This is THE marking knife. Honestly, for what it is, it gets 5 stars. I have used this for projects many times now and it's just a fantastic marking knife. The handle is durable, finished, and a comfortable size to hold, and the blade is flat on one side and came remarkably sharp. The price and value is everything you could want. I keep it stored with the cap on and in the nice little box it came with. I expect to have this for life and pass it on to one of my kids. And there's more to it. One of my children is left-handed and will easily be able to choose which hand to use this in as bevels are ground for both cutting directions. I don't regret the purchase at all. I will say that there is a place for marking knives with flat handles that match the flat of the blade (so, not this one). As this handle is rounded, you won't be able to run the handle along one board to trace onto another. Now, that's not to say you can't do it with this, but it's better to use two steps with this one: use a square to match and then mark along that. That is a specific use scenario, though many people prefer Japanese style marking knives for that reason. Lastly, this is NOT a scribe. I don't use scribes and will modify my marking gauge to have cutting action instead. The goal is to cut the wood fibers. You'll have an edge to fit a chisel in for a knifewall, or an edge ready for table saw, miter saw, circular saw to reduce tearout. With a pointed scribe, you need to (or at least should) go over the line with a marking knife afterward. I could go on and on. I'm just a hobbyist though. I will say I'll probably grab a Japanese style marking knife as well at some point, but more because I like tools, not because I need it. TLDR: If you need a marking knife, you can't go wrong with this one.

This appears to be a decent marking gauge for the price, couple observations: + Solid parts - all machined from single pieces, no glue joints + Flats do prevent rolling away + Good tolerances - no slop, easy movement on the thumbscrew, beam fully retracts to protect the cutting edge. nice machining Minor quibbles: - IMPERIAL ONLY: despite answer above, the one I received had no metric markings - Flange surface is on the small side I would also note that the disc is not a wheel, as it does not rotate at all...but I think this is probably a slop-avoidance choice and likely has no impact on scoring ability (or might even help...I thought the last one i had was able to spin, but I wouldn't swear on it) Anyway perfectly adequate and I kinda liked the small size, but did want the metric markings and am disappointed to find them missing after asking about it
