  • Will be great for our Maine Coon
Size: 8 x 4 x 6 Color: Black
After reading some other reviews from people who use this for cats, and looking at some of the photos, I decided to order this cage (4'x8'x6') and we're not sorry. My husband and his friend put it together while I was at work and I was pleasantly surprised to some home to it all set up with the cover on sitting in the area of our property where I wanted it. They said it took about an hour. We plan to add a big tree branch and some perches and other necessaries so that we can put our Maine Coon kitten (Floki, 6 months old as of this writing) out on our grass to watch the birds and wild rabbits that come into that area to eat. He's a big boy and he is an indoor cat but we really want him to have some quality outdoor time in a safe environment without his harness/leash, and this enclosure is perfect. I put Floki inside for a little while and sat to watch, see if he tried to push through any areas. At first (when looking online) I was concerned that he might be able to squeeze through the gaps around the door but there's no way he could. He's almost 10lbs now and he's bulky so he just won't fit through any of the spaces to get out. That said, we bought some extra bungies to secure the door better because I don't trust that he couldn't open that latch at some point, intentionally or by luck. We also plan to fortify the cover so that he can't find a way to slip under it to get out. It's pretty doubtful that he could even now but I don't want to take a chance. I saw that one customer put chicken wire over the top so we might do something similar but it will be nice to still be able to put the cover over that sometimes for added shade or weather protection. I do like the idea of more light and visibility with the wire the top. In our case, Floki will be in an area that has some fruit trees and there are lots of birds for him to watch. So a wire top would let him see above him as well as around him. I bought some heavy duty stakes that are made to loop over the bottom and go into the ground to hold the cage in place, but this enclosure is heavy and short of a tornado or a hurricane (neither of which we get here), it's not going to blow over or away and Floki isn't going to move it no matter how hard he tries! For now, I highly recommend this enclosure for one or multiple cat. Since it's got a 6' roof pitch you can take advantage of that height by adding branches/shelves to give your cat plenty of climbing space. There's nowhere in the caging that an average adult cat should be able to get out. A kitten could probably slip through the bars but not for long, they'll be too big within a few months. The top is the only area of real concern for possible escape and you should probably take measures to make sure your cat can't find away under the cover to get out. I'm sure this enclosure would work well for small dogs. It's secure and strong enough for bigger dogs too as long as you better secure the door. I wouldn't want to leave bigger dogs in this size enclosure for long but for a little while or maybe overnight as a kennel, it would work. Cats could hang out in this enclosure for hours and be fine. Do make sure your animals have adequate shade especially in hot weather and don't forget a litter box for cats, and food and water for cats/dogs. I'll post a picture when we get ours fully set up. ... show more

  • Arrived damaged, poor welds, but overall nice kennel
Size: 8 x 4 x 6 Color: Black
This is a very nice kennel that was easy to assemble wit one person. It appeared well made, but two of the panels had faulty wire welds were the wires connect to the top rails. The wires were either completely broken and detached or they were barely holding on with a stand of weld. Also one upright tube was collapsed enough that I could not place the rubber ca in it to prevent rain from entering he tube and rusting out. Since the broken welds were at the top, and my new pit bull is just a puppy, she won't escape that way for a couple of weeks, but she will eventually find it. I am in the process of asking Amazon to send two replacement panels rather than returning the unit, which seems like a waste of time and money. This kennel is a bit pricey but it is convenient to set up. It is not a super strong kennel and will not stop any size dog that wants to get out by chewing through the wires. UPDATE June 28, 2017: I contacted Amazon about the damage, they gave me two options: call the manufacturer or they will ship out entire new kennel and I return unused parts for refund (i would be charged for new kennel if not returned in 40 days). I emailed the manufacturer, jewettcameron.com and was told to send pictures and proof of purchase, which I did. Within 24 hours I received an email response: Hello Fanny, We will get the two replacement panels sent out today, you are looking at 5-6 business days for delivery, delivered by UPS. Adam Van Scoten Customer Support Ph. (800) 955-2879 Fax (503) 647-2272 [email protected] I will update review once the panels are received. In the meantime my dog hasn't broken out (25 lb pit bull puppy) but I did chain the bottom of the kennel door closed as she could pull it back with her teeth. If she pulled hard enough, either the latch would have come off or the wire would break. The chain has stopped that so far. UPDATE July 3, 2017: I received the two replacement panels last week, right on time. Thank you, Adam from Jewett Cameron! I promised I would update my review. The panels worked great and I fully assembled the kennel with the top on it. I am impressed with the top, it is very well made. I am confused how to use the bungee balls, but I think I figured it out. The instructions were kind of washed out print and not clear to read. I added two sliding bar gate latches to the top and bottom of the door to replace the chain I was using. I bought the 4" long kind and they work great so far. My pup puts her teeth on the door and pulls slightly, but gives up quickly. In a couple of months, she will be able to rip right through the cage if she wanted, but I think she will learn to calm down in it. I also built the kennel up on a raised wood deck foundation and strapped it down using conduit ties that I had to drill holes for in the kennel frame to anchor the bolts in. The kennel frame is thin aluminum and not difficult to drill through if you start with a smaller bit. Overall, I am impressed and this was money well spent, especially after the quick customer service response to fix the production problem with the original panels. ... show more
