But thankfully, the company behind the LightKeeper Pro also offers the LED Keeper -- the complete kit to repair LED light sets! a) Incandescent bulbs have filaments and tend to get warm when lit a while LEDs do not b) Remove a bulb and look to see if the wires are offset or not [Offset = LED; Equal height = Incandescent] c) LEDs have a plastic encasement while incandescent has glass Non-flashing, Clear 2.5 volt Replacement bulbs, 170mA and 0.425 Watts. The LightKeeper Pro can assist with incandescent light sets that are wired in series, meaning you can remove one bulb from a functional section and the section will become unlit. Typically, if every other bulb is out then we are dealing with a control box or a light set that is not wired in series. It Works! But, have reasonable expectations.
I recently bought this because when setting up lights for this year I found several strands were out, including some on my pre-lit artificial Christmas tree. This tool DID FIX several strands of lights using the squeeze-trigger feature. Like others have reviewed, it was like magic. I was skeptical about this quick-fix feature when I bought this, but I just pulled the trigger a few times and the strand of lights came back to life. I was on the verge of putting my artificial tree out with the trash, but this salvaged it by fixing an unlit strand. So, the tool has already paid for itself in my book. However, have reasonable expectations and read the instructions. It will not fix all light strings -- some are beyond salvaging. Some tips from my limited use thus far: - Not all bulbs have the same shaped base, so make sure when plugging it into the socket on the tool that you are lining up the connection points. I had one set where I realized that even though it seemed to fit fine, I had set the bulb socket in sideways to where the connection points were. Once I fixed this and lined up the socket correctly, I tried the tool again and it worked. Light strand saved. - The squeeze-trigger feature does work, but it might not work on the first try. Sometimes it does work on the first squeeze, but sometimes you have to squeeze it a number of times before the lights work. - As the instructions say, some strands cannot be salvaged. If you notice that the bulbs on a string are somewhat blackened around the middle, that's a sign that the string is bad and is feeding the wrong voltage/wattage/whatever to the bulbs and burning them out. You can replace all the bulbs to fix the string and it will just burn them all out again. I did this on a section of my pre-lit Christmas tree last year before ultimately ripping the strand off that section of the tree and restringing it with new lights I bought. - I have only used the current tester feature a little, but it does seem to work in tracking where the current is flowing and where the strand is dead. Bottom line is it does work as advertised, but won't fix everything. Worth trying if you decorate with a lot of strings of lights. Remember, light sets are fairly cheap to buy, but not free, so this tool may save you the aggravation of having to replace a string or two every year. I've seen in other reviews where users were frustrated in tracking down more difficult problems using the current tester, but that is really only worth the effort if you're working on a pre-lit Christmas tree (where it is not just cheap lights to replace, but the whole tree, which is NOT cheap to replace), or on a mega strand of lights that you use for outdoor decoration. ... show more

It does what it claims
I was a little skeptical at first but thought it worth a try. This device is awesome! It’s easy to use and helped find not only one faulty bulb but several in the burnt out strand. It saved about $30 in gas and a new string of Halloween lights. I’m sure it will save us more at Christmas too!

Almost, almost perfect & still worth the cost even if it can't fix every string of lights you have.
This worked, in almost every case, to immediately fix a string of 100 incandescent mini-lights where one or more 50-light portions would not light up. Its handy bulb tester was great, and the bulb-puller also quite useful. The audible voltage indicator worked for *some* strings of lights to find a suspect bulb, but would not ID failing bulbs or bad sockets or wires in every case. (It seemed to have the hardest time with tightly wound 3-wire sets, constantly providing the rapid detection tones at every bulb even if that section would not work.) There are numerous helpful videos available to show how the LightKeeper Pro operates, and indeed it does work just as shown. The instructions are clear, and the tool is safe to operate if you follow those instructions. For the price, this is still a lovely little tool, and if you still have numerous and various strings of mini incandescent lights as we do, and you struggle annually to identify the bad bulbs, as I do, and you swear a lot when trying to figure out why some strings no longer light up, as I do, it is more than worth the cost. True, it might not fix every string. And yes, you *can* buy multiple sets of new lights for less than the cost of the Lightkeeper pro, and save time. But if you don't want to throw things away, and you refuse to let a string of lights beat you (especially as a retired electrical engineer!), and you want that neat feeling of having fixed something, then this is indeed the tool for you. ... show more

