I am currently serving in Afghanistan and decided to buy this light after I saw one of my buddies using. I was amazed by how bright it was, especially being so very small. It was perfect for what I wanted, which was a good small light to keep on me while I worked at night. I have had it a few months now and use it fairly often. It is super bright, even at a distance on the full setting. I tend to always use the dim setting because it is plenty of light and saves on the batteries. The dim setting on this light is brighter than a lot of other regular flashlights I see other guys using. The casing has held up extremely well to the hot dusty environment of Afghanistan for the few months I have had it. It fits almost perfectly into Nite Ize LHS-03 Clip-On Flashlight Holster with Stretch Capability and 8-Position Rotating Clip and stays well on my belt. If I keep the light from pushing all the way into the holster, it protects the end cap from accidentally turning on. The only major flaw that I have encountered is the end cap. It is very easy to accidentally bump it, turning it on without noticing and killing the battery. It will eat through batteries also on the high setting, but I haven't had a need to use the high setting much. I have only changed the batteries once since I have bought it, when the high setting became about as dim as the dim setting normally would be, though I suppose I could have kept using the old batteries a while longer. I would also really like to see Maglite make a tactical attachment set for this light like they do the 2AA Mini Maglite; which includes a clip, hex roll stopper, and colored lenses. Being able to have a red lens quickly attach would be a big plus for those of us in the military. But for general use, this is a top notch light. I will definitely be picking up another one or two when I get back home and probably will be giving some as gifts. ... show more

I’ve owned 4-5 of these over the years. It’s all the flashlight anyone needs. Too bright at 200 lumen w/o a colored lens filter. All modes are nice for carrying at night. The high is great for powering a colored lens and still being a decent flashlight. That makes reading something, seeing the tire you’re changing, or not blinding your dogs possible. Dogs aren’t bothered by the colored lens BTW POP the lens off and it’s a light cannon. Puts a beam out over 50 yd in an urban setting. Suitable for first responders. Plenty tactical. The low setting is excellent for seeing inside of 10ft. The stobe, Hope I never find out of it works. I presume it does. I have a lanyard for hanging them People fret over AAA batteries. I run rechargeables and pop a new set in at the first sign of weakening. They go fast then they go. They last for many, many hours. Don’t sweat it. Get 3 sets for each light. Only downside is that it’s easy to accidentally turn it on in your pocket. Many tacticool folk find Maglite not as capable to handle a zombie apocalypse. It’s a crap load better than any light I’ve used through the decades. Better than what the military hands out. Get real Made in USA. Had batteries ruin a light. Never had a light fail from Maglite. Probably owned a dozen. What’s not to like. ... show more

There are better, more expensive flashlights out there, but for the price, nothing compares to this. Flashlight fanatics don't like it because it uses AAA batteries, but unless you are a spy, SWAT team sniper or soldier, AAA batteries are a huge plus because they are available everywhere. It's incredibly bright (so bright that I use it on the low setting most of the time), has a longer throw than others with similar lumens, longer battery life (although I doubt it will get the 8 hours and 45 minutes on high that Maglite claims), it's anodized inside and out, easy to operate one-handed, and it's the ONLY flashlight that is made in the USA. The few things it lacks are really non-issues to me, but it all comes down to personal preference: 1. No momentary on/off - no big deal to me. 2. No pocket clip - non-issue to me because I always use a holster, specifically this one: Nite Ize LHS-03 Clip-On Flashlight Holster with Stretch Capability and 8-Position Rotating Clip 3. No lanyard - non-issue to me because I never use lanyards. Not necessary with the Nite-Ize holster. 4. No tailcap lockout - again, not necessary with the Nite-Ize holster. 5. Nothing to stop it from rolling when you set it down horizontally - no issue for me because I just leave it in the holster, and you can always get an anti-roll adapter. I have one from my old Maglite 2AA and it fits the XL50 perfectly, but I don't really use it. 6. No SOS mode - Hopefully I'll never need it, but it would be difficult to send SOS manually since repeated clicks put you in other modes (low power or strobe). You'd have to do it "smoke signal style" by blocking the light beam with your hand, which may not be possible, depending on the situation of your emergency. I'd gladly trade off strobe mode for SOS mode. The pros certainly outweigh the cons and, to me, make them irrelevant. If you want an American-made flashlight, Maglite is your only brand choice. If you want one that's extremely bright, extremely durable, easy to use, and has a longer run time than most with batteries that are easy to find, the XL50 just might be the best choice regardless of manufacturer. ... show more

Got the 2AA mini maglite first. Horrible. Kept randomly turning itself off. Replaced with 3AAA XL50. Excellent. Stays lit when you push the button. High and low settings. Low is plenty bright for almost all uses and doesn't kill the batteries as quick.

