The instant 1 New York Times bestseller! A Human hybrid and an Alpha Were claw against the bonds of fate in the highly anticipated companion novel to the New York Times bestselling Bride. Serena Paris is orphaned, pack-less, and one of a kind. Coming forward as the first Human-Were hybrid was supposed to heal a centuries-long rift between species. As Alpha of the Northwest pack, Koen Alexander commands obedience. His authority is so absolute, only a fool would threaten his mate. It doesn’t matter if Serena doesn’t reciprocate his feelings, nothing will stop him from keeping her safe. But power-hungry Vampyres and Weres are not the only threats chasing Serena. • Favorite Ali Hazelwood book to date
Format: Kindle
When I say Ali Hazelwood can do no wrong, I mean it with my entire chest. 🫡 One of the best things she ever did was take the leap into paranormal romance, with vampires and werewolfs, because Bride and now Mate proves that even when Ali steps away from her usual STEM-centered storytelling, she simply can’t leave science behind, and honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way. You can take the girl out of STEM, but you can’t take the STEM out of the girl. And I mean that in the absolute BEST way possible. This book is everything I wanted and more after Bride. The moment Serena and Koen met, I needed their story, and when I found out they were mates? I was feral. Add in Ali’s signature humor, clever plotting, and palpable chemistry, and you’ve got a story that’s equal parts science, spice, and supernatural perfection. From the very first several pages, I was hooked. Ali once again returns us to her rich, otherworldly universe of werewolves, vampires, and all the messy politics that keep their worlds colliding. The pacing is spot on and I felt like the romance and the plot weave together so seamlessly that I never once wanted to put it down. Serena was such a fascinating FMC. Half human, half werewolf, and fully determined to find her place in a world that’s never quite known what to do with her. She’s strong, loyal, brave, and yes, a total nuisance to Koen on the daily (which I adored). Ali balanced her fierceness with vulnerability in a way that made her feel real. Her relationships showed so much heart. She’s layered and imperfect and powerful, and I loved every second of being in her head. This man. THIS. MAN. Koen had me grinning and kicking my feet like a teenager. He’s protective, gruff, funny, and absolutely down bad for Serena, even though he fights it so much. His banter, his dry humor, his unwillingness to admit how hard he’s fallen is all so delicious. Ali Hazelwood truly has the formula for writing men who love with their entire soul. The “touch her and die” energy? 10/10. The acts of service? PERFECT. This story is peak Ali: witty, emotional, and addictive. There’s political intrigue, plot twists, and mindblowing reveals mixed with that classic Ali Hazelwood banter we all live for. It’s a slow burn, but the tension is there the entire time. You can feel every heartbeat, every glance, every moment of yearning between Serena and Koen. Their love is so deep and based on loyalty, sacrifice, and devotion wrapped in tension and vulnerability. And the spice? Let’s just say… whew, it deserves its own round of applause. 🤭🔥 The expansion of the supernatural world from Bride was phenomenal. We get deeper insight into pack politics, mating bonds, and history and yet it never feels like info dumping. The tension between species and the political maneuvering added so much depth. It was the perfect blend of high stakes and heart. Mate felt like seeing an old friend again. It gave me the same butterflies Bride did, but somehow even more intense. It’s hotter, more emotional, and somehow manages to raise the stakes while making me laugh when the time was needed for some comedic relief. This is easily my favorite Ali Hazelwood book to date. Ali Hazelwood continues to craft worlds and characters that make me fall in love with reading all over again. Please, for the love of all things supernatural and spicy, go read Mate. 🐺🧛♀️💚 ... show more

