  • Decent little horn.
Color: Nickel Plated-
Somewhere in it’s evolution, this horn changed. The one I received isn’t the same model displayed in the pictures of this listing. Or of others who submitted pictures of their horn. (See the picture of mine. Can you spot the differences compared to others and the stock photos?) So my review is based on the Mendini pocket trumpet I received. What can I say? It makes trumpet sounds and stays in tune throughout it’s range. The valves are decent. I haven’t had any issues with slow or sticky values after 3 months of almost daily use. But I do oil my valves before I use it. I also try to use good form and only push up and down as straight as possible. And cleaned my horn before the first time using it. Make sure you clean the insides thoroughly and oil the valves before the first use or pressing on the valves. I found small metal particles on the valves, inside the valve casing, and through out the piping of the horn. Besides the metal flakes found inside. My only complaint is the tuning slide needs to be out further than I would like to be in tune. sometimes I bump my chin on the tuning slide. Also the case won’t close when the tuning slide is this out. Over all I think it’s a decent little horn if you clean it good first and are gentle with the valves. ... show more

  • Great trumpet (given the price and the novelty)
Color: Nickel Plated-
Obviously, this is not going to beat a Bach Strad or anything. But that’s not really what you bought it for, is it. First, the negatives: 1. The valves are a bit scratchy, but totally usable with oil. 2. The 3rd valve slide is a bit hard to adjust on the fly. 3. The tuning can be a bit suspect in the upper registers. 4. Mutes fit, although not always securely. Note that a clip on bucket mute (like the H&B or Soulo brand) will not fit on this. The pros: 1. It’s very well-blowing. I feel like I can play consistently higher on this. 2. It’s very good to mess around on. I can just pull this out and have a good time. 3. It’s only $150 (with the discount, it was $120). I recommend this to anyone who wants a cheap pocket trumpet or even a cheap regular trumpet. The only reason why I would not recommend this specific trumpet is if you like to use a lot of mutes very often (especially bucket mutes) or if you are looking for a brighter sound. I’ll briefly touch on the included extras: The mouthpiece is good (a 7C), though most people may want to buy another (I myself use a 1.5C megatone copy). The valve oil is usable, though better options are out there. The tuner/metronome is passable, it tunes slightly flat by about 1 cent, but unfortunately the speaker doesn’t work on my model. However, a good trumpet and decent mouthpiece would normally be wayyy more than 150, so the fact that any of these were included at all is surprising. ... show more

  • So you bought a $100 trumpet...
Give or take a few bucks. I picked mine up almost 2 years ago. I won't say I play it often. I've been playing trumpet on and off for over 20 years. My normal horns are a '92 Bach Strat 25 for classical and a '56 Olds Super for jazz. Why'd I buy this? Because it was $120 (when I bought it). TOTALLY worth it. Okay, the bad, first. 1. Feels like it's made out of tinfoil. 2. The stock valve action is 'adequate'. Lap them, or give them a few slides through some 1000 grit sandpaper, then oil them up. Swap in some better springs, and you get much better response. 3. Slide action is decent. I had to take the 1000 grit to the 3rd valve slide, though, to get it more agile. A few twists in the 1000 grit, oil and grease, and it's great. 4. The black lacquer is uneven at the welds and starts flaking off from protrusions almost immediately. 5. Spit valve springs are cheap, and are just mashed against the tubing with no reinforcement. Get yourself some real springs off Ebay, then cushion them with some rubber or plastic. The rubber spit valve pads seem fine. Now the good! 1. With a few mods, you have a horn with decent mechanical action. 2. Comes with the typical 'beginner' mouthpiece, Bach-style 7c, but do yourself a favor and get a 3c. 3. It sounds DECENT. Yes, it actually does. 4. It's tiny and fun. Look at it. IT'S SO ADORABLE! And the case it comes in is pretty good. Nice and padded, but still only about the size of a shoebox. Totally portable. 5. It was $120. Take it to the desert and play in a sandstorm. Dive in a pool and bubble out some Buble under the water. Stick it out the window on the highway doing 105 and see if you can outrun Flight of the Bumblebee. Strip the lacquer off and spray paint it pink with gold glitter sparkles. Who cares! 6. Prop it upright and use it as a kitschy flower pot, a statement to the elasticity of today's high-precision, off-shore brass manufacturing! A lone moth orchid would look especially shway with the flaking, black lacquer. I love this horn. It's fun. I stick my custom mouthpiece in this thing and wail. The bell is so close to your face you hear nothing but sound, and it's not a bad one. The slotting is a little bit weird at first, but it's not impossible with a little practice. I love taking this horn with me wherever I go; you never know when you might come up on a lonely drummer in need of a horn player! ... show more

  • Don't expect too much, but you'll like it.
Color: Nickel Plated-
Sound/playability: Surprisingly good! The tone is more like a cornet to me, but with the first valve slide out about 1/4" and the 3rd valve slide out about 3/8", it plays well in tune. Expect to have to lap the valves (no big deal with some Flitz) and possibly change the springs (I have some on order). Quality/Workmanship: Not great. The finish on mine (nickel) was flaking off the bottom of the bell when it was straight out of the box. It's replacement arrived 3 days later-- and the bell was bent, right out of the box! After talking with Amazon, I decided to just keep the first one since it played OK and send the bent one back-- and they refunded me part of the purchase price of the first one. Overall: If the intended purpose is to have a travel horn to stay in practice, this little horn fits the bill just fine--for the money. I would not recommend this as a student horn as some have mentioned- there are lower priced student trumpets that are much better suited for that. It's not easy to hold, but it's fun to play. Standard trumpet mouthpieces I have tried in it (Bach and Schilke) fit the leadpipe with no problems. ... show more
