The instant 1 New York Times bestseller! A Human hybrid and an Alpha Were claw against the bonds of fate in the highly anticipated companion novel to the New York Times bestselling Bride. Serena Paris is orphaned, pack-less, and one of a kind. Coming forward as the first Human-Were hybrid was supposed to heal a centuries-long rift between species. Instead, it made her a target, prey to the ruthless political machinations between Weres, Vampyres, and Humans. With her enemies closing in on her, she has only one option left—if he’ll have her. As Alpha of the Northwest pack, Koen Alexander commands obedience. His authority is so absolute, only a fool would threaten his mate. It doesn’t matter if Serena doesn’t reciprocate his feelings, nothing will stop him from keeping her safe. But power-hungry Vampyres and Weres are not the only threats chasing Serena. Sooner or later, her past is bound to catch up with her—and Koen might be the only thing standing between her and total annihilation… Read more

  • Ali Hazelwood does Paranormal Romance so well!
Format: Kindle
I have finally gotten to Mate once my brain decided I’d be sitting down and doing my re-read of Bride and reading Mate this weekend no questions asked. I am very glad i decided to do a Bride re-read, and while I feel like Mate is definitely a standalone, it’s is made much stronger by being read right after Bride. Serena has just found out she is a hybrid, Werewolf and Human, and is sent to live in Koen’s territory to protect herself and Ana, but Serena is also keeping some massive secrets from everyone and i was very shocked about all of them, i did not see them coming at all. Koen knows Serena is his mate, but due to his packs rules, his vow of celibacy makes it impossible for him to accept the mating bond, but also because Serena isn’t showing any signs of having the mating bond with Koen. Koen’s one-liners kill me almost as well as Misery’s and I love how Ali Hazelwood writes her characters. She has such a way with dark and dry humor that just really confirms how much I love her writing. I also loved the political plot lines of this book, between the women’s health issues, the cult, and the science versus religion, I think it was really well done where it’s not obvious and in your face but also properly timed and well-written into the plot lines. Also the suspense, the secrets, the connections that the cult plot line adds to Serena and Koen’s story was a perfect way to add conflict in addition to the mating bond rejection. I hope AH continues to write paranormal romance, she is amazing at it, and I so hope we see more to come! ... show more

  • Solid Follow Up
Format: Audiobook
4.25 ⭐️’s I listened to Bride over the summer and have been waiting for Mate to come out. I always enjoy Ali Hazelwood’s books and I found Mate entertaining and funny with likable characters. It’s an easy, enjoyable read that kept me hooked throughout, and I appreciated how Hazelwood balanced the plot and its serious moments with humor, found family, and of course…Ana. Picking up pretty shortly after Bride ended, we follow Serena as she navigates being the first known Human-Were hybrid, which makes her a target and lands her under the protection of Koen, the Northwest Alpha. I enjoyed the pacing as Hazelwood does an excellent job of keeping things moving without dragging. She expands on the world from Bride by introducing us to a new Were pack that’s adjacent to one we’re already familiar with. Bride had to balance introducing us to both Vampyres and Weres, so Mate really gets to explore Were pack culture and politics in a way the first book couldn’t. I enjoyed Serena and Koen’s chemistry and dynamic. There’s a lot of tension and restraint between them as they navigate having to be around each other and the complications that come with being mates and resisting that bond. They’re both keeping secrets, and watching them slowly let their guards down was satisfying. I loved that Misery, Lowe, and Ana showed up in this book without overshadowing Serena and Koen’s story. Ana is still a favorite of mine and she brings this innocent, lighthearted energy and humor that balances out the heavier moments. A lot of Serena’s choices are motivated by protecting Ana, which made me understand her character and give her some grace when she was making decisions I wanted to yell at her for. I am also a sucker for found family, and Koen’s seconds were fantastic. I loved how they naturally gravitated to Serena. Hazelwood packs more into this story than I initially expected. What starts as political tension between Vampyres, Weres, and Humans shifts as the plot develops and introduces complications I didn’t see coming. There are genuine surprises that kept me engaged, and I loved how she tied different plot threads together. Serena’s personal history connects to the larger conflict in surprising ways, and watching everything come together surprised me in some ways, was predictable in others, but I still enjoyed it all. The romance never gets lost in all of this, but the plot elevates it beyond just will they or won’t they. I enjoyed Mate and would recommend it if you’ve read Bride. My main critique is that I wish some of the Were dynamics had been explained better. I’m not super familiar with the omegaverse, and Hazelwood puts her own spin on these concepts without really breaking them down. I found myself Googling things to fully understand what was happening, which pulled me out of the story. There’s also a major plot twist that felt like a bit of a stretch in terms of how it was missed for so long. Regardless of my critiques, I actually liked Mate more than Bride because of Serena’s humor, Koen’s sarcasm, the expanded world, and the found family. It’s a solid, entertaining read with good character development and a satisfying romance. If you’re finishing the series, Mate is worth picking up. ... show more

