Although I've grown up around those who hide their spare keys around their home, I've never really been one to do it myself. Call me a skeptic/cautious, but leaving a key around for someone else to find is just asking for trouble. While I don't mind doing it on a temporary basis (for a day or two), long term never really sat well with me. My wife on the other hand, is a big believer in leaving a spare key somewhere. I suppose the most recent event where she was out of town and I was supposed to be home later that day (but didn't arrive until after midnight because my flight was delayed) got her worried. You see, we have 2 dogs and in that incident, they were home alone, in a crate, in the dark for over 18 hours. I've ran through various scenarios and one of the solutions would be to give our neighbor a spare key. But with that, we don't know our neighbors very well (moved in just a few months ago). Plus having to rely on them to gain access to my home for whatever reason is just one additional obstacle. What if they aren't home or on vacation when we or someone else actually needs the key? My wife suggested to just hide it under a rock or doormat, but that was just a terrible idea. If one were to hide their key for emergency purposes, you wouldn't want to put it in a place that's obvious, but not so difficult where it would be hard to get. Let's be honest here, if a burglar really wants in your house, they'll break in. But if they so happen to just search for one and find it easily, that gives them easy entry. That's when I decided maybe I should invest in a lock box. Looking all over the web, most of the ones I found were the push button kind like this: GE AccessPoint 001015 KeySafe Original 5-Key Permanent, Pushbutton, Titanium Gray or real estate kind that hangs on your door like this: KeyGuard SL-500 Punch Button Lockbox The problem with the push button locks are that they are 1) expensive, 2) the reviews are hit & miss, and specific to the GE ones, 3) the "access code" is not order-specific, meaning if your code is 5231, someone could press any of those numbers in any order to open the box. The problem with the door hanging type is that it is 1) unsightly and 2) typically not as secure/strong as the wall mount kind unless you get a heavy duty lock (which is typically more expensive). That's when I found this Master Lock key storage box. With 226 reviews and a 4-star rating, it seemed perfect for what I wanted. This thing is heavy duty strong. Every aspect of the body is made of metal and if someone wanted to break into it, they would need more than a sledge hammer to break it open. It comes with 4 mounting screws about 1" in length so no additional hardware is needed (unless of course you want to mount it to a brick/stone wall). Also the instructions are in depth and easy to follow. By default the passcode is 0000 but it can be reprogrammed to 4 digit any combination on the fly. As for mounting it, I swapped out the 1" screws with 1.5" decking screws. The mounting holes are in a diamond pattern and I will say that if you use a power drill like I did, you won't be able to drill the screw into the bottom hole because the drill's bulk prevents you from getting the screw in straight unless you have a really long bit (or bit extender). I had to use a standard screwdriver and manually screw in the 4th screw. Once mounted this thing is going nowhere without a lot of trouble. As another reviewer said, a burglar would probably just give up and break in through the window if they really wanted to get in your house because attempting to get the box open or steal it is not worth the time/effort. I'm very happy with this product and I would highly recommend it to anyone. It seems safe, sturdy, and provides me and my wife with protection necessary in hiding our spare key.

Easy to mount and easy to use. I have the front door key inside and i've given the code to friends and relatives. Then, if they know we are home and they call several times and no answer, they can ask for a welfare check and give the code to open the door to the authorities. Maybe we need help and maybe we are in the back yard and didn't hear the phone. But either way there is no need to break down the door to check.

When I first moved to this neighborhood in 1983, we had this lovely older neighbor lady, Ms. Ross, who was our unofficial "keeper of the door keys" for all the homes in our neighborhood. Ms. Ross and her retired husband, well known to us, were a completely trustworthy couple of the highest moral standards. (I actually don't know if you could find people of that caliber today.) You simply cannot imagine how many times my kids arrived home from school while I was at work, discovering upon arrival that they couldn't get in because they'd forgotten to take their door key with them to school. They'd run over to Ms. Ross across the street, get our key, unlock our door, and then take our key back over to Ms. Ross, our keeper of the keys. Well, Ms. Ross, bless her sweet heart, is long gone now. Times have changed too, and I just don't know anyone well enough to entrust them with our door key. So I was looking for a solution in case we got locked out of our house. I have just received this item and am initially impressed with the weight. It weighs about 1 pound on my food scales. It seems sturdy and well made. The combination is very easy to set, however the one drawback is that you have to remember to re-scramble the combination numbers after closing it, because otherwise it's not re-locked. (That's not a deal-breaker for me but I think you should consider it.) The mounting seems easy with the four screws they put in the package and the screws are long enough to make it reasonably secure, I think. I like the little door that covers the numbers when it's closed, to keep out wet weather. Could you break it? Well, anything can be broken with sufficient effort, however I don't envision a thief in our subdivision getting out his sledge hammer and hacking away at this box while he's standing at my front door. If you live in a subdivision or around other occupied homes, I think it's probably a pretty safe bet to use this item. My use is simply to have a way to get in if my door inadvertently locks us out when going to the mailbox or to do some yard work. I'm giving the item four stars due to the reports of it's not opening in extreme cold, and as others have suggested, I'll be lubricating mine before using it, just to be on the safe side. We're set to have some more really cold weather near zero in a few days, so I'm going to put this item through the "acid test" and see if it opens in the cold weather. A thought crossed my mind: what if someone lived alone, and fell but could not get up, could reach a phone but could not get to the door? And if their door was locked, would emergency services get in without breaking down the door? Most exterior doors are pretty solid, and usually secured with deadbolts like mine. I remember when my mother fell and broke her hip when she was in her 70s: she managed to reach her phone to call me, but could not have crawled to her door. Thankfully her door was unlocked when I got to her house...but this might not always be the case. As we all get older, we should consider situations like this for our elderly relatives who live alone. ===== Update: I mounted the key safe a few days ago, after first spraying it with lubricant. I'm happy to report that this morning it's 10 degrees with some wind, and it opened right up when I set the combination, without any difficulty whatsoever. I got this as a gift for my neighbor since she came over frantically looking to get her spare key that she gave to us for safe keeping and just did catch me before I went to work. I've had one for years but purchased it at a home improvement store and paid twice what this cost. I've been happy with mine and tried ordering much cheaper ones (from another site) to find out that they are plastic even though the description said metal. I should have known. Master lock is a reputable brand. This one is really made of metal, although probably zinc. I'm sure it's much more secure. They are easy to operate and set code also. Also very durable, even exposed to the weather. Can be painted to hide it also if you want. Much more secure than silly fake rocks that are so obvious or small magnetic key hider that can be found easily.

This is a good alternative to the lock put on your door to hide a key in case of an emergency. The local Police sell the "knock box" for a couple hundred dollars that is supposed to be vandal proof. I think this one cost only a few bucks. I connected it to my garage door frame with big screws--no one is going to take it off without waking up the local police. I put my front door key in and gave the combination to my remote (I've fallen and can't get up company), who will give the combination our local Emergency Responders when they call, and my kids and a neighbor. I assume it will work, but hope I never have to use it.
