  • These locks fail regularly, but the concept is good
The premise behind these locks is perfect for my business. We have three gates that customers and contractors use to get into our facility. These locks allow us to give everyone 24-hour access while tracking who is and has been inside. The software makes it easy to turn access off or on for each customer or contractor. The ability to use an external 9-volt battery to gain access when the internal battery dies is very useful as well. We find these easy enough to learn to use. Our customers seem to grasp the instructions on how to use these pretty quickly. For these reasons we choose to use these locks. However, despite having only three gates to lock, we have purchased we over thirty of these locks in the last year. These locks fail regularly. I've included a picture of some of our failed locks. I keep a "lock Log" to keep track of how long they last and where we've deployed them (some gates are used much more than others - turns out that frequency of opening/closing is not related to how long the lock lasts). Our locks have lasted from as little as 5 days to 3 months. So even our longest lasting lock leaves a lot to be desired from a durability standpoint. I would expect to get at least a year of service, maybe even multiple years. Failures we've noticed: Lock will turn green but not "click" and open. Lock will turn green, click but not open. App will say the lock is open (even though it's locked) and not let you open it. Hasp will get stuck turned all the way away from the lock. Totally immobile hasp. We call this "Back Death." Lock will act like it has a dead battery but even using the external battery will not wake up. Locks sometimes get stuck locked. We use a cut-off wheel on a 4-inch grinder to open them. After it rains, the locks tend to act up more. Lately we spray them with wd-40 after the rain. Seems to help. Sometimes a new lock's battery will die in two weeks. Other times it will last until the lock stops working from something else. For a while we could buy these at the big box stores. When they failed we had good luck exchanging them for a new lock. The big box stores haven't had them in stock for about six months now, so we are buying online. That makes them harder to return/exchange. Plus, since we have to have a lock for our gates, and we have to be able to provide 24 hour access, we purchase locks to keep in inventory ready to be deployed when one fails. Sometimes the locks in inventory sit for 30 days or more before they are put into service. That also makes them harder to return. We still use though because we haven't found a comparable product, and the locks still pay for themselves in our business. The price has ranged from $80.00 to $150.00 depending on the source and the availability. Big box stores were the cheapest. Masterlock is truly on to a great concept here, but there needs to be some tweaking in the functionality for these locks to realize their full potential. ... show more

  • Great system but locks fail after a year
I have about 20 vault locks, a mixture of lock boxes and padlocks. We have around 100 users on the system. The system is great and works really well. The only problem is the locks fail after about a year or so. The failure rate for the padlocks is somewhere around 25% at 2 years. The rate for lock boxes is 100% failure by 2 years. Masterlock customer service has been very good and replaced every lock that failed- even those more than a year old but it does take a few weeks to get a replacement. We now keep spare locks ready for when one fails to bridge the gap until a replacement arrives from Masterlock. ... show more

  • Very nice lock. I would recommend
I purchased this lock for my driveway gate on a second home of mine. I did not want to hand out keys or fixed combinations that I could not change so this lock fit the need very well. It has plenty of room on the locking loop and is waterproof. It is bluetooth but in a funny kind of way that works but is only a tiny bit quirky. You download the app. Register your lock and give it a name. Most of the people that I would allow on my property when I am gone still have flip phones (yes really), and so the app is not meant for that type of phone or person. I give these people the series of arrows that are the combination. I looked and looked at this lock for a keypad and finally had to read the instructions. It has a circular dial that is blue as you see in the center. It has a up, down, right and left arrows around the blue center. No numbers as we are used to seeing but it actually turned out fine. The combination would typically be then, up, up, up, right, left, right, down, down and then if you have the sequence correct the blue turns to yellow, it clicks and you have a programmed number of seconds then to open the hasp. Default time would be about 5 seconds but it can be programmed to 10s or 20s. If several attempts are made to open the lock the app will text you a note telling you time of day and how many attempts where made. If the person opened it with the app on their smart phone then you will have a report telling you who opened the gate, how many times and when. That is all pretty cool. You can change the combination too so if it does get compromised, well just log on to the app as the master and change the code. All in all I do like the lock alot. Lets see how the batteries last and if i can figure out how to unlock it then! ... show more

  • Useful Lock
Works great. I gave it a 4-star because the app could be better. While it works great on my phone, I find that sharing access (like with my wife) so others can access it via the app on their phone is problematic. She is still unable to access. **** UPDATED 12/26/2017 **** Master Lock customer support responded to me after I initiated a support request on their website. They got back to me this morning with troubleshooting instructions. I was able to follow it. Apparently I had to recalibrate the lock (done this before, but did not uninstall the app from my phone) and it worked. Adding 1 star back to rating since customer support was good. It will not get a 5 star unless the app is improved. **** UPDATED 12/21/2017 **** I purchased this lock in November 2016. It has been working well, except fort the app. Anyway, I've noticed that lately I have been having to go into locker mode to manually enter the combination to unlock it. I figured it may have been the battery running low, so now that I'm off for the holidays, I decided to tinker with it. I changed the battery and fussed with it as much as I can. It looks like the Bluetooth unit is no longer working and I'm just shy past the 1 year warranty. I'm stuck with using it in locker mode. I'll see if I can get MasterLock to replace it under warranty and will provide an update if they do. ... show more
