First off, unlike some review models, this one came with a 5/8" bore, just as advertised at the time I ordered it. So, no spacers for the shafts of most grinders in the 8" wheel size. This is a very heavy wheel, and you're going to need a grinder of sufficient power to start up that wheel. Almost two decades ago I tried modifying one of these CBN wheels for use on a Tormek (long before they began to offer diamond wheels) and it was a no go. Mostly because the drive puck wasn't up to starting it up, or dealing with speed variations. So If you are going to go with this wheel, make sure it is being mounted to a serious grinder--in my case an old low speed Delta. Where these shine are for establishing/changing a bevel angle on flat woodworking chisels and mild shaping and touch ups of woodturning tools made from powdered metal and other exotic alloys. If you don't have a wet grinder, these would be my wheels of choice for those purposes. That they remain flat over the entire life of the wheel, makes that especially well suited for chisels and small block plane blades of 1 inch or less. For major metal removal (hopefully rarely required) for woodturning gouges or badly damaged flat blades I still prefer a friable Norton wheel of larger grit and a slow speed grinder. You can always dress them to obtain a temporarily flat surface. For many, this will be an outstanding wheel for woodturning tool maintenance, but I must say, in my nearly 20 years of use of this style of wheel, I really don't use mine that much. I have a set of almost every tool Jerry Glaser produced, many of them coming directly from Jerry. He's no longer with us, and IMO the attempts to reproduce or update his exotic alloy designs have fallen short of the originals. I want these tools to outlast me (which is becoming more likely by the year), so I am very judicious in my methods of restoring their edge. Though I have choices, including this wheel, it is the wet grinding Tormek that is what I go to. Not everyone can justify that expense, and if that is the case, these CBN wheels, this one in particular, really shine as a quality alternative for general use. ... show more

    • Impressive! Heavy and perfectly balanced!
Style: 8 inch CBN Grinding Wheel
This grinding wheel is great! I put it on my grinder and it was perfectly balanced right out of the box. It's very heavy so it carries a lot of inertia and makes grinding a breeze! It's a little on the expensive side but I can see why, it's well made and should last a long time. Very happy with it.

I finally got a chance to use this CBN Grinding Wheel and I was really surprised! When I first looked at it I wasn't sure it would last very long, especially on cast iron. I love to powder coat in my home shop and have found that coating cast iron just doesn't leave a smooth looking finish. A few minutes to knock down the worst of the casting and then a few more minutes on a fine sanding wheel and I get professional looking results much quicker that just using several grits of sanding wheels. This is an awesome grinding wheel. It cuts extremely well and doesn't produce as much heat as the grinding stones do. It spins true and the one I received at least is well balanced and doesn't cause any vibration. I have been wanting to try one of these CBN grinding wheels and I'm glad I finally got one.     • Precision machined steel wheel, comes with narrow plastic bushings
Style: 6 inch CBN Grinding Wheel
I like the heft of this CBN wheel, a precision machined steel base coated with CBN grains on the 1” wide perimeter face and 1/4” on the sides. It cuts fast and cool, and the diameter never changes so I always get the same grind, unlike a stone wheel that gradually gets smaller in diameter. There are disadvantages compared to a quality stone wheel however: 1) a properly mounted and dressed stone wheel runs true and cuts fast; this CBN wheel cannot be adjusted or dressed, and will gradually become less effective as it wears. 2) the shoulder profile of a stone wheel can be dressed square or with whatever radius is required. 3) the plastic bushings included with this CBN wheel are junk- too narrow and negates the precision of the machined steel wheel. ... show more

This wheel is heavy and sturdy. Even at a very slow speed it removes metal. The 1 inch width is great. It’s seems very well balanced and I don’t see any runout with my eyes and for grinding steel lathe bits I don’t think it would matter. I gave it to my husband, he was so…so happy to receive it. He is 82 yrs. Old and still turn’s wood on his lathe. Finally hie has something to sharpen his lathe tools and it does it perfectly .
