If you bake and use a lame to score loaves you know that it is basically a razor blade in a holder. All of the hazards of handling razor blades are in play whenever you use one, so I want whatever safety tweaks I can get. This is a retractable double edge razor blade holder which is spring loaded to retract as the default position. You need to keep a finger holding the button in the open position whenever you use it. Personally I think it's a good idea. The lame has a magnet for attaching it to any metal surface and this is convenient not only for keeping the device handy but also out of reach of others who may be injured. There are 5 extra blades enclosed and considering that you have two edges available and you can flip the blades to expose new cutting surfaces that adds up to 20 clean cuts. Of course standard double edge blades are easily available so this tool can last indefinitely with careful use.

This works really well for scoring bread. It's compact, sharp, and very easy to use. The retractable blade is important, because unless it's locked into place during use, it stays in its sheath. It contains a small magnet on the other side at the top that can be used to keep it on your refrigerator, for example, if you use it a lot. It comes pre-loaded with a blade and also has 5 replacement blades as well. There are directions for replacing the blade, but since I don't bake bread often, I don't foresee having to replace it anytime soon. I'm not a professional by any stretch of the imagination, but I can see that a long-handled blade might be easier than this one for someone to make more intricate designs. Overall, this works very well.

It works, but I wish I didn't have to hold it open while cutting. Other than that, it gets the job done!

Sourdough baking is tough to begin with. I was using a chefs knife when I started but I've been using this lame and it's been a lot easier to navigate. The bread making is still a work in progress but making designs is a lot harder than it looks. You have to hold the blade out to use but it actually wasn't hard to use.

You don’t need this tool, but it works better than most alternatives. When I make French bread, I’ve slashed the loaf to allow the rising loaf to expand when placed in the oven. A very sharp knife can be used, but sometimes the dough grabs the blade. Using a razor blade eliminates the issue. This tool is very simple and works exactly as you’d expect. Changing the blade is easy (extra blades provided), though you shouldn’t have to replace the blade very often. Good price, good functionality.

The media could not be loaded. But not for arthiritc hands or those with dexterity issues. replacing the blade can also be a pain. using this compared with the long handled one, gives more leverage in scoring dough, more control. Comes with extra blades.

I like this lame and the extra blades are wonderful, what I dislike is I wish it were a bit bigger in my hand but that is not a complaint just a personal preference.

I have bought a few of this style of lame, and for my use (occasional bread loaf baking) it's a good design. It has an auto-retract blade, so unless you're actively using it the blade is safely behind the sheath. The magnet is a nice touch - if you use it frequently you can keep it out attached to your fridge or oven. If you're a professional or doing fancy score patterns maybe the long handle ones would be better/easier but I appreciate how little space this design takes up in the kitchen and the extra safety of the auto-retract blade.
