  • Smooth, powerful and accurate.
I've got a three circular saws: a worm-drive, this one, and an old Milwaukee I bought forty years ago. I use them a lot. I was using my Makita this morning (A bobcat killed half my chickens, so they're getting a covered pen), and it occurred to me I ought to write a review, because this is the saw I usually grab. I can't say exactly why. It just seems light, nimble, easy to use. It's got a good sight line, it cuts very smoothly, and for whatever reason its just easier to cut accurately right along your mark with this saw. I think somebody must have spent spent a lot of time getting the ergonomics just right. I bought mine eight years ago: it runs good as new. I feel a little guilty abandoning my old Milwaukee, which is indestructible, but a clunky and unwieldy beast. ... show more

  • Great saw, sturdy - smooth- solid. However- heavier model so caution if you are a professional framer doing a lot of quick work.
This is great, professional grade (and I used to be professional anyway, I use this one a lot but more for personal building). One thing to note all you framers out there: You CAN'T use your speed square as a guide for quick cuts (real woodworkers now know I am a hack, but if you're framing you know what I mean). The engine will knock the speed square. This means you have to do things the right way. HOWEVER, this thing is so stable, you quickly grow into it. I ripped a bunch of sheets with this and they were the straightest I ever cut (my table saw just sits there sad and alone). If you plan on quick framing or climbing around with it, however, I'd go for a different saw (maybe I'm just lower skilled or getting old, but I like a lighter saw when framing out lots of walls in a short time, et cetera). As it is, this one is perfect for on the ground work, your shop, et cetera. Heavy duty and solid, makes great cuts and rips sheets beautifully. Used a metal blade to cut some steel siding too, and it held up to that kind of work wonderfully. ... show more

  • Wonderful for a DIY-er, decent for contractor use
There is little I can say that hasn't already been said so I'll keep it short and sweet: For the $100 or so I paid for it this saw is a great deal. For the MSRP of over $200 I would look elsewhere, there are better saws for less. OK a lil' more info: For the DIY-er who works on something once or twice a month this is a saw that will probably last a lifetime so long as you can bother to remember to change the carbon brushes every now and again and strategically add a drop of oil or 2. The controls are straightforward. The base is very square and strong. The motor is more strong enough for anything you could expect a circular saw to do while also running and starting smoothly, and the blade guard won't bind or catch on stuff. Oh hey, and there is a light too which can come in handy too even in daylight conditions. DIY-ers are set!! For the contractor who needs something to use and abuse 10 hours a day 5-6 days a week for years on end this saw will be serviceable, even good, but not great. Don't get me wrong, it'll still be a big step up from the cheaper Craftsman or Kobalt mid-tier saws and the Harbor Freight stuff will seem like the total junk it is in comparison. First is that its kind've heavy, particularly compared to the ones with a magnesium ally base. The 2nd is the angle adjustment brackets are made of plastic (flexes/less durable then metal) and have no pre-set angle stops: spending more time playing with adjustments and making sure your cuts are correct means less time doing actual cutting and work! The blade it comes with is pretty mediocre but good enough for ripping, no one sells a saw with a good blade in the box anyways so I wouldn't ding it for that. BTW you can make the rule measurements "pop out" on the base by rubbing a crayon (green of course) into them. Only takes a minute or 2 and cleaning up excess is easy with some Goof-Off. Voila, measurements are easy to eye ball once again! ... show more

  • Saws sharply and sweetly. Some saw!!
This is the second of this sinilar model Makita I have purchased, I've had the first one for so long I can't remember exactly when I bought it. Still use it but at the summer place. Needed one here and got tired of hauling the original back and forth. Simply put: these are great, solid and dependable tools. I am weekend woodworker. I do not abuse my tools. I have several Makita tools including an ELECTRIC chain saw that is joy for an old guy. Yes, I HAVE tried other saws. Last one was red and white and I gave it to a neighbor after the 4th or 5th time I used it. I had a silver and red one for a while but finally junked it when I saw just how OUT of square it was and how the blade was "cocked". Don't waste your time and money. Buy this saw the first time. Odds are you will be using it twenty years from now. ... show more