  • Solid Follow Up
Format: Audiobook
4.25 ⭐️’s I listened to Bride over the summer and have been waiting for Mate to come out. I always enjoy Ali Hazelwood’s books and I found Mate entertaining and funny with likable characters. It’s an easy, enjoyable read that kept me hooked throughout, and I appreciated how Hazelwood balanced the plot and its serious moments with humor, found family, and of course…Ana. Picking up pretty shortly after Bride ended, we follow Serena as she navigates being the first known Human-Were hybrid, which makes her a target and lands her under the protection of Koen, the Northwest Alpha. I enjoyed the pacing as Hazelwood does an excellent job of keeping things moving without dragging. She expands on the world from Bride by introducing us to a new Were pack that’s adjacent to one we’re already familiar with. Bride had to balance introducing us to both Vampyres and Weres, so Mate really gets to explore Were pack culture and politics in a way the first book couldn’t. I enjoyed Serena and Koen’s chemistry and dynamic. There’s a lot of tension and restraint between them as they navigate having to be around each other and the complications that come with being mates and resisting that bond. They’re both keeping secrets, and watching them slowly let their guards down was satisfying. I loved that Misery, Lowe, and Ana showed up in this book without overshadowing Serena and Koen’s story. Ana is still a favorite of mine and she brings this innocent, lighthearted energy and humor that balances out the heavier moments. A lot of Serena’s choices are motivated by protecting Ana, which made me understand her character and give her some grace when she was making decisions I wanted to yell at her for. I am also a sucker for found family, and Koen’s seconds were fantastic. I loved how they naturally gravitated to Serena. Hazelwood packs more into this story than I initially expected. What starts as political tension between Vampyres, Weres, and Humans shifts as the plot develops and introduces complications I didn’t see coming. There are genuine surprises that kept me engaged, and I loved how she tied different plot threads together. Serena’s personal history connects to the larger conflict in surprising ways, and watching everything come together surprised me in some ways, was predictable in others, but I still enjoyed it all. The romance never gets lost in all of this, but the plot elevates it beyond just will they or won’t they. I enjoyed Mate and would recommend it if you’ve read Bride. My main critique is that I wish some of the Were dynamics had been explained better. I’m not super familiar with the omegaverse, and Hazelwood puts her own spin on these concepts without really breaking them down. I found myself Googling things to fully understand what was happening, which pulled me out of the story. There’s also a major plot twist that felt like a bit of a stretch in terms of how it was missed for so long. Regardless of my critiques, I actually liked Mate more than Bride because of Serena’s humor, Koen’s sarcasm, the expanded world, and the found family. It’s a solid, entertaining read with good character development and a satisfying romance. If you’re finishing the series, Mate is worth picking up. ... show more

  • bold, high-stakes paranormal romance bold, high-stakes paranormal romance
Format: Kindle
Mate is a bold, high-stakes paranormal romance that blends science, power dynamics, and primal intensity in a way that feels completely different from Ali Hazelwood’s contemporary work—but still keeps her signature emotional sharpness. The story follows a bond that is anything but simple. The FMC is intelligent, stubborn, and constantly trying to stay in control of a situation that was never meant to be controllable, while the MMC is powerful, protective, and deeply tied to a world that operates on instincts, hierarchy, and inevitability. From the moment they’re connected, there’s a constant push-pull between logic and instinct, resistance and pull. What makes the book stand out is the tension between science and something far more primal. It’s not just romance—it’s about autonomy, power, and what it means when your body and mind are not fully in agreement. That internal conflict gives the story a heavier emotional layer beneath the romance. The chemistry is intense and consuming, built on proximity, forced connection, and an unavoidable bond that neither character fully wants but also can’t ignore. The emotional stakes stay high throughout, especially as both characters struggle with what choice really means when everything feels predetermined. Overall, Mate is a gripping, unconventional romance with strong tension, emotional conflict, and a relationship that feels as inevitable as it is complicated. ... show more

  • A really fun, quick read with plenty of humor, tension, and sweet moments
Format: Kindle
Mate by Ali Hazelwood is a fun and fast-paced paranormal romance set in the same world as Bride. The banter and tension between Serena and Koen were easily my favorite parts of the book. Koen’s protective alpha energy combined with his vow of celibacy makes the mate bond between them especially entertaining to watch unfold. Serena is a strong and compassionate main character who tries to carry everything on her own, and I loved seeing her slowly open up and trust someone else. While the romance definitely takes center stage, the story still explores pack politics and Serena’s past, which adds a nice layer to the worldbuilding. Overall, this was a really fun, quick read with plenty of humor, tension, and sweet moments between the characters. ... show more

