant in purchasing this item because of the reviews. The last thing I needed was one more headache that I paid for on my boat. That having been said the product and installation were amazing. It took longer to remove the cowl and find a spot to put it down safely than it did to successfully install the smartcraft connect. I wish this had come standard on the boat but I am thrilled to have it now. ... show more

Works great. I ordered the under cowl model, the cable connection was quick and easy. At the time my wifi was sketchy but it connected really fast. Had no issues keeping connection. The app tells me everything im looking for. The app loads rather slow, but other then that I have no complaints
