I know our unit was a return based on packaging but appeared unused. This is a nice starter machine. Has a light, reverse and table. It is plastic lite weight. Comes with a dvd to show how to thread. 11 year old was delighted. It will not sew heavy fabric and is meant as a quick easy machine. I might borrow it for small jobs. The foot pedal is small leave machine to off for pedal the switch for fast & slow auto start the machine. Much better than any toy. So far we like it. I took sewing lessons in Jr High and am now in my 60's. Sew, I have sewn on and off for a long time (mostly off) - on Singers from the 40's, to high-end Pfaff's from the 70's (still such an excellent machine - my sis has, since she does the big sewing projects) to my portable Brother I purchased about 12 years ago. Compared to a real seamstress, I am a puff ball. But, I guess threading a SM is like riding a bike, once you know how.... So, for me, this was straight out of the box super easy. I was looking for a tiny footprint SM for my Mom's house to do quick mends and possibly hems or small projects, and this completely fits the bill. Has all the expected SM features and even more accessories than most of the units this size out there. It took me forever to decide on this one, but I'm glad I did. In just a few short minutes after pulling the thing out of the box, I was mending my pile of stuff. Even changed bobbin and thread with that supplied, and it was all pretty much a no-brainer (especially since it comes threaded the right way - so just take a good look b4 u change anything!!). The straight stitch is OK, but the zig-zag is actually quite impressive. Fabric feed is tolerable. Have no idea how long it will last, so did get the warranty (which I hardly ever do), which defn adds to the price. Still, this is so much easier than lugging my Brother back and forth and then trying to find space on the table for a standard-sized sewing machine. Lastly, while I am usually a HUGE direction-reader, I guess I just wasn't feeling patient, and I passed on them completely. Testament to this SM being very standard in its operation. I feel lucky that I really like it and that it seems to be defect-free. The one worry I have is that when you move the stitch selector, you can feel it really being tough to turn sometime. Given the plastic parts in this machine, I would think that is one thing that could break over time, especially if you switch stitches often. If that breaks, you'd likely need to replace. ... show more

Not a great machine to teach a beginner sewer. The thread keep breaking and the needle broke while I was teaching my daughter how to do a basic hem. Not sturdy very toy like & cheap.

We returned because the directions did not help hard to read and there was no videos or anyway to look up how to use it. Not for beginners. All model numbers do not match box directions and or on machine.

my daughter has used this 4 or 5 times at most during 2 months. and she has already loosened parts and screws. now I can't change it because the warranty time has passed. spend a little more and buy a professional machine

This was everything they said it would be. It was a sturdy machine and my granddaughter took up sewing on it pretty quick. The different length and types of sewing was easy for her.
