  • You have to create a website account, so not as secure as you think...
I'm adding more information to this review because I think it's important to know, in order to use this lock, you have to create an account with Masterlock Vault. With a key or combination, the security is in your head. Now that's changed. With websites consistently getting hacked and secure information getting download, this is not something I trust very well. Currently, I keep low value items behind this lock, so I am comfortable with this lock. But it is NOT a super secure lock. I'm knocking off one star as well. I've seen many of the negative and positive reviews. And after setting it up and playing a little, I think there are issues but they may mostly have to do with the users phone. I have an android. After creating a user account and logging into the app, you add the locks code found in the packaging. I got this far and the app recognized the code. You also may need to turn on Bluetooth and some permissions. However, the instructions said "push the center button and don't Yank on the lock. " so I did (and didn't). Nothing. Well, after tinkering without success, I put them both down and went to the web site and did some reading. When I returned to the lock and my phone, it was just working. So a ten minute wait between initial set up and working. Not sure why. Also, make sure the app is running. I set up my phone to leave elocks running in the back ground. But it's still possible to accidently kill the process. It also takes about two seconds to get it to unlock when you press the button. You've got two small computers communicating over Bluetooth, it's gonna take a second. Still if there are issues, I've concluded that it prolly usually has to do with phones capabilities. Some phones are not speedy or high performance. ... show more

  • Save your money and don't buy this.
This is the first review I've written on Amazon, but after the worst 3 days with a product, I had to review it. I received this on Monday 6-19. I downloaded the associated app, registered with the app and I thought all would be well. After reviewing the instructions it was a simple press of the center button once you register the product to use the app with the lock. But for some reason it was not working. After an hour of consulting the "user guide" and master lock's support website I was still unable to unlock the lock and remove it from the packaging. Finally I decide to remove the battery and try to "jump" the lock. This is a backup option that is available. But this option would not work either. Finally I decide to try another battery that I have at home and low and behold it works. So I got the lock with a preinstalled battery that was dead. So the following morning (Tuesday 6-20) I go and purchase a brand new battery to put in the lock as I don't want to use the one around the house incase it's almost dead. I proceed to use the lock Tuesday night at Planet Fitness and all works fine. Now comes today (Wednesday 6-21), I go to the gym and unlock my lock to put on the locker. After a 2 hour session at the gym, I go in to get my bag, keys, wallet, etc. and I can not open the lock. I press the center button and get nothing. I try the primary dial code and nothing. I pull the battery out to try the jump option and nothing. So I had to go to the front desk and ask them to cut the lock off of my locker because I had no way to get home, or buy another battery. This lock killed a brand new battery in less than 48 hours. So now I am out the cost of this lock because it truly is garbage. I wish I could leave a half star rating because the only good part was for the one day I actually got it to work, it did perform exactly as it should have. ... show more

  • better than the bluetooth doorlock I bought
I bought this for my gym locker, but I didn't think about having to take the phone with me so that when I return, I can unlock it. It does have a locker mode, but if the sole purpose of purchasing this lock for a gym locker, you might as well by a less expensive lock, unless you keep your phone with you. It does work very well, better than the bluetooth doorlock I bought. It always 'sees' my phone and works flawlessly. I don't know if I got a bad lock or not. The battery is supposed to last for a year, but the one that came with mine died within 2 weeks of every day use. I bought a new battery and it barely lasted 3 days with no use. Perhaps a bad battery? So I am on my third battery now. I could have bought a regular lock for the price of 2 batteries ;0) But, I'm a geek and I love to try things like this. If this third battery dies soon, then it will go back to Amazon, but like I said, other than the battery issue, it is a cool lock and works very well. ... show more

  • Trade off’s still make this a good lock overall.
Pretty good lock. My only gripe is the app. Not as reliable as it could be. And be prepared for frustration when your iPhone updates its firmware and renders the Masterlock App unusable until Masterlock does its own update. Make a copy of your manual passcodes and store them on your preferred device in those rare instances that the Masterlock App will not work. At least you’ll be able to get the lock to open and get on with your day. Other than that, it’s made a huge difference getting in and out of my locker at work and not having to search around for lost/missing keys. Almost everyone these days has that one thing that life dictates is a must carry and that’s the cell phone. Perfect but for a few app snags every now and then. ... show more

  • Too shiny and encourages medlers
I bought this thinking just having my phone on me was enough [after setup] that the lock would just "work" ,but it give me a minus 1 star grief that each morning when I open my lock that I have to open my phone and the app to get it to open. The only other grump would be that I stick out with my lock and I know that because of the built in security system that puts the lock in defence mode if its toyed with by passerbys. I get a potentialy helpfull message saying things are happening to it and that its taking preventitive measures. I am currently waiting to see if the next version active defence measure as I keep joking to those toyers that the next one will have a tazer option to discourage messing with my lock. I think when they update the firmware to make my lock work without less steps and maybe somehow allow me to disable the lights during times I'm not intending to use to keep medling down on my lock I'd update the star rating. ... show more
