  • Awesome little ripper.
This little trim saw rocks. I had the old brushed version for a few years. It took years of daily abuse doing remodels. It was my go to saw for accurate/precise cuts. It was getting tired so i figured it was time for an upgrade. An upgrade it certainly was. This saw blows my old one clear out of the water in all categories. I use it everyday. Its the saw i find myself grabbing first before my other two 7 1/4in saws. Its almost as strong as my 36v rear handle saw but feels about half the weight. Cutting 2×4 spf and even treated is smooth as butter. It even rips well too. The LED light comes in clutch in low light areas. Buttery smooth cuts. Highly recommend to anyone on the makita platform. Especially a homeowner or diy. This is all you'd ever need for smaller projects around the house. Im sure i could cut all day with it to frame without a problem if i had to. But i have bigger saws for that. ... show more

  • Far superior to other Makita models... Superb, well thought out design touches.
I've used 4 different Makita 6.5" circular saw models on the job site and can confidently say that this unit (XSH03Z) is far and wide better than the rest. Biggest pluses are: 1) Brushless motor - runs cooler, longer battery life, and translates in to more power. 2) LED illumination - just enough additional light to ensure the cut is on point. 3) 5,000 RPM with automatic torque converter - This extra speed makes a surprising amount of difference compared to the 3,000-4,000 RPM models. The blades cut far smoother and there is far less tear out from your material. It makes a battery powered saw cut and feel like a high power corded saw. The automatic torque adjuster kicks in should your material be extra tough...it drops the RPM's down but kicks up the torque to prevent bogging down / binding. Very nice touch! 4) 45 degree lock on the bevel - there is a nice flip down tab that allows quick adjustment to a rock solid 45 degree bevel cut... As opposed to eyeballing where the 45-degree mark actually is. Nice time saver that ensures consistency. 5) Brake - the automatically engaging blade brake that kicks in after the trigger is released is a wonderful plus. Once you have that feature, you'll never go back. As for negatives, for the price & class of the saw, there really are next to none. However, here are the couple that stick out: 1) for a saw that costs in the 175-200 range, it is a bit ridiculous they don't include the $13 Makita 164095-8 Rip Fence with it. It's not a critical accessory by any means, but it's sometimes nice to have and worth the ten bucks or so. 2) I wish this model had the blower that puffed air by the front area of the blade to improve visibility (like the finish saw model). Not a big issue, but would be nice. In summary, this is a first rate saw in its class. Other than this item, the next real step-up is the Festool track saw (which I own & love like no other)... however, this saw & vacuum combo runs in the $1,500 range and is like comparing apples to oranges. ... show more

  • You want the best?
I've got 4 of them. Every guy in my crew wants one. Had my first brushless version for a long time, used every day. Then I backed over it with my dually... Hmmmm.. whoops! Guess what, still worked! (Ya, we tried!) But the plate was all crooked... So I gave it to the new kid so I could yell at him for not being able to cut straight... Ha! At any rate- second one I had, someone on the crew did something to it.. hopefully not run over it with a truck... There's a small piece of metal that attaches the plate to the handle. It's at the back of the saw. Some how, some one dropped it just right and it bent ever so slightly so that Now This One Didn't Cut Straight Either! So I take it to the tool guy. Nope. Can't fix it. It's the older model... I'll look for the model number and update this posting when I get a hot minute.. not THAT old, couldn't be cuz I just bought it. At any rate- so I bought two more!! It's that good!! Second bent plate model goes with the framing crew. ... Let's be honest.. framers cant cut straight any way.. HA! So, long story short- cuts perfect. Lots of power. Use it every day, all day. Smooth as butter with the variable motor speed. Little LED light is hella cool, way better then cutting in the shadows. Very light weight. Rafter clip rules- ESPECIALLY, especially -pro tip here- for holding the blade guard back when cutting at an angle or dropping in... As long as your not dropping in to your thigh like my plumber.... Stupid plumbers... Last note- one of my guys got a Milwaukee, which, yes is quality, but the mark on the plate for where the blade is gonna cut... WAY off! Makita cordless circ- better than red, better then yellow. Last, last note- don't take my ramblings to infer defective dohicky that attaches back of plate to handle.. just the opposite. We abuse these bastards, day in day out. ... show more