Format: Kindle
3.5 ⭐️ (possible spoilers ahead) I enjoyed the book. Laughed at the banter and loved the friendship between Misery and h. I did think this book had way too many plot lines going on. The wrap-up on some of the plots was flimsy. I thought the spice was very mild. The smex doesn’t even happen until 81%. 😱😱 so….definitely a very slow burn. I was honestly so confused about Koen’s whole “to be alpha, he has to be celibate.” Umm. He became alpha at 15 and has been celibate for 20 years. But h meets a woman in his pack, and it’s alluded to that she has been with H before. Was that when he was 15 or younger? Eek. Personally, I just didn’t like the celibate part of the storyline. I know it was done to stretch out the slow burn AND explain why he was such an a-hole, but it just seemed so messy. The plot of h dying was interesting, but then it’s ruined when you find out she was just in HEAT 😬 This is a shifter community with shifter doctors. How do they not know about heat? I’ve read a ton of shifter books, and this may be the first time I’ve seen this. Also, the fact that she told no one, not even Misery, was just frustrating. I know lots of reviews said they didn’t like Koen, but I did. It would have been so helpful to have more of his POV instead of the little bits at the beginning of each chapter. I hate being in only one MC’s head during the whole book. The whole cult plot was predictable. I figured out early that h’s parents probably killed H’s parents, which meant he probably killed h’s parents. It caused zero issues between the MCs 🤷♀️ I wish there were a bit more of an epilogue. It ends where he marks her. And that’s it. Probably one of my favorites from the book. This is h’s POV about H. I snorted hard 😂😂😂 “His childhood dream was probably to become a hall monitor.” I think the book was enjoyable. It’s not the best shifter book I’ve ever read, but it’s interesting enough I bought a physical copy to go with my Bride copy. ... show more

  • Ali Hazelwood does Paranormal Romance so well!
Format: Kindle
I have finally gotten to Mate once my brain decided I’d be sitting down and doing my re-read of Bride and reading Mate this weekend no questions asked. I am very glad i decided to do a Bride re-read, and while I feel like Mate is definitely a standalone, it’s is made much stronger by being read right after Bride. Serena has just found out she is a hybrid, Werewolf and Human, and is sent to live in Koen’s territory to protect herself and Ana, but Serena is also keeping some massive secrets from everyone and i was very shocked about all of them, i did not see them coming at all. Koen knows Serena is his mate, but due to his packs rules, his vow of celibacy makes it impossible for him to accept the mating bond, but also because Serena isn’t showing any signs of having the mating bond with Koen. Koen’s one-liners kill me almost as well as Misery’s and I love how Ali Hazelwood writes her characters. She has such a way with dark and dry humor that just really confirms how much I love her writing. I also loved the political plot lines of this book, between the women’s health issues, the cult, and the science versus religion, I think it was really well done where it’s not obvious and in your face but also properly timed and well-written into the plot lines. Also the suspense, the secrets, the connections that the cult plot line adds to Serena and Koen’s story was a perfect way to add conflict in addition to the mating bond rejection. I hope AH continues to write paranormal romance, she is amazing at it, and I so hope we see more to come! ... show more

  • Obsessed. The MMC had me in a chokehold
Format: Paperback
I went into Mate expecting a fun read, but I did not expect to be this obsessed. The MMC? Dark, broody, and very much “touch her and you’re done” energy and I ate that up from start to finish. Ali Hazelwood knows exactly how to write tension, and this one had me locked in. The dynamic between the characters just worked. You could feel the pull, the intensity, and that quiet possessiveness that makes you keep turning pages way past when you should be asleep. I flew through this and didn’t want it to end. If you like a protective, slightly dangerous, completely devoted male lead this is it. ... show more

  • If werewolves are your thing, this is for you
Mate gave me everything I expected, an amazing werewolf book, quick witted, sassy Serena and a just as quick witted, brooding Koen. Mate keeps the loved old characters of Bride; Misery, Lowe and Ana, and we get introduced to a hell of a lot of funny, amazing characters in Mate. We get a deep dive in the lore of werewolves, their structure and pack mentality. I really like the way werewolves is portrayed in this universe. So if you liked/loved the book of Bride, this is for you. You get the quick witted, sassy characters, the funniest monologs, a supernatural world you can follow and a mystery or two. Happy reading. ... show more
