  • Good, not great, needs software improvements for Alexa voice command.
Style: Logitech Harmony Hub
I’m giving the Harmony Hub a 4-Star rating because it is good, not great, needs better install information and needs software improvements for Alexa Skills and voice commands. If you read this review to the end you may feel my joy, frustration, emotional pain and relief when I finally discovered how to make Harmony Hub work with Alexa voice command. Was this emotional roll-a-coaster worth it. Yes, at least for me and hopefully for you. My advice is to call Logitech the instant you have a problem. I do not advise the roll-a-coaster ride. I received it on November 23 and was having a problem downloading and installing the Harmony app on my mobile phone so I called Logitech customer service. I’m an average techie, not a beginner or expert. I gave the customer service rep a 5-Star rating because his assistance was very good, he was polite and I understood everything he said and I installed the app. He asked if I needed his help with the Harmony Setup, I said no, I should be able to do that. I downloaded the app on my tablet because I like the larger screen. I have three devices (cable set top box, TV and audio receiver) and my goal was to use Alexa voice commands to turn on the TV, etc. I followed the Harmony Setup process in the app. 1. In the Watch TV page pressed the settings button (3 horizonal lines in upper left), clicked on Harmony Setup, clicked on Add/Edit Devices & Activates, in Settings- Devices, I added my TV, cable set top box, and audio receiver to Devices, then clicked on the next arrow. Then clicked on Activities, clicked on Watch TV, then clicked on Edit Start Sequence and clicked on the TV and audio receiver to select the Input for each. Then clicked on the next page arrow to Settings, clicked on Edit to add Favorite channels (up to 50 available). Then I went back to the Settings page, clicked on Watch TV, Activity Summary page and scrolled to bottom of page. Clicked on Re-Run Activity. On Select Devices check my three devices, clicked next page, Power on Devices, (all devices are off) then click ON for each device and followed instructions at bottom of page. 2. Then clicked next page and followed instructions. Then tested each device. Then click on the back page button and go to the home page where it synced. For a lot of us this whole thing was a pain in the ass, but it works for me. 3. Next I added the Harmony Hub app to my Alexa Skills and I was able to use voice commands to turn the TV on/off, change channels by name or number, channel up/down and increase/decrease sound. The next day, November 24, began my frustration with the Harmony Hub. I had a problem with the Harmony app unlinking/disabling with Alexa skills. Alexa said “I could not find a video skill available for that, go to Alexa skills to manage your apps.” I called Logitech customer service. The customer rep had me uninstall the Harmony app on my mobile phone, uninstall the Harmony app on Alexa skills and then reinstall the app, connect the Harmony skill to Alexa, I was able to say to Alexa, " Turn on/off TV", "Turn to CNN/Fox News, ESPN" and "Turn to channel 43" and all those voice commands to Alexa worked. Before the customer rep ended our call, I asked Alexa to change the channel and Alexa said the skill was not working. The customer rep asked me to unplug the hub and Alexa and disable the Harmony skill. Then I re-plugged the hub and Alexa for a reboot, enabled the Harmony skill. Then Alexa was able to turn on the TV, change channels by name and number. The customer rep said if this happened again, unplug and re-plug the hub and Alexa, then disable the skill and enable the skill and repeat above instructions. How many cars would be sold if the ignition unlinked from a new car’s engine while driving and the manufacturer customer service said, “Turn the ignition key/press start