  • It's not perfect, but it works for me. I'd get something nicer if you need to cake a lot
Once you figure out this winder’s quirks, it works just fine. The instructions say you should just point the metal piece straight up and then pull it out as far as you can and then it should stay, but mine definitely doesn’t. Especially if you try to wind even a little bit fast, it falls over. Inconvenient, but I just hold it in place while I’m winding - not entirely horrible as this also allows me to guide my yarn a little more. You can also attach the base of it to pretty much anything you want. I’ve put it on my closet shelves, windowsill, and even a regular cardboard box (like the ones Amazon delivers a lot of items in, not the super thin one the winder itself came in). It works for me as I don’t need to cake up yarn super often, but if I did, then I would for sure want something nicer. I did include a picture of two yarns that I caked up; you will be relatively limited by the position of the metal guide. The red yarn that I caked up was around 255 yards, and it was almost hitting the metal guide, so you won’t be able to cake up anything much more than this if you use a 3 weight yarn. Larger weight yarns will likely be even more limited. ... show more

  • More fun, less frustration.
I have a new hobby, and wasn't sure if they using a yarn winder would make it easier or not. I am doing machine gun tufting, and when you put your thread through the tufting gun, it has to pull freely, without any tension on the yarn at all. Any tension and you will find yourself constantly rethreading the gun. Apparently that is the number one mistake newbies to this hobby tend to make. It leads to endless frustration. Since being able to feed yarn without any tension is the key to succeeding, I tuned into some online videos to find out what other people are doing to keep their yarn from pulling out of the tufting gun. Many people have their thread on cones, but a cone winder is tool that has apparently not been perfected for home use. The few cone winders I found we're prohibitively expensive, and seemed targeted to professional users who sell yarn wholesale I got the MARTINA ONLINE ORGANIZED TANGLE-FREE PORTABLE HAND OPERATED YARN BALL WINDER hoping it would feed my yarn freely. It creates yarn “cakes”, which wasn't a term I was familiar with. The yarn winder itself has two methods of winding: one for doing loose cakes and one for doing tighter cakes. Apparently it depends on which way you turn the handle on the yarn winder. I found either method allows my yarn to feed through my tufting gun, and come off the cake with no tension. After winding cakes, I could feed two of the same color yarn through my gun, at the same time. Because I was taking them off the cakes, I had my most successful tufting session yet. I did not have to stop and rethread, and stop and rethread again, over and over. I was able to work right through until I had used all the yarn on both cakes. This is such an improvement over constantly rethreading, it's hard to express what a difference it made. Tufting turned from tedious to fun. It took me very little time to get the yarn winder figured out, and I barely glanced at the directions. It works well. Compared to the frustration that it alleviates, the price is a full-on bargain. Even though this is made entirely out of plastic, with the exception of the tension wire. it seems sturdy enough to me,and it should last as long as I need it to. The one weak spot in the design is the tension wire. Even if it were to break, though, it wouldn't prevent you from being able to use the yarn winder to wind your yarn. I've even held the thread instead of using the tensioner, and it works ok. Since I've never used this product before, or anything like it, I'm not able to tell you if spending a little more, for one made of wood , would make a difference in the performance. I have wound several skeins of yarn into many yarn cakes, using this, with very little effort. Having this extremely handy device has made my hobby a lot more fun, and much less frustrating. ... show more

  • Works great!
This yarn ball winder works great! Stays mounted in place and doesn’t move around while I’m winding yarn. Definitely an upgrade from hand winding my yarns. The only thing I don’t like is the tension holder. It always falls down and doesn’t stay in place for long. Other than that I really like it.

  • Makes a ball of yarn
This strange lite device does exactly what it says it will do. It makes yarn into a tidy ball. I had a bit of frustration with it - The instructions are simple enough but no matter what I do I cannot make this a "one handed" process like it describes. I found that I had to crank with one hand and create medium tension on the yarn as it feeds through the metal loop. I also found that if I crank too quickly the center post will go flying off the machine. So now that I've used it and figured that out I can do it better. ... show more

  • Small capacity
This is so much easier than winding yarn by hand, even into a messy ball. The capacity of the winder is a little low. I had a not quite complete skein of #4 yarn, and I was bumping up against the guide thing by the time I was done. It's also easy to dislodge the guide loop when winding. Even with that, still a very useful product, and the compact size is even mostly a plus ... show more

  • Make cake!
Okay so this thing has saved me a ton of hassle. I now have a bunch of yarn cakes rather then jumbled messes of yarn. Super easy to use. The only issues I had was trying to get the metal arm to stay but once I did it was a breeze from there.