  • Favorite Ali Hazelwood book to date
Format: Kindle
When I say Ali Hazelwood can do no wrong, I mean it with my entire chest. 🫡 One of the best things she ever did was take the leap into paranormal romance, with vampires and werewolfs, because Bride and now Mate proves that even when Ali steps away from her usual STEM-centered storytelling, she simply can’t leave science behind, and honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way. You can take the girl out of STEM, but you can’t take the STEM out of the girl. And I mean that in the absolute BEST way possible. This book is everything I wanted and more after Bride. The moment Serena and Koen met, I needed their story, and when I found out they were mates? I was feral. Add in Ali’s signature humor, clever plotting, and palpable chemistry, and you’ve got a story that’s equal parts science, spice, and supernatural perfection. From the very first several pages, I was hooked. Ali once again returns us to her rich, otherworldly universe of werewolves, vampires, and all the messy politics that keep their worlds colliding. The pacing is spot on and I felt like the romance and the plot weave together so seamlessly that I never once wanted to put it down. Serena was such a fascinating FMC. Half human, half werewolf, and fully determined to find her place in a world that’s never quite known what to do with her. She’s strong, loyal, brave, and yes, a total nuisance to Koen on the daily (which I adored). Ali balanced her fierceness with vulnerability in a way that made her feel real. Her relationships showed so much heart. She’s layered and imperfect and powerful, and I loved every second of being in her head. This man. THIS. MAN. Koen had me grinning and kicking my feet like a teenager. He’s protective, gruff, funny, and absolutely down bad for Serena, even though he fights it so much. His banter, his dry humor, his unwillingness to admit how hard he’s fallen is all so delicious. Ali Hazelwood truly has the formula for writing men who love with their entire soul. The “touch her and die” energy? 10/10. The acts of service? PERFECT. This story is peak Ali: witty, emotional, and addictive. There’s political intrigue, plot twists, and mindblowing reveals mixed with that classic Ali Hazelwood banter we all live for. It’s a slow burn, but the tension is there the entire time. You can feel every heartbeat, every glance, every moment of yearning between Serena and Koen. Their love is so deep and based on loyalty, sacrifice, and devotion wrapped in tension and vulnerability. And the spice? Let’s just say… whew, it deserves its own round of applause. 🤭🔥 The expansion of the supernatural world from Bride was phenomenal. We get deeper insight into pack politics, mating bonds, and history and yet it never feels like info dumping. The tension between species and the political maneuvering added so much depth. It was the perfect blend of high stakes and heart. Mate felt like seeing an old friend again. It gave me the same butterflies Bride did, but somehow even more intense. It’s hotter, more emotional, and somehow manages to raise the stakes while making me laugh when the time was needed for some comedic relief. This is easily my favorite Ali Hazelwood book to date. Ali Hazelwood continues to craft worlds and characters that make me fall in love with reading all over again. Please, for the love of all things supernatural and spicy, go read Mate. 🐺🧛♀️💚 ... show more