button.” The Harmony app in Alexa skills continued to disconnect/unlink for three weeks and I went through the reboot process. Then on December 7, three weeks of this painful process (some people said I liked the pain, I said I can fix this), instead of turning off Alexa and Harmony Hub and disabling Harmony app from Alexa skills and resetting everything I said “Alexa TV channel down." After Alexa changed the channel down, I said, “Alexa, turn to channel 39 and the Harmony Hub worked. Now I know how to manage this issue with the Harmony Hub. When I ask Alexa to change the channel and it doesn't, I say “Alexa, TV channel down." This fixed the problem and I can continue to use Alexa voice commands to change channels. I like the Harmony Hub and like the ability to say, "Alexa, turn on the TV", change channels and sound level. I have adapted to this weird software and Alexa skills partial “sleep mode” as I call it because the Harmony Hub app does not unlink or disconnect from Alexa skill, it just needs to be refreshed as described above. Also, I strongly recommend Logitech make a series of professional videos by Harmony instructors along with Harmony developers/programs who can take the Harmony purchaser step by step from downloading the app to Alexa voice command: 1. Harmony App installation to mobile phone or tablet; 2. Harmony setup with up to the eight devices; and, 3. Explain why the events that happened to me and other purchasers occurred and how to fix it. The Logitech website has minimal info. Another Harmony Hub issue: My Arris cable box remote has a "last" channel button, if I am watching channel 7 and change to channel 39, the "last" button press takes me back to channel 7, not up or down channel or next or previous channel. My Harmony Hub app screen has two buttons displayed on my cable box device, one as a partial circle with an arrow, when pressed will change the channel to the last viewed channel. There is also a channel return button below the channel up and down buttons. This channel return button changes the channel to the last viewed channel. But there is no "last" channel viewed Alexa voice command available at this time according to an email I received from Logitech customer service. Why not? Here are some Alexa voice commands: "Alexa, turn on the TV" "Alexa, turn off the TV" “Alexa, turn on channel (say number)” "Alexa, turn on ESPN." “Alexa, TV channel up” “Alexa, TV channel down” "Alexa, (next/previous) channel" "Alexa, turn volume up on my TV 1 (or 2, 3, 4 or 5 increments)”. If you say Alexa turn volume up, it will increase volume to maximum. Then you have to say Alexa, volume down or Alexa, mute the TV. "Alexa, turn volume down on my TV 1 (or 2, 3, 4 or 5)” "Alexa, mute the TV" I hope this makes it easier for people who already own a Harmony Hub and future owners. Update 12/22 2018: Logitech emailed this message to me, 12/22/2018. They are trying to solve this issue that should have been included in the software. They should have better user/buyer quality control before the product is for sale. Advertising that the Harmony Hub now has Alexa voice control to operate the TV, but really has partial voice control when the app has full TV control results in negative reviews. Consumers should not be the quality control department. It took my three emails about this issue to receive their email below. But, at least they are trying and that's good. Dear michael, My name is Elois, I understand that you would like assistance with your Harmony Hub. Your request to add the “last” viewed channel with alexa utterances has been forwarded to our Product Specialist and they might need to communicate with Amazon about this matter. We cannot promise if this request will be applicable since it was Alexa's limitation, but we will be sending an email notification once we got an update. • Read this Tutorial for linking with Amazon Alexa -- difficult but it works.
