Living in the dry Midwest, I decided it was time to replace my old Levoit ultrasonic humidifier after discovering mold and learning about potential lung hazards from water particles. This led me to explore safer options. I was only considering Levoit or a German brand, as other brands are ugly-looking, in my opinion. I settled on the Levoit Superior 6000S, their first evaporative humidifier. Not only was it more affordable than its German counterpart (priced at $249 versus $500+), but my positive experience with Levoit's air purifier also played a role in my decision. ***First Impressions: Stylish Exterior, Underwhelming Interior The humidifier boasts a sleek, modern design, fitting well in any room. However, the internal components, particularly the fan, feel cheap. It reminds me of something you'd find at a budget store. ***Setup and Operation: Simple Yet Effective The setup is straightforward. The system pumps water from a reservoir to the top, where it trickles down through filters. As air passes through these moist filters, it picks up moisture and is then expelled, humidifying the room. The process is essentially middle school physics, but it's impressively efficient. ***Performance: Exceeds Expectations I heard that evaporative humidifiers require a longer time to improve humidity compared with ultrasonic ones. I tested it in my 500 sqft apartment (though it's rated for 3000 sqft) and was amazed. The humidifier increased humidity from 27% to 50% in under two hours, even with a window open. At its lowest setting, it's quite enough. Even if I put it 5 feet from my bed, I can still go to sleep, and it maintains the humidity at 50% at its lowest fan speed easily. (Note: with my bedroom door closed. My bedroom is probably around 300 sqft.) ***Areas for Improvement *Water Refilling: The included plastic tube works well with tall faucets but struggles with standard bathroom sinks, leading to bending and restricted water flow. *Maintenance and Cleaning: The long, curved water tube connecting the reservoir and the top part could pose cleaning challenges similar to what one might encounter with a fish tank. However, the unit's design minimizes hard-to-clean corners and edges, making it generally easier to maintain than traditional humidifiers. I plan to use a bleach-infused cleaner for effective cleaning and disinfection. ***Final Thoughts on the Levoit Superior S6000 So, after giving this humidifier a whirl for a day, I've got to say, I'm pretty happy with it. It does what it's supposed to do without any fuss, and for that, it gets my thumbs up. But I won't lie – the build and the basic mechanism kind of make me question the price tag. Is it really worth what I paid? I'm on the fence about that. Stay tuned, though. If anything big pops up, either good or bad, in how this thing works or what it's like keeping it clean, I'll be sure to drop an update.     • Best Evaporative Humidifier. Beats the Aircare humidifiers

Finally an option for a high quality humidifier that will last. My old humidifier, the Aircare console, at the time was really the only option for an effective humidifier, but had so many issues. After only 2 weeks of owning it, the screen started showing the "EE" error code and would restart the fan over and over. They did send a replacement, however that one had the exact same issue a few months later and would happen off and on. The build quality wasn't great either, and felt very flimsy. But when it worked, it was really effective, boosted the humidity in my apartment from 20% to 50% in about an hour and sustained it well. The 6000s' design and build feels much higher quality than the other options and it's extremely effective. My entire apartment went from 15% to 55% humidity in 45 minutes, and sustains that level more efficiently it seems. The noise level is also MUCH quieter on the 6000s than any other humidifier I've tried. The app is also really good, and gives alot of control. You have alot control over fan speed and humidity targets than other options as well. The design of the water tub is also very simple and easy to clean, compared to the aircare. Overall it seems to be the best option for an evaporative humidifier and by far the highest quality. Will have to see the lifespan of the filters though. I bought this humidifier after reading a review on Wirecutter, and for the most part, it ticks all the boxes! It billows out an impressive cloud of mist that easily humidifies a large room. It’s super quiet and the sleep function allows you to turn off the lights at night, which makes it ideal for a bedroom. I also really like the aromatherapy pad, and am quite partial to the soothing scent of lavender as I drift off to sleep. But boy was Wirecutter wrong to say this thing is easy to clean. You have to break the machine down to a dozen parts just for a basic hose down (every week or so, lest you wish for a mysteriously phlegmy hacking cough). And then there are plenty of hard-to-reach spots that get particularly grimey. The supplied cleaning brush is a flimsy joke (see attached photo), but I guess it’s easily replaceable with an old toothbrush. Overall it takes 20-30 mins for the weekly clean. Is it worth it? I can’t say, honestly. But I’m sticking to it until designers develop suitable self-cleaning technology for the deluxe upgrade (soon, hopefully!). ... show more

I saw this top-rated on WireCutter, and its smaller sister 300S highly rated by CR, but was astonished at just how good it is. It's incredibly small given its 750 sq. ft. room capacity, and is whisper quiet. The tank is extremely easy to remove and fill, and is easy to clean. It does both warm and cool mist, and you can specify the degree of each using either the controls on the front panel, or - even more simply - with the phone app (which is a marvel of user simplicity).
