Ah, the famous Flying Scotsman! It's a real piece of history and worthy of looking up, ... first locomotive to surpass 100 mph and such. This model is a very simplified example, sold as a STEM toy, but interesting to the adult modeler too, if you want to get more creative. As a toy, it's not a bad example of these bolt together metal kits ... especially for the price. Yes, some pieces won't fit quite right, the instructions will be vague in parts, and getting the bolts to line up with the nuts is a medium challenge ... so probably not for a child as their first metal kit. But for the more experienced kid or adult, it can be a fulfilling experience. I'm an older adult with previous modeling experience, mostly in wooden ships and planes. These erector-set type models are new to me, simple but fun. They almost beg to be modified with all those extra unbolted holes. So get goofy creative! I went with a "steampunk thing" using metal gears I bought and random brass and copper pieces I could find in junk drawers. The pointy brass in the front is from an old archery sight. There are two cut down shell casings, some plumbing connectors, brass picture hangers, etc. etc. I enjoyed the whole process. So as a simple metal toy or more ... thumbs up! ... show more

  • Not for 6 year-olds, but still
Style: 869-1
Box says for ages 6+. That's impressively hopeful. My 8 year-old wanted a beer after finishing this. But, it's a nice model. The instructions are a series of pictures with no text, just "make yours look like theirs." A few of the pictures assumed too much, so beware. There are two parts you have to bend yourself--they give you a straight, rectangular sheet and just write "bend this" to make a curving, cylindrical shape. I'd try to bend it around a pole/pipe/chair leg/etc. to get it smooth and actually round. Lining up some of the holes for the bolts is a minor pain, especially if you have adult-sized hands. Overall it's a nice kit, but you'll probably grumble about it. ... show more

  • Difficult assembly
Style: 9902
I am 72 years old and can assemble just about anything, but this assembly kicked my butt. There are no written instructions, just diagrams. I finally got it assembled. I recommend patience!

  • Model Airplane for Christmas!

  • don't love it
Style: 869-1
not my husbands favorite project. It was missing parts so there was a lot of improvising. No instructions, just pictures, which was like trying to build something from IKEA. It also has you bending parts into a circle but no instructions as to how to do it and some of the pictures so many pieces are scrunched together that its hard to tell what to part of it you are supposed to do. Would not really recommend unless the company makes changes and make sure that all parts are included ... show more
