Had to replace 10 year old Harman Kardon amplifier. Because I'd had and loved a Marantz when I was in college in the 1970's, decided on the Marantz brand.     • Abysmal Networking
Sound is superb. But networking is awful. And if you try to use the HDMI ARC input, forget about it. I routinely have to unplug the whole unit to have it play from my iPhone — and the app is awful. Expected way more at this price point. I end up using a $100 BT speaker most days. #fail

    • Great power, relies on digital processing for quality
This is a great sounding amp, and I use it for both movies and music and everyone loves the sound. The power is possibly slightly underrated and is plenty for a class A amp. I like that I’m able to stream high res audio to it and I can tell that it’s high res audio. I will say that if the digital filter is turned off, the sound is just a bit muddy and no longer quite worthy of this amp’s price point. So it is relying fairly heavily on its DSP. I will also say that someone needs to spend quality time fixing bugs in the HEOS app. ... show more

    • No reason to give it less than 5 stars. but….
If this is your first serious venture into audio, I believe this will blow you away. Which means, you will actually hear details you have never heard before. This is still, provided that you have the speakers to give this justice. Don’t expect this to transform your sound bar into IMAX. If you are at the point of diminishing returns, this may or may not be for you. It might make you happy, but don’t expect it to blow you away. My 34-year-old Luxman is still able to provide more details on the highs than the Model 40n. Although this thing rocks on lowers. It does pop, rock, electronic justice. Even acoustic versions of pop songs are awesome. Nothing to hate about the soundstage, with the right speakers, it feels like you are in the same room as the artist. When it comes to Jazz, or classical, you might find it lacking a little bit, but hopefully not to the point where you don’t enjoy, because I still did. I tried streaming and it’s still high tier quality. So is apple play. The DAC is awesome, but it didn’t blow me away. But playing music locally from my mini pc and an external DAC provided a lot more superior detail. Because of this, the only value of streaming brings to me is for when I have parties and such. I can’t say much about the built-in phono because I connect my turntable through an external preamp and I just use one of the line-ins. But I can say that it performed very well with my setup. Setting this up was a pain. Almost enough for me to take out a star. Setting up through Wifi didn’t work for me. But it worked fine when I connected it through the wire. Connecting the USB directly to it sucked big time, it didn’t work and it would not play my tracks. Good thing I connected just to test because I prefer using my external DAC. Perhaps I should have given it more time to scan the hard drive. There are no tone controls on the lovely metal remote, but I always set mine at source direct anyways: In conclusion: Unfortunately, because of my setup, HEOS and the network/streaming stuff, is of not much value to me, but it is still very good quality sound. As an amp? At this price range? If you like listening to the mainstream genres, you will LOVE this. If you want versatility, this amp is a good choice. If you refuse the compromise a little for Jazz and classical, probably not for you. ... show more

    • Excellent hardware spoiled by unnecessarily complicated and unhelpful software
I will give the hardware itself a 5-star rating. However, the engineers at Marantz have superimposed a cumbersome and unnecessarily complicated software app called HEOS (that the user must install on their cell phone). The worst part is that you have to jump through a bunch of hoops to install HEOS to discover that the software only allows you to stream music from only a small set of "selected" music streaming sites, e.g., Tidal. Interestingly, HEOS excludes youtube.com and its premium version (music.youtube.com) which provide, by far, the most comprehensive selections of music and music videos available. So, for someone like myself who uses music.youtube.com, the streaming function provided by the Marantz unit and its HEOS software is unusable and useless. Had I known this in advance, I would have purchased the Marantz 30n instead without any "streaming" capability. Suffice it to say, that I used a cable to connect the Marantz 40n to my computer and am bypassing the highly limited streaming function. More knowledgeable computer techs out there might be able to figure if Marantz could have configured its streaming function in a straightforward way so sound could have been downloaded from any online site. ... show more

    • Great amplifier for streaming services.
I love this amp. I had NAD and many other amps. I always missed the integrated support for Airplay 2 as many streamers don't support it yet. The Marantz Model 40n does. So happy.
