Description

Liquitex offers the broadest range of acrylic mediums to inspire creativity at every stage of the painting process. Surface Prep Mediums are used to seal prime and add tooth (for color adhesion) to all surfaces such as canvas wood paper and metal. This same preparation is used for both acrylic and oil paint. Our professional gessoes usually take just one coat, and adding Liquitex Soft Body color to any gesso creates customized tints and primers. Liquitex Clear Gesso Surface Prep Medium is an ideal high tooth for pastel oil pastel graphite and charcoal. Excellent ground for acrylic and oil paint. Mix with acrylic color to have a tinted ground. Dries clear to translucent depending on thickness. Excellent base coat primer for many applications, including murals. Can be applied to any material or surface that will accept traditional acrylic media, such as canvas, paper, wood, etc. Liquitex Surface Prep Mediums are lightweight, non-toxic, and dry to a water-resistant, non-yellowing surface. APPLICATION: For canvas, paper, wood, or any clean porous non-oily surface. Sizes and primes while maintaining the original appearance of the surface. Provides paper with good tooth for chalk and oil pastel techniques. Mix with a very small amount of transparent or translucent acrylic color to tint the ground, while maintaining transparency. Clear gesso is a requirement for mixed-media artists and art journalists. This is an excellent clear gesso. It goes on easy and thin, without waste. This gesso is not the cheapest clear gesso, but you get the quality you pay for! I purchased the largest bottle, which was the cheapest per ounce. Buying in volume does pay off! The Liquitex container closes sealed completely, therefore this gesso will not dry out and become useless, allowing you to use it for a long period of time! works nice- i mix with acrylic paints to create custom colors and use it on heavy watercolor paper to prep for pastel paintings- It results in a nice tooth, and can lay down several layers easily- i haven't used anything like uart sanded paper so i can't compare the texture between the 2- but i used unsanded paper before trying this method and it is a real nice step up in quality for laying down pastels easily=- ... show more

    • Good stuff for preparing paper for soft pastels

Good, soft pastel paper is very expensive, and I have some cheaper watercolor paper I wanted to use for my soft pastels. I heard on YouTube that you can use gesso to simulate pastel paper, so I experimented and tried this on the watercolor paper. This gesso worked like a charm, and has just enough "tooth" to make pleasing results on my watercolor paper. I also am a watercolor artist, and like to layer pastels in certain areas of my paintings, but found that I can only get about 2-3 layers, depending on the color. (I use high- quality soft pastels.) If I coat the watercolor painting with gesso, I find I can do about 6 layers very nicely. This helps so much to make pastel paper at a fraction of the cost, and a little goes a long way, so the jar should last a good amount of time. ... show more

This is the first Gesso I've used, so I can't compare it to other brands. I used this on an adult coloring book to prepare the paper for wet mediums. I painted it on a few test pages and let it dry (didn't take long but I live in a warm climate). The page feels rough, almost like a sand paper feel, it definitely added tooth to the paper. It also slightly changed the color of the paper, it's a little more off-white now. I tested the following mediums on top of the clear Gesso: Prismacolor color pencils: Worked really well. Was able to apply a lot of water and blend. I could even go in after the watercolor was dry with more water and re-work it. Was able to use lots of water without destroying the non-watercolor paper. Koi Watercolors: Same as the watercolor pencils, as far as how it behaved. Several types of colored pencils: Didn't work well, I'm not a fan of using pencils over the Gesso. The lines were rougher and hard to blend and control. They created a lot of colored dust too so that could stain the picture if you aren't careful. Sticklers: Able to apply where needed, no issues. Acrylic paint (Americana): Was able to use acrylic without water, and also with water as more of a wash. Iridescent Medium: Mixed with watercolor, made the applied color very shimmery. Didn't give any issues over the Gesso. Art Masking Fluid: Worked fine on top of the Gesso. Still protected the paper from the watercolor, and when I pulled it off I could still feel the Gesso on the paper underneath. ... show more

I like the thickness of the product. You can water it down if you like. I did try Vallejo and found it to be runny so this is definitely better.