  • Glad I finally bought it
I'm a long time fan of the Makita 18 volt platform, I have lots of 5-amp batteries and chargers. . I looked at this saw a long time before I finally bought it. It is SO NICE. Light in weight, no annoying cord and more powerful than my corded Skilsaw. I cut 2x4 and 3/4" PT plywood like a hot knife through butter. I bought the Makita 40T blade and it is great for general use, cuts very smooth in a variety of wood materials. I'm building more structures on my farm since buying this saw. Not having to mess with a cord and having this much power in my hand is addictive. I bought the more expensive of the two models available and I have zero complaints. The guide on the saw is precise so I can just "wing it" on a variety of small cutting jobs and it's perfect. I wondered if the smaller diameter cutting capacity would limit me but it has not been a problem, I've cut everything I wanted. The only way I could be happier is if I could go back in time and buy this saw sooner. Another 18 volt cordless Makita winner! Happy sawing to all! ... show more

  • Works so far... fixed the loose base Works so far... fixed the loose base
So far so good but as with everything, time will tell. The saw is quite a bit smaller than I expected, which is ok. I'm not used to having the blade on the left side though and am very cautious not to get my left hand near the blade. Quite spooky until I get more used to it. The blade it comes with is terrible for attaining smooth cuts. It's a framing blade so not really unexpected, but not good for plywood as it just tears it up. It'll be replaced very soon. Power seems sufficient but nowhere near a corded model's speed and torque. Still cuts fine and the added bonus of no cord makes it worth it. Just love cordless tools! As reported, the base plate rattles when it's locked. Very annoying! I fixed it using a very thin stainless washer from a computer hard drive head bearing. The washer is placed between the black bracket and gray mount shown in the photo. The washer is only .0075" thick, and it's basically a "shoulder" type washer. The bolt the washer has to be installed on is a shoulder bolt and the nut used on this bolt can only be tightened up until it hits the shoulder on the bolt. This is why you cannot tighten the nut any further than it already is. A washer needs to be installed on the shoulder bolt in the place indicated to take up the space (slop) between the black bracket and gray mount. I realize that many people may not have this particular washer, but if you happen to have old computer hard drives around you don't need/use, perhaps it'll have a similar washer on it's head bearing... not all hard drives will have this washer. There is virtually no play on my base plate now... discounting the little play due to the angle pin slop. All in all a good mod and I'm very happy with it! Next mod... fix the rattling blade guard! To add to the unofficial survey... my saw is made in China. ... show more

  • This XSH03z Saw CANNOT Take Makita BL1815 24w Batteries. Beware.
UPDATE: I received a couple of 5Ah Makita BL1850B batteries that cost like a million dollars and a new DC18RC charger to power the saw. The saw is, in a word, terrific. Instant blade brake. Powers through 2x4s. Compact, lightweight. Turns out my two older Makita DC18RA chargers are able to charge the 5.0 Ah batteries. Wasted money buying the DC18RC charger. So now I have three chargers, four 2 Ah batteries and two 5.0 Ah batteries. Oh, well. I bought a Makita 3/8" impact wrench on eBay for less money than Amazon. It's on the way. It uses the same 5.0 Ah batteries, so it's all good. Original review: I have two sets of the black and white Makita 18v 1/2" drill and impact drivers, Makita LCT400W 18-Volt Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless 4-Piece Combo Kit, four BL1815 batteries and two DC18RA chargers. This saw CANNOT receive the BL1815 24w Makita batteries. They simply will not go onto the saw. Had to order very expensive Makita BL1850B batteries and a new Makita DC18RC charger. If you want this saw, but only have the BL1815 batteries, do not buy the bare saw, get the kit. The kit comes with two large batteries, a charger and a nice carrying case for less than buying the saw, batteries and charger separately, and I don't have the carry case. Needless to say, I have no idea how the saw works as my existing Makita batteries cannot power the saw. Waiting on new batteries.... ... show more
