  • Great value for a powerful cheap laptop
I wanted a cheap laptop for writing and web surfing, perhaps some netflix viewing. No gaming. This is awesome. My favorite element is the startup time - from pressing the power button to being able to surf or type is somewhere in the region of 5 seconds, it's more like turning on a tv than powering up a computer. The screen is very nice. No touch screen but that's OK. The keyboard is the main reason I got this - it's a nice size and pretty high quality for actual writing. The plastic case itself is only ok. There were very sharp edges which really hurt my hands and in the end I got some find sandpaper and actually sanded down the plastic edges. Overall, very pleased. ... show more

  • It's not bad but it's not a thinkpad.
The around 500 dollars you'll spend for this (I think I paid about 450) is not a bad price at all. For the money it's an outstanding laptop. Just, for a few hundred more you can pick up an E14 Thinkpad with a Ryzen 7 that is a MUCH better deal, and three times the laptop. You literally go from a keyboard that's a half decent clone of a macbook keyboard, to literally the best keyboard currently on any laptop sold. The E14 has the best version of the older thinkpad keyboard. It's better than the S14 or even Carbon X1 keyboard. So right away if you are looking at this laptop, go look at the prices on the Thinkpad E14 on Levono's site first. Just saying. That being said, the main thing that makes this laptop so amazing is that AMD processor. What boggled my mind was this sub 500 dollar "student laptop" was performing as well as my 1300 dollar work laptop, which is a T14S with Intel's best mobile processor. Huh. How is a 500 dollar laptop doing that? So I start researching and I find out that AMD's mid range mobile processors are as good as Intel's best at the moment. Apparently Intel can't get their FAB size down so AMD's cheap mobile processors are faster and more efficient. The real question is why are they cheaper? The AMD versions of the Thinkpads are about hundred bucks less. That's how I found my current favorite laptop of all time, the E14 with Ryzen 7. Which right now is about 700 bucks (add your own ram, change the drive like I did). Now, what really blew my mind about this laptop was I originally bought it because I play space sims and I have a joystick and throttle setup, and an ultra-wide monitor, and I loved the idea of getting a VESA arm and having a laptop right next to me so I can do things like search for game missions or use website tools, or (if you can dig this) just play music for me like the laptop on my space ship would while I'm doing something like bounty hunting or asteroid mining. And I'd put Fedora Linux on it. Redhat loves Lenovo, so Fedora always works flawlessly on lenovo hardware. What I wasn't expecting was the VEGA graphics cores. I wasn't expecting Steam to work fantastic. I wasn't expecting War Thunder to play at medium settings over 100 frames per second. I wasn't expecting Elite Dangerous to play on HIGH settings with great frame rates. This little thing is amazing with both Linux and Gaming. No, it's not going to run your VR headset, and no, it's not going to have blazing graphics performance. I'd say it's about equal to an RX480 or maybe a 1050 ti, but that's pretty freaking amazing on a cheap laptop. Now, what's really amazing is when you are gaming for six hours with a cheap laptop, and suddenly it all dies on you and that's because it has been on battery the whole time. That's a wow moment. The processor barely pulls 20 watts. So the battery lasts forever even when pushed hard. The keyboard isn't a thinkpad keyboard but it's still good in that compromise way macbook keyboards are good. The short travel chicklet thing. It's not the kind of thing where you can just type for eight solid hours and enjoy all of it like a thinkpad keyboard. What this laptop did do was make me want more of this good thing. That's how I found the E14 Ryzen 7 model. And again, this is a great laptop but if you can pay 200 dollars more and get three times the laptop, do it. Maybe it was just a sale, but for 200 dollars you get 40 percent more VEGA graphics, and about double the processor and even more efficiency, on top of the current best keyboard you can have on any laptop. I wish you could get the E14 keyboard on the S14. Make a note if you read this Lenovo. But again, it's just so hard to find fault with an amazing little laptop that plays games so well for only 500 bucks. But the E14 is so much better that even if this was 350 bucks, I'd say get the thinkpad. If you are buying this for a college age kid, DEFINITELY get the thinkpad instead. That being said, I'm giving this laptop to a family member and I know they will love it. I took a star off for the screen. It's not bad, but they could use the slightly better one at this price. It's not great in sunlight. Hope this helps ... show more
