  • It was ready to use right out of the crate, perfectly aligned and with adequate power.
I think it's more valuable to compare this lathe to another one that I have. I purchased a 750 watt 210V lathe from eBay in 2019. A few weeks ago, the motor died making some strange noises. 210V cost about $1,000 back then. I hated it immediately. It was totally misaligned. When cutting spindles, they would come out tapered. It ate belts, which were expensive and difficult to obtain. It came with gears for threading that matched no common imperial threads. The tail stock wiggled all over the place. It did have a simple clamp for the tail stock and it had a digital tach. This lathe from the Little Machine Shop came totally aligned. It doesn't have a tach but I don't know if that adds much since you can easily change to an effective speed without one. I predominantly work with brass, making bushings and screws. There are clear instructions on using the lathe including threading, which I have yet to try on this lathe. In spite of the 250 watt motor, it was plenty powerful and never slowed down when drilling center holes through brass rods. It comes with an adequate, 3-jawed chuck already attached holding a dead center and drill chuck MT2 with a 1/4" drill bit in it. While it comes with tools, you will want a 17 mm combination wrench to reposition the tail stock. The Little Machine Shop recommends using the OXA quick change tool rest. They have spare parts in stock. The lathe, while MIC, is made according to The Little Machine Shop's specifications and they supply evidence of its alignment prior to shipping. You may need 4 M6-1 screws of appropriate length to secure this lathe to your workbench. It is supplied with 4 such screws (with washers) that are about 30 mm long. The lathe was secured to the crate with 3 longer M6-1 screws but neither were long enough for my thick workbench top, which was 45 mm thick. (I could not find such screws here on Amazon without having to buy a box of 100 of them.) Should you decide to order this lathe, while waiting, obtain a source for your screws. Measure your workbench top and add 1 cm to that length for the insertion into the lathe feet. The tray under the lathe is pre-drilled. 3/8" holes work fine. Make sure you're not drilling into or too close to the table frame! I used the lathe before getting the screws and the lathe didn't move around all that much. The lathe weighs around 100 pounds. The wife and I are in our 70s and didn't have much trouble lifting the lathe onto the workbench. The 210V lathe was heavier. This is not the only lathe sold by The Little Machine Shop. As this inexpensive one is so good, I would not hesitate to buy a larger one from them should I need one. ... show more

  • Know your limitations.
For the price and capacity this is a decent little machine. I have used it on mild steel, aluminum and cast iron. It did what I needed it to do, some jobs just took longer. I will say that the chuck shipped with it is very dissapointing. I replaced the notchy 3 inch chuck with a good 5 inch with a pass through capacity slightly greater than the lathe. I also upgraded to a quick change tool post, I didn't like how the 5/16s tooling had to be shimmed to achieve proper positioning. The upgrade also allows me to use 3/8 tooling and the 5/16s if I absolutely have to. Understand what you are buying and what it comes with (I also added a carriage lock because it doesn't have one). Don't expect to be chucking chips on large pieces or taking huge rough cuts because this is not the machine for that. I use it in a small motorcycle and scooter shop so I have found a ton of uses for it beyond what I expected. Even though i upgraded some pieces i still think it rates 5 stars because of the capabilities it opened up for the shop and the small footprint it takes up. I'm happy with it. ... show more

  • Nice lathe for a home shop
I am retired and enjoy building things in my shop. I recently added metal fabrication and am just learning, so I don't know the limitations of the lathe. My first attempt resulted in a lot of chatter, but it did cut the piece easily. After watching a lot of You Tube, I had an idea of what I needed to buy. I called the company and was very happy with the customer service. I ordered a tool package with help from the salesman and look forward to learning machining. Response from the company is fast and helpful and I landed up buying a mini milling machine from them. Little Machine Shop has a full catalog of accessories and upgrades and is the kind of company I enjoy working with. Since I live in the interior of Alaska, many on-line stores will not ship to my address. I'm glad I found a reliable company that will work with me. ... show more

  • Excellent first lathe for someone new to maching
The lathe is well made. The lathe and accessories that came with it will get you started right out of the crate. I purchased the Little Machine Shop 7"x14" because it is set up to work in imperial and metric. I am a novice hobby machinist so my skill level is not that high right now. The machine's Users Guide and the information and learning resources on the LittleMachineShop.com website are excellent. LittleMachineShop.com has all the tooling, accessories and parts that I will need for this machine. I set the machine up in an hour that included cleaning it and mounting it to my table. I followed the Users Guide on loading material, operating the cross slide, compound slide and mounting the cutting tool and turned a piece of 1/2" mild steel both manually and with the power feed an hour and half after I set the machine up. ... show more