I recently compared three compact LED flashlights available in the same price range: Maglite XL50-S3016, Rayovac Roughneck RNT3AAA-B and Mini-Maglite SP22017. Here are my findings: [Batteries] Both Maglite XL50 and Rayovac Roughneck are powered by three AAA cells, while the Maglite Mini uses two AA cells. In term of battery cost, the Maglite mini is more economical to operate. This is because each AA cell contains about 3x more energy than AAA cell, yet they cost the same to buy. Point: Maglite Mini [Size] See the photos I uploaded to 'Customer Image' sections for size comparison. The XL50 is more compact than the Roughneck. Both are shorter and thicker than the Maglite Mini, making them easier to hold. Point: Maglite XL50 [LED Light Output] On paper the Roughneck is rated at an impressive '200 lumen', while the Maglte XL50 is only '104 lumen' and the Maglite Mini is '69 lumen'. In actual side-by-side comparison, however, the beam from XL50 is brighter and whiter than that of Roughneck. See my beam shot comparison photos in Customer Images section. Point: XL50 [Electronic Switch] All three flashlights offer multi-function electronic switch to turn the LED on at high power/low power or blinking mode. - The Maglite Mini's electronic switch is activated by twisting its reflector, which is not easy for one-hand operation. It you twist the LED off and then back on within 3 seconds, it advances to the next mode (High/Low/Blink/S.O.S) - The Roughneck's electronic switch is poorly designed. It forces you to cycle through all three modes (Low/High/Blink) before turning the LED off again. - The XL50's electronic switch is much better designed: -- First click for High Power, second click to turn off -- Two rapid clicks (within 0.5 second) for Low power, next click to turn off -- Three rapid clicks for Blinking mode, next click to turn off Point: XL50 [Runtime] According to manufacturer data: the MagLite Mini is supposed to have a runtime of 18 hours, the Maglite XL50: 8 hours 45 minutes, the Roughneck: 2 hours (all at High power). In reality, all those numbers are highly exaggerated because they measure the runtime until the LED brightness drops to 10% of original brightness. In my actual experiments, the Maglite Mini (powered by eneloop rechargeable cells) provided a runtime of about 7 hours, while the Roughneck only 1.5 hours. I cannot measure the runtime of XL50 at High power, because it kept dropping back to Low power after about 7-10 minutes, presumably because the LED was overheated. Point: Maglite Mini [Power Management] All three did poorly in this aspect. Both XL50 and Roughneck are really bad because they have zero power regulation. That means the LED is being driven directly from three AAA batteries. The LED current (hence brightness) is completely at the mercy of battery voltage and internal resistance. The Maglite Mini at least made some attempt in power regulation, but the LED power still drops rapidly with lower battery voltage. Point: Maglite Mini [Adjustable Beam] Both Maglite mini and Roughneck advertise adjustable beams, but they both have very limited variation between 'spot' and 'flood' mode. The beam from XL50 is not adjustable. On the Maglite Mini, you can remove its reflector use it in 'candle mode'. The Maglite XL50's reflector can also be removed, but the resulted beam is more like a flood light. The Roughneck's reflector cannot be removed. Point: Maglite Mini [Ruggedness] Both Maglite Mini and XL50 are rated for 1-meter drop on the package. The Roughneck's package does not contain a drop-rating. Its product description claims '5-foot drop' (1.5 meter) at one place and '7-10 foot drop' (2-3 meter) at another place. I did not try any drop test intentionally, but I have dropped my Mini several times from higher distance and it survived Point: Rayovac Roughneck (?) [Conclusion] If you're looking for a compact LED flashlight that is super-bright and easy to operate, then Maglite XL50 is the obvious choice. But in terms of overall design (considering runtime and battery cost), I have to give Maglite Mini the edge. The Rayovac Roughneck is not worth considering unless you can get it at much lower cost. ... show more

I have owned MagLites since the '80s. My first was the six D battery flashlight and I still have it and it works although it is a bit beat up. I still own quite a few pre LEDs, they still work, I have two on my desk now. The XL50 is no different to me, still a MagLite, still solid and bright. I have other brands that are way more expensive but I keep the XL50 nearby. ... show more