Style: Logitech Harmony Hub
If you are looking at the Logitech Hub, chances are you are either meaning to purchase this to work with your srmartphone or table -or- integrate it with Amazon Alexa. If you are looking for smartphone or tablet integration, let me say up front that it works great. You can be up and running in no time. This tutorial will help you get started. If you are looking to integrate with Alexa, be prepared to spend a significant amount of time to get it working. I have been a die-hard Logitech remote owner for well over a decade. Have bought every one of their remotes, and am thoroughly educated in setting up their products. This wasn't a difficult product to set up as far as its basic functions, but when it came to integrating with Alexa, there was a lot of trial and error. I hope to give potential buyers an easy tutorial on setting up their device. 1. Upon receiving your Logitech Hub, the best way to get started is with a desktop or laptop computer. Log on to: myharmony.com and click on the Sign in/Setup icon to begin. What you ultimately want to do here is download the Harmony App for Mac OS X or Windows. I am using Mac OS X. 2. Sign into the app either by creating a new account, or, using an existing account. You will want to add a new product. Have your hub and the included USB connector ready to hook up to your laptop. Once you sync the hub to your computer, it will find your WiFi network. You will also have the opportunity to give your hub a name. 3. Adding devices to your Harmony Hub via desktop software couldn't be easier! All you need is the manufacturer and model number of each device. Add your television, Blu-ray/4k/DVD player, receiver/stereo, Tivo/DVR, Apple TV/Roku to devices. When you add each device the software will ask you specific questions regarding how you control each device. 4. Next, you will have the opportunity to add Activites such as "Watch Television," "Watch Blu-ray," "Watch Roku." When adding each of these activities, the software will give you the opportunity to link up those activities to each device. Do remember that most televisions are actually controlled by cable company DVR devices so be certain to add those devices and indicate (if applicable) that changing channels are controlled by the DVR box. 5. This is very important: Go to FAVORITES in the Harmony desktop software app. Be sure to put in your Zip Code, select your local cable provider, and enter your absolute favorite TV channels. These are channels you will ultimately be telling Alexa to TURN ON. Find the Sync button on the Harmony desktop Software App and sync the settings to your connected hub. Now disconnect your hub from your computer and plug it into the wall near your display and components. Plug in the IR blaster to either one of the two inputs on the back of the hub and place that blaster in a centralized location within your system so it can reach all devices. 6. Install the Harmony App on your smartphone or tablet. Log into the account you created on the desktop software. The smartphone or tablet app will download your configuration. You now have a remote on your portable device. This is a good time to test all your functions from your mobile device to make certain each of the commands (such as WATCH TV) are working correctly before moving on to the next step... If you are planning to integrate with Alexa, you will need to do the following additional steps... 1. Download the Amazon Alexa app on your smartphone or tablet. If you already own Alexa, you already have this app downloaded. 2. Go into the app. Open the side panel (click on the 3-lines on top left of app) and select Smart Skills 3. Do a search for: Harmony 4. The two main apps you want are the BLUE "Harmony - Optimized for Smart Home" and "Yonomi." Now "Yonomi" may not be essential, but I could not get Alexa to recognize the hub without it. 5. Download and install Yonomi first. It will ask you to create an account. It will then ask that you link your Amazon App. Don't worry about any of the settings inside of Yonomi. You really only want to link it to your Amazon. 6. Next, install the BLUE Harmony App. It will ask you to link to your Harmony account -and- your Alexa account. The big thing you want to do here is giving all your devices and TV channels "friendly" names. These are names that you will give commands to Alexa. For instance, "Alexa, turn on CNN" or "Alexa turn on CBS" 7. After you have completed setting up the BLUE app, make certain that Alexa discovers all your devices. You should be automatically prompted to have Alexa do a Discover. Go into the Alexa App side panel (remember the 3 lines on the top left), select SKILLS and then DEVICES and make certain that the hub is online (it should be tied to Yonomi) Now it is time to test Alexa... Say, "Alexa, turn on television." Say, "Alexa, turn on CNN" Say, "Alexa, turn on Channel 2" You can also have Alexa turn on and off your other activities. OPTIONAL.... If this has worked successfully for you, the next thing to do is repeat steps #6 and #7 immediately above and install the RED Harmony skill. That skill enables you to control volume and other more advanced functions. What needs to be done diffferently with those commands is that you have to tell Alexa: "Alexa, tell harmony to turn up the volume." "Alexa, tell harmony to....." So, the red app is a companion to the blue app. It can be a little more complex with its commands as they aren't as straight-forward as the blue app commands but both these apps are designed to work together. Just remember which commands to use for which functions, This wasn't the easiest thing to set up, and really, I can't believe that Amazon and Logitech couldn't get their act together to make an app that is more straight-forward to use. Hopefully, in time both companies will put out another app that solves the problem of having to use two different apps and two different set of commands to control your entertainment system. Hope this tutorial helps. ... show more
