  • Buying more for birthday gifts
Color: Grey
I purchased this robot kit for my six year old son to assemble. The directions were obviously too tedious for him so we watched a few YouTube videos that explained how to build the robot. It was so simple that my 6 year old refused to let me help with building the roly-poly robot. I literally wasn't allowed to touch it. After about an hour and a half, he built the robot on his own (he only cut out the parts as needed--with child scissors) The solar component was a bit weak and so the robot only seems to work if you shine a flashlight directly on the solar panel..but it definitely worked. I am planning to purchase at least 5 more robots to gift to my son's classmates as birthdays roll around. ... show more

The Lucky Doug 12-in-1 STEM Solar Robot Kit is a fantastic educational toy for kids aged 8 to 13 years old. This kit provides a hands-on experience for children to explore science and engineering concepts through building and experimenting with solar-powered robots. The 12 different robot designs offer variety and challenge, keeping children engaged and fostering creativity. The solar aspect adds an eco-friendly and interactive element, teaching kids about renewable energy in a fun way. The kit's emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) skills is commendable, making it an ideal gift for kids interested in these fields. The educational value coupled with the joy of building and playing with the robots makes it a thoughtful and enriching birthday or gift choice for both boys and girls. Parents may appreciate the durability of the components and the opportunity it provides for quality parent-child bonding during the building process. Overall, the Lucky Doug 12-in-1 STEM Solar Robot Kit is a well-rounded, educational, and entertaining option for young minds. ... show more

  • Challenging and fun to assemble
Color: White
This toy could be appropriate for a 8 year old who likes this kind of toys but I think that it might be good to have an adult to help assemble the robots, the fun part about this toy is the assembly process and then the feeling of accomplishment once it works. I think that an adult help is needed for several reasons: 1) All the parts come in several plastic molds that need to be clipped off with a wire cutter or something similar. In some parts, you'll need to make sure to cut off any remainder of the plastic mold or the robots won't work (Specially in those parts that rotate). 2) Some pieces need a bit of strength to put together, but you have to be carefull not to break them. If you make a mistake, it also requires certain strength to disassemble. 3) It's challenging and fun to make it work, maybe a 8 year old by itself could feel frustrated. (Most of my mistakes were because I didn't cut the pieces properly). 4) The main part where the motor is, requires a bit of testing with the gears to make it work, but it isn't very hard. I'm not sure if the parts will allow to assemble and dissasemble 12 times to build each robot, I think that some will break in the process. Overall, I consider this a good toy, giftable, it requires patience to assemble, I think that for a 8 year old kid who is starting to play with this kind of toys might be very challenging. ... show more

  • Headache - Avoid
Color: Grey
Pros - -STEM related -looks like a robot (specifically like Wall-e my child pointed out -solar panels -motor -included sorting zip-lock baggies with sticker labels Cons -All the pieces come in the manufacturers sheet, all still connected. This took me an hour and a half to get all of the pieces out of their sheets, 30 minutes in I told myself to trust my gut and return it, but i pushed on as it was a gift -since all the pieces come connected to a sheet you have to clean the burrs off the connection points or they wont fit together, but since the plastic is brittle and thin enough the prongs got twisted and bent or broken that there are only a handful of reliable pronged pieces -tiny solar panel -i got this as a Christmas gift, while I live in Minnesota, which is a time and place where the power of the sun is decreased, so the solar panel couldnt power the motor effectively -tiny motor -since the motor is so tiny and the solar panel is so tiny there isnt enough juice to apply enough force to all of the gears that are stacked together to move the robot, so it kept binding up -also the shafts that come out of the gear box are smooth cylinders which have other smooth cylinders that connect to them to attach wheels, which means, any power applied to those shafts is reduced when the shafts slip on each other so the robot still doesnt move -the coupling mechanism between the solar panel and motor is very loose and popped apart many times during construction and attempted operation -the instructions where missing letters and words, and were also low quality english -there were quantities of pieces marked that werent present. ex. shown as 3x piece a, but only 2x of piece a were present. Conclusion- just skip this product. Definitely a NOPE ... show more

  • crocked mounted gear ruins the whole thing
Color: Grey
So it takes a long time to punch out all the pieces, then you assemble your "drive" box. one gear comes pre installed/glued to it's axle and the driver of all the other gears. Mine came mounted on it's shaft crooked, so the gear spins till it hits it's low spot, gets stuck.... you can manually nudge it past the low spot by manually spinning with a screwdriver or something similar, but on the next rotation it stops again. Simply manufacturing flaw on a 5 cent part. I'd love it if they would simply just send the defective part replacement, but instead you have to return the entire thing for one tiny but critical piece. ... show more

  • Oh, did my grandson love this!
Color: Grey
My grandson was so thrilled. He had asked for robot parts for Christmas and I didn't know what he was talking about. I saw this and thought I'd try it and so happy that I did. I think this will be my go to for gifts for him. He loves the STEM toys and it keeps him occupied for hours, building and playing. And I think his Dad enjoyed it as much as my grandson! ... show more
