I ordered this to use as a winch on a landscape trailer. I am happy to report, it works as it should and seems very well constructed. The low gear is very nice to have but you have to unbolt and switch over the handle to use the low gear.... not the end of the world but you have to keep a wrench with you to be able to switch on the go. I ended up taking the handle off completely and using a 1/2" impact to drive the winch, which works well but probably not recommended. Thank you for the opportunity to review your product. A hand crank boat winch can be used for things other than boat trailers. For example, I mounted mine to an upside down truck hitch on the back of my F150 receiver. In this capacity I can use it to pull my utility trailer out of my backyard. I know it’s difficult to imagine, but trust me it works. The construction of this product is heavy duty enough for my needs and heavy duty enough for hauling a boat onto a trailer or releasing it into the water. There are pre drilled holes in its base and hardware for mounting purposes. The only other part that needs to be installed is the handle/crank. Construction is metal except for the strap, which is synthetic. The selector switch has three positions. 1- ratchet strap wind up, 2- ratchet strap release, 3- free wheeling. I prefer a strap winch (33ft) versus a cable winch, each has its pros and cons. I’m not worried about the sun breaking down the strap material, as the only time the winch will be on the truck is when I’m using it. I’m certainly not driving around with it on the receiver. The hook on the end of the strap has a safety snap on it, so nothing can unexpectedly come loose. I really don’t have any concerns with this winch. I ordered this to replace an aging winch on a boat that we share with our son. He lives somewhere else so we haven't installed it yet, but I was able to rig it up and give it some testing. Overall, I would say that this is a pretty good winch and should be more than capable of hoisting our boat out of the water. With that said, I am somewhat concerned with the layout of the spring and release because I am not sure how well it will stand up to the rigors of trailer life. Also, the spring itself seems a little lighter than I would have liked, and we will see how time treats it but for now it does its job. The final concern I have is with the size of the hook which I wish had a bit more heft to it. Again, it will do the job, but I think I will be keeping an eye on it for fatigue over time. The points I made are the reasons that I have taken one star off of my review, but I still feel that I like it enough to recommend it to anyone who is currently looking. ... show more

I don't have a boat or a boat trailer. I do have a blown out disk in my back and live in a rural area. Cutting dead trees, building cabins, splitting firewood, lifting logs onto the small sawmill, and just getting heavy stuff in and out of my truck bed. This winch will help me with all of that. well, maybe not splitting wood, but getting the logs ready to split. I mounted this on an old 2" hitch. I can put it in the receiver on my truck, quad, over the mill to help roll logs onto it, or in the bracket above the garage door for lifting things in and out of my truck bed. My back thinks this is a great winch. It is versatile and works well, so well I ordered another to mount on the front of my 4x8 utility trailer. It makes it really easy to drag logs and other items up a ramp onto the trailer. I am going to make a small nylon rain cover for the one mounted on the trailer. If it came with a rain cover, that would make it extra great. ... show more

I got this to mount to my utility trailer to help load my log splitter and rolling equipment when I'm alone. This is well within the uses for this winch as shown in the product ad. Unfortunately, the location of the crank handle is such that it can only be mounted to a straight bar hitch like on a boat trailer. It can't be mounted on a flat surface or even a perpendicular bar because the handle won't crank. So now I'm going to have to build an elevated, parallel mount for the front of my trailer, which is why it's not installed yet. That being said, I do like the nylon strap over the more traditional cable. I also like that it is made of thick steel and seems pretty rugged. The mounting hardware did not come with lock washers, which is a must on a vibration prone trailer, so plan on adding those. Also, the included mounting hardware seems like it might be prone to rusting, so maybe swap it out if you are planning on a marine environment. All in all, I think this will work pretty well for my application once I rig a sturdy mounting bracket. ... show more

Easy to use, hand crank. Easy to install. Compact size. However, it needs a cover since after it is installed on our flatbed trailer it just bakes in the sun, likely deteriorating the fabric strap.

I mounted this winch on the front my utility trailer and I've been very happy so far. It comes assembled other than attaching the handle which is simple with a few wrenches or sockets. Works well for pulling something that weighs up to about 1,600 lbs. It's a well made 33 ft long strap that facilitates pulling boats, garden tractors, ATVs, etc onto a boat trailer or utility trailer. The gear and ratcheting mechanism is good quality and easy to use. It comes with some hardware to mount it, but you might have to get a little creative with u-bolts or mounting a plate to make it work for your application. ... show more
