  • Old version was almost perfect; new version depends on graphics card
I loved my LG Gram but the “e” key broke off after 5 years. I tried to but a nearly identical newer version. It was great but Citrix didn’t work with it. After some Googling, realized it was a conflict between the Intel Arc graphics card and Citrix. Intel recommends upgrading the software, but when I started to do that I got a warning about how I should only use LG’s updates. But LG has no update. I bought another nearly identical version from another retailer. This one has the Intel Iris Xe graphics card, and Citrix seems to work great. I’m going to have to return the one I bought here. Both newer versions have higher pitched, annoying fans, but the one with the Iris Xe graphics card doesn’t run nearly as often. Below is my review for the 2019 version, which I think had no graphics card: I use this laptop to browse the web, use Microsoft applications and access my office computer through Citrix. The screen feels huge compared to my old ultraportable, which had a 13" screen. This one has a 17" but feels even lighter! I can easily use one hand to move it off my lap to another surface. The keyboard is a little flatter than I'm used to, and there is more real estate devoted to the track pad than I think is necessary, so I feel like I am reaching over it to get to the keyboard. I also wish there were full-sized PgUp/Dn and Home/End keys, instead of these half-sized ones that I need to use with the Function key. Those minor complaints aside, I am blown away. Unlike my old Lenovo, this computer starts up quickly, connects to the internet quickly, seems to work great, and again, has that huge screen despite being very lightweight. It actually fits in the case I bought for my old 13" laptop (although barely); because the bevel around the screen is so slim, it's not as much bigger/wider as you'd think for the much larger screen. It and my slim case fit in the rolling bag that I travel with, which is a smaller one designed to fit under most seats and avoid the dreaded "you have to check that" instruction from the flight attendants. Because gamers are a big part of the market for high end laptops these days, reviews focus on the lack of a GPU. I haven't noticed an issue for any of my uses. Also, I haven't used it on battery power often, but when I did I found that the battery seemed to last quite a bit longer than previous laptops. I can't say whether the reported time is accurate, but it definitely seems to have a long-lasting battery. Update: the half-sized PgUp/Dn keys drive me nuts. But the fingerprint reader makes logging on fast and easy. Also, I've started using the built-in microphone with Dragon NaturallySpeaking (both locally and through Citrix) and the built-in microphone is surprisingly good. Not as good as a top-rated microphone, but accurate enough that it doesn't feel worth setting up or attaching an external microphone or headset. Using the built-in microphone is so convenient when I'm not at my desk! ... show more

  • Amazingly light and great screen size and sharpness
I have had a lot of laptops in my life, for which I have paid $1k to $10k. This approx $2k LG Gram 17” is a wonder of engineering and a true pleasure to use. It boots blazingly fast. The fingerprint reader is the best I have seen and it is nearly instant. The speed of the computer overall is fast (though I did immediately upgrade the RAM to 32GB, even though it seemed ok before without it), the screen is a delight, and the lightness of the weight is just phenomenal. It’s so light it is lighter than my last 13” ultraportable. Even the adapter is small and light. It beats everything else I have touched and looked at by a good measure. As a geek who loves tech I change laptop practically every few months and have tried dozens and dozens of them just in the past few years. The only constructive criticism I would have is a hope for a regular size keyboard, since there is room. But It’s a minor comment. I love everything else. ... show more

  • This is not a gaming laptop
This is not a gaming laptop and that is why I bought it. My old laptop a dell precision is getting tire and is too much for me to carry with my bad back. The power brick for it alone weighs more than the shipping weight of this laptop. Really it is lighter than my ipad. I saw the Gram on Linus Tech Tips and knew it was what I was looking for. It is the only one that had everything I need and nothing I don't. I don't play games or any heavy graphics so I don't need expensive power hungry gpu and other gaming features but I do need a 17" high res screen, full size backlit keyboard, ports that don't need dongles, a fast cpu, a lot of ram and fast storage in the smallest most rugged package I can get and this is the only one that met my all those needs. I tried speccing laptops from all the major brands and any that came close were twice the price. I am very happy. Business users like me that need the power and portability without resorting to a gaming rig or a mobile workstation and the gram is the only one I have found meeting that need. It feels nice, looks nice, for having no vents it barely gets warm under a heavy load. Only points I would subtract is no hardware raid options for the drives but a little playing around in disk management I got it close to what I want. Edit: After 5 months I have to be honest and take a star off. The trackpad uses the generic windows 10 driver which leaves a bit to be desired. It also kind of flimsy and the left click sometimes sticks. Also the app I have open most of the time has burned into the screen. It is only noticeable if there is a dark background but it is there. These are minor annoyances overall and far from a deal breaker. It is otherwise very rugged and the battery life is great. I have actively used it on battery over 7 hours and still had 30% left. I found out it does have a cooling fan but it is so quiet you don't hear it and it vents out the back under the screen. Even under heavy load of multiple virtual machines it only gets warm to the touch and I have not noticed any throttling. ... show more
