    • A bit tricky to install for the DIY crowd

Package arrived last night, installed today in about one hour. My model is the 826 CHSL (Benton) in White (000). The slow close hinges work great. The toilet that the seat is installed on is a Glacier Bay from Home Depot. Bowl is round! Folks--- do your measurements if you do not fully understand the differences between an elongated bowl or a round bowl.... As other reviewers have noted, and the install video explains fully, the tightening of the seat/lid assembly to the toilet bowl is done from the bottom side. This presents some logistical issues depending on the amount of room you have to gain clear access to the bolts. Bemis/Mayfair explains that a 1/2" socket or wrench will work. Also, 13mm is put in parentheses. I highly recommend the 13mm, which technically is just a bit larger, Google says .511811024 inches while 1/2" would of course be only .50 Once I inserted the full/all thread bolts, so to speak (they have no head at either end), the seat/lid was somewhere between full closed and open. It was necessary to hold the seat/lid assembly at an angle to have it be true vertical within the mounting holes of the toilet bowl. Not a big deal, but a helper set of hands may be useful. I needed the straight up and down to properly thread the special nuts that Bemis supplies. An inner nut with attached washer break free from one another as you thread them onto the 'all thread' bolt. You'll see how it all comes together, nice and tight once you progress forward. I would recommend a 13mm ratcheting wrench for the long attaching nut(s). Spacing for me below the lip of the bowl was tight. It was somewhat difficult to get a 13mm 'deep' socket to line up vertically. Do as much hand tightening as possible before any tools. Kudos to Bemis/Mayfair for their double headed nut design, in which the exterior end breaks off when you have reached proper torque on the long nut assembly. This pulls the hinge down from the top nice and flush with the bowl mounting surface, and seats that inner washer and nut into the bowl's mounting hole. I then tightened perhaps 1/10th of a turn more with the longer/taller interior nut once the short/exterior one had snapped off-as designed. The 1/2" deep socket would indeed fit-but it is quite tight and dealing with porcelain you want to avoid a lot of potential excess stress or movement with your tools down there. Baby strokes with any wrench or socket, you sure would not want to chip or break anything of the toilet itself! All in all it seems to be a quality made unit. Yes, it does take perhaps 15 seconds for the entire seat and lid to reach full closure. Not a big deal to me. I like that it is real wood, and sturdy for those times I have to climb up on it (150lb male) to reach a cabinet's upper shelving. Will update once it passes the test of time.... ... show more

I'm a woman with little experience in installing household appliances, and I installed this with ease. Managed to even fit a Luxe bidet attachment right underneath, the screws are long enough and tightening it isn't difficult at all. It's slow closing which is great.

My wife wasn't entirely pleased with the appearance. There's not much retro in our house, and the metal hinges look a little retro. I like the look, and I'm happy that the hinges are not plastic. Plastic hinges seem weak to me, a little spongey when you shift left or right. Maybe there are strong plastics on more expensive seats and I have always bought the cheap ones in the past. This seat is solid, easy to install, and it sits perfectly straight on the bowl, does not wobble. I like that the fasteners are metal and not plastic. Way better than the seat I had on before. Had it for about 6 months now and expect it to last for a long time.

For starters, this seat was extremely easy to install. Who knew what a difference a toilet seat could make? The slow close feature is so awesome, I don't see how I ever went without it. My old seat was just skinny enough that sometimes my man parts would touch the water! YUCK 🤮 With this seat I no longer have that problem!! Thank goodness. 😊 I absolutely love this toilet seat. Definitely make sure to have the toilet seat centered before tightening it down. It was easy to install and only needed to adjust it once to get it centered on the bowl but it’s still not perfectly centered. I tried adjusting it a couple times and got it close enough. One of the plastic washers arrived with a small piece broken off but it wasn’t detrimental to installing it. The quiet closing feature will take some getting used to. I like it! ... show more

The Benton style seat from Mayfair (Bemis) looks great on the Kohler toilet. The top lid is a tad smaller in dimension than the seat portion and matches the slanting inward upper rim of the bowl to give an "original equipment" look to the whole unit. And the all metal chrome plated hinges seem much more solid than the plastic ones. Soft close of both covers is perfectly adjusted for a quiet close. ... show more