Solid Christmas light multitasker
I rarely write reviews, but I had to for this product. This thing is incredible for incandescent Christmas lights; for me that was a pre-lit tree we've had forever. Rarely have I seen any tool with so many features implemented so well. The manual is great, the packaging can be opened by hand and reused to store it, batteries are included and installed, and it even comes with spare bulbs in the handle. I tried so many things before this to fix my dead strings of lights. I inspected it, light by light, with a magnifier looking for broken bulbs. I tried a both high and low voltage non-contact voltage meters, but I kept getting false positives. I tried removing bulbs and testing them with a multimeter, it would give me unclear results. The Quick Fix feature is some sort of black magic; I was very skeptical, but one trigger pull and the string came back alive. The bulb tester works very well (bulb lights up = good) although a bit fiddly sometimes with placement, but the manual covers this (use the metal tool to scrape off any oxide on the leads). The bulb remover makes pulling bulbs trivial, way easier than nails or a spudger. The same tool makes it super simple to flip the leads on the bulbs so you can replace the base. I did not try the non-contact voltage detection, the fuse tester, the mini-light tester, or the wall plug quick fixer. I didn't need to use any of them. This thing is an absolute bargain. Save your money!
I saw the commercial, I watched the You-Tube Videos, I thought AWSOME! So I bought it looking forward to all the benefits it claims. However, I can sum this product up in one word: USELESS! The first thing you need to know is that it will NOT work with light sets that have a programming box for multiple blinking options. --why did I have to buy it to find that out? It's only mentioned buried in the instructional tri-fold. The primary reason I bought the thing is to repair the programmable $18.00-$24.00 light sets, who cares about the standard 150 light sets that can be had for $3.99 in any dollar store? But guess what? It DOES NOT WORK on those either! Yes, I followed the instructions; I read, and reread, them; I watched several videos, I wasted about 7 hours and $18.00. They claim that the number one cause of failure is a bad shunt, and the click method is supposed to fix that most of the time. Well, apparently none of the 6 strings I used it on had this problem, or the click to fix dealie don't work--take your pick, I still can't figure it out. Then I used the sound troubleshooting method. First, it's very inconsistent as on one pass, it stops beeping, on the next pass over the same spot it beeps--and yes, again, I was following the instructions by the numbers, So when I think this is probably the problem bulb, I pull it and test it, the bulb was fine. Using a magnifier and adequate light, I confirmed the socket was just fine. So it told me nothing. Finally, I reverted to the old fashioned way-- replacing each bulb one at a time. Meanwhile, I kept using he light keeper as I went, hoping to see how it acted when the actual problem was manually found. And guess what, it falsely indicated no problem at the bad bulb! (The tester was beeping away, indicating no-problem there!) So, finally I found the bad bulb and fixed it, but no thanks to the Light Keeper Pro. The only reason I kept working on that cheap set for almost an hour was a dogged determination to figure out what I was doing wrong. I mean it worked in all the company and user videos, so it musta' been me right? Pig-headed, never say-die, guy that I am, and again, just in case I'm missing something, I went to work on another set with one of three sections out. Same process same result! Then on a another set that I couldn't fix at all. Bottom line, either mine is defective, or the product only works for a very specific malfunction which, apparently, none of my 6 malfunctioning sets had. If I hadn't seen their commercial, I would have just tossed the errant sets and bought new. What bothers me most isn't the money spent--I'll get that back--It's the time completely wasted watching Videos, reading instructions, and trying to figure what I must have been doing wrong! I have no doubt that I had nothing to do with this gimmicks failure to produce the results promised. Save your money, and more importantly save your time and aggravation! ... show more

works, but finicky
I went back and forth and finally dropped some cash on this. Walked out to my string of lights, the last 5 feet of which were out, pulled the first non-lit bulb out, then inserted that empty socked into the socket connector on the gun. Clicked 3 times and voila! The lights all gratifyingly came on. 1 minute later, they all went back off again, so I repeated the process several more times with no luck, only temporary flickers of light as I pulled the trigger each time. Eventually, I switched to the 'continuity' mode to check the wires. It seemed to always beep regardless of which socket I tested. All good? Moved on to trying each bulb (the worst part) and found that several bulbs I pulled and inserted into the gun's 'bulb tester' worked fine while many did not. I started to question the results and began replacing a "gun-failed" bulb with a known good bulb from elsewhere on the string. In many instances, bulbs the gun would not register as good (they wouldn't light up no matter how careful I was to make contact) would work just fine when placed back into the string elsewhere. Why did this happen? I don't know. Eventually, I was able to locate and replace a few bulbs in a few different non-lit sections, but I can't say that this product made the difference. It did give me something to do while removing and reinserting bulbs, but other than the very first "fix" I experienced (followed quickly by the repeated failure I also experienced) it's hard to say how helpful this thing is. ... show more

