Let me start off by saying, don’t believe the hype about T8 or T5 UVB tubes. They are a lot more expensive and aren’t all that great. I bought a Zilla desert 50 UVB fixture because it’s supposed to be better than a CFL bulb. When I used my solarmeter to test the UVB output, it was weaker vs this CFL. At 12”, the UVB output was 2.1. Move either right or left the length of the fixture and the UVB output was 0.9-1.0. Not acceptable for a 18” fixture. Using this CFL bulb at the same 12” height, the UVB output was 2.4 directly in the middle. At 10” high, which is about to the top of my Sulcatas shell, the UVB output was 3.0 directly in the middle. Move off to the side, it’s a little bit higher, and a little bit further away and the UVB output was 3.4. I can’t attest to the longevity of the bulb yet, but as of now, it’s been great. Bought this UVB 5.0 bulb to replace the old UVB 5.0 bulb that was used for my red-eared slider turtle tank. Decided to try this unknown, inexpensive brand to save money after using a well known and pricier brand for quite some time. After I replaced it and turned it on, it took a while to light up. I felt that was odd since I never had that problem before from prior UVB bulbs. Anyway, I waited for a couple of minutes and then, it made an electrical sound. Then, it started flickering like a strobelight, freaking out my red-eared slider turtle. I immediately turned it off, took out the bulb and inspected it. I noticed the end of the bulb being dark grey instead of white, looking burnt out. I am just glad it didn't shatter! Returning this and replacing it with the former, well known brand that I trust! ... show more

Great product! This just gives off light!! Please don’t buy if you need both or you think this will. This shall be paired with a uvb light that gives off heat also. My iguana responded to this immediately!!! This is helping him gain his strength back from a mild case of MBD

Seems like a great, quality product for other reptiles. I will admit lack of knowledge and the fact that I should have researched more. But my beardie was not acting right after using this and come to find out it does not put out adequate UVB for bearded dragons. I had this for about a week and came up one day smelling an od smell. Little did I know it was smoking and flickering. The fixture was new, the bulb was new, and the wattage was fine. No idea what happened with this bulb but it did disappoint me quite a bit. So far my other bulbs haven't had the same issue, with the exception of one that had a manufacturing defect, so it's only the Herp bulb that has had issues so far. I may try this again at a later date but right now I cannot immediately recommend it. ... show more

I bought this at the recommendation of a turtle expert when my red-eared slider turtle was acting sluggish. Living in the NE can be cold, and though his tank is in the sun, he wasn't getting enough light. This lamp changed his whole well-being! It still works well since I purchased it last summer - excellent quality. It's not a heat lamp (I use a separate heating element in addition to this lamp) - it's to provide a substitute for sun when you have an indoor pet who needs the rays. I've been buying these for years，I bought this to use for my turtles and with this light my turtles are happy. Works great! Came packaged well and undamaged. Bulb was not cracked or broken in any way. it has held up great. Bright enough to see everything . Would highly recommend!
