I installed this on my Mercruiser 4.5L 250, mostly to keep track of maintenance and have access to any check engine codes that might come up in the future. The module plugs right in and connects quickly to my phone using the app. The app is pretty well done and has some interesting and useful features, giving access to real-time telemetry and performance stats.

For those with outboards, separate gas tanks with no sending unit and no gauges, this is a necessity - even if you have gauges. You need to know your hours for maintenance alone, without that, you might as well be throwing money down the damn drain with either, a) unnecessary maintenance/oil changes, b)not doing maintenance when you're supposed to - leading to costly damage. The other savings you get is from the performance reporting - it will tell you your gallons per hour at which RPM and what MPH on a chart. You are empowered to see what the sweet spot is for mileage and speed. Not to mention now you know what to expect fuel wise, not getting stranded having to pay for a boat tow - or sissy footing back to the dock "to be on the safe side" - nah bro, get your time and moneys worth. There's a lot of other things this does for you to, but does that even matter with what I've just said? Buy it now!

I have a cheap pontoon boat with minimal analog gauges, so I installed this Smartcraft Bluetooth adapter on the engine hoping to get more engine stats. I am very pleased with this device and the related Android app so far. The unit was easy to attach to the wiring harness and secure under the engine cowl. I have had no problems with the Bluetooth connection to my phone at the helm, which is about 10 feet from the engine. I like knowing my precise engine RPM, and it was reassuring to see that my boat's analog tachometer is reasonably accurate. My boat was not equipped with a speedometer, so it is nice that the app reports speed using the phone's GPS. My boat was also not equipped with an engine hour meter, and I had no idea how many hours were on the engine because I bought the boat used. This little device solved that problem for me and the app conveniently tracks service needs based on engine hours. My favorite feature of this device and its software is that it estimates fuel consumption and calculates gallons per hour, miles per gallon, and distance/time to empty based on how many gallons you tell it you've added to the tank. The only disappointment that I've had with this device and its app is that it does not report engine oil pressure or cooling water temp. However, that may be a limitation of my engine's instrumentation, or it could be that I have just not found it in the app yet! I do recommend adding a USB charging port to your boat for your phone if you don't already have one. Running the app continuously for several hours takes a toll on my phone's battery.

I was so excited to get this plug and play type device. It's really nice that it stores all of your maintenance schedules and any faults. Easy to install, instructions are a little confusing but there's a couple really quick and easy videos to follow on YouTube. Took me about 5 minutes to plug in and another 10 to figure out where to mount.

Install isn’t necessarily difficult- just make sure you set up the connector properly with the resistor in line. The trickier part is placing the unit somewhere under the engine cover, away from places that are too hot or restrict cable movements, etc. Being able to see the data real time is awesome for finding the right cruise speed for best fuel consumption. Performance report shows you gph across a multitude of rpm/speed ranges. You can easily see where your boat is most efficient. Once you enter fuel data (size of tank at fill up), it also helps you accurately monitor how much fuel you have used. I know my boat’s fuel gauge is way off now. My only complaint is that it constantly disconnects from my phone/the app while underway. It seems to come right back, but I’m not sure why it’s doing this. My phone is less than 10ft from the unit so distance should t be a concern. Everything is also up to date. But I like it enough to keep using it regardless. Knowing when regular maintenance is due is also I nice feature.

Simple Installation. Easy download of Application to phone. Physical install on my 75 HP Mercury outboard was easy. Install on the boat was 30 mins tops. Easy bluetooth connection to my phone. The instructions on how to use this device effectively were lacking but there are plenty of tutorials on You Tube to allow you to set it up to meet your needs. Great diagnostic tool and will capture engine fault codes as well. Verified that my speedo is correct and the RPMs of the motor match those on my dials. Outstanding tool and I hightly recommend it.