Makes difficult jobs easy, impossible jobs possible
I used this device to successfully troubleshoot two holiday decorations, one with four sets of 100 series bulbs, and the other with 3 sets. Each set consisted of two 50 bulb series strings, and only one or two of those were working on each decoration. Most of the sockets were tightly tie-wrapped to the metal frame, so the wires could not be spread out for tracing or testing. So I searched Amazon and found the Light Keeper Pro. It turned out to be exactly what I needed. The instructions and online videos are excellent, and I suggest watching at least a few of them before using the tool. Several of the 50 bulb strings responded to the "quick fix trigger method", which closed the shunts in the burned out bulbs so the rest could light up. So that made a difficult job easy - just replace the bulbs that didn't light up. In one string the bulbs didn't light, but I could see arcing in the bases of two bulbs when I pressed the trigger. Replacing those bulbs lit the string, revealing other bad bulbs. A few of the strings still didn't light up. Visual inspection showed that several sockets were empty and a few sockets had broken off and were missing entirely. After fixing those, several strings came on immediately or after using the trigger a few times. But there was still one group of 50 bulbs that didn't work. At that point I used the audible voltage detector. I noticed that the detector triggered on the metal frame of the decoration. After verifying that the frame was not shorted to any wires, I grounded it and voltage only showed up on the wires -- except on one string that was dark. I was able to find the exact location of the problem, where a wire had broken off on a bulb socket. (Since only one side of the plug is "hot", you may need to reverse the plug to locate breaks or bad bulbs with the voltage detector.) So finally all 700 bulbs are working; I ended up replacing more than 90 bulbs and about six sockets. After trying to find the problems using a digital voltmeter (too difficult to probe the tiny sockets) and a Greenlee voltage detector (too sensitive), the job had seemed impossible, but with this tool it went smoothly. Customers either hate or love this product
I give the Light Keeper PRO 01201 five stars because it enabled me to fix all 3 failed sections (100 light bulbs in each) in my 12-foot tall pre-lit tree. I appreciate Amazon customer reviews and found the reviews on this item very interesting: 739 with 5 stars and 159 with 1 star and a relatively few in the 2, 3, and 4 star range. Customers either hate or love this product. So I decided to take a chance and here’s my experience on the 3 bad sections I “fixed” (each had a different problem): 1) I removed a bulb in the first bad section, connected the Light Keeper Pro, pulled the trigger once, and the 100-light string lit up. This was so easy, I felt I was cheating. 2) Being amazed and overconfident, I then tried the same procedure on the second bad section, and it did not work even after pulling the trigger several times. Next, I followed the Light Keeper Pro’s second procedure to find the “bad” bulb. This device allows the user to locate where the voltage is interrupted using beeping sounds. I was able to locate, identify, and replace one bad bulb, then two bad bulbs, then three bad bulbs. It turns almost all the bulbs in that section were burned out (they were even discolored). So, I “repaired” this section by replacing it with a whole new 100-bulb string. 3) I tried the first procedure on the third bad section, but it did not work. I then used the beeping procedure to locate the one bad bulb, replaced it, and the rest of that section lit up. Confidence restored. Here’s my advice: 1) Don’t buy this product to fix strings of lights. Even if you have several bad strings, use your money to offset the cost of new very-high efficient LED strings. I replaced all my outdoor lighting with LED and they use about 8% of the power (Yes, I did measure the currents with a meter). The manufacturer of this product designed it originally to repair strings of lights on pre-lit trees. It doesn't make much sense to buy a tool costing $15 or more to fix a $10 string of lights unless it's attached to something. 2) If you’re impatient, then you better be lucky. I fixed my entire tree, and no longer have to try to hide the burned out sections against the wall. It took me about three hours (most of the time replacing the one string with a new one). If I’m so concerned about electrical efficiency, why didn't I just rewire the whole tree? Well, it’s probably about 12 100-bulb strings, and I’m not too concerned about indoor lighting in the winter because it helps heat the house (not as cost-effective as natural gas, but it’s not like heating up the outdoors). 3) I read the directions, but didn't watch the U-tube examples (They might be helpful, I just didn't bother).
