  • Best compact camera ever
Color: Silver
I finally mustered up the courage to buy this as a more manageably-sized complement to my full frame DSLR (a Pentax K-1): I didn’t want to lug around a big rig as often, and wanted to see just how far this would take me. Let me just say that it really is an incredible camera: all the other reviewers aren’t exaggerating. AF is crazy fast and accurate, controls are simple and intuitive, the EVF and back screen are bright and smooth, and the lens is simply spectacular: it’s the sharpest lens I’ve ever shot wide open, by a LOT, and I’ve tried many fast primes in my day. I mean really—the images it produces are fantastic, with a distinct crispness and pop that I can easily pick out vs other lenses and brands. It’s also just gorgeously built (I got the silver anodized version). This has now become my general purpose, walkaround camera: great for family, travel, weekend outings, etc...macro mode is also pretty nifty. It still won’t replace my DSLR for serious landscape work, particularly on a tripod, in the elements, or if filters are needed, but that’s not why I bought it. It’s taken its place as my go to camera, which is what I intended it for. Going into it, I had a concern 24 megapixels wouldn’t be enough but that’s been completely unfounded: I haven’t ever missed the extra pixels. My only minor complaints are 1) the battery life isn’t stellar, but it’s not bad either, and 2) pushing shadows too much in post will sometimes result in noticeable banding. But again, both of those are very minor. Bottom line, I HIGHLY recommend this camera, and wish I’d bought it much much sooner. ... show more

  • The Leica Q - what the future could be like!
Color: Silver
Great ergonomics, Fast focus, An astoundingly sharp lens! Well executed in just about every way. The technology infused, modernized Leica for the future. I own/have owned a lot of very nice cameras, all very good tools for different kinds of work. The Leica Q design has managed to capture and integrate so many features into a camera that you can pick it up - put to your eye and concentrate on what it's all about - making photographs. Its my constant companion wherever I go, I love everything about it - its fast, its solidly built and allows me to make wonderful images. Its great for travel, for street and even for some landscape photography. Some take issue with a fixed 28mm focal length lens , all I can say that's not necessarily a detractor because you will be forced to physically change your distance. Interact with what is in front of the lens, force you to work your composition. I am an advocate of the great Magnum Photographer Robert Capa's famous quote: "If your photographs aren't good enough, you're not close enough. ” Yes, its expensive, and some people may say its just arm candy for uppity photographers with a need to impress. I think if you try it, you will be roundly impressed - it *really is* a photographers camera! ... show more

  • Buyer beware - Expensive camera with no real warranty from Leica.
Color: Silver
An amazing camera while it worked. However, less than 1 year after ownership it started making a clucking sound and began to malfunction. I had to take the battery out to restart it, which worked for a few photos until it totally shut down. I have had an abysmal experience with Leica customer service. They have "fixed" my camera twice and after each "fix" the camera worked for a day or two and then repeated the same malfunction. Leica acknowledged that my lense is defective in writing when I first sent it for repairs. After the second time I sent it they again acknowledged the defect but also said their were signs of wear and tear on the camera. After I returned it to Leica a third time for repair and demanded a replacement for my defective product, they claimed I damaged the camera, which was false. After a series of escalating complaints, they told me they would fix it for $800 despite having a 2 year warranty. Having no other viable options for a $4200 camera, I reluctantly agreed. I'm still waiting for my camera. I have owned in for a year and 2 months. I have only been able to use it for 8 months. HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT. Unless money is not a factor for you, I would strongly recommend looking at other options to avoid being in my situation. • Reportage? This is IT! Reportage? This is IT!
Color: Silver
I imagine if you're seriously interested in the Leica Q, you've already read lengthy reviews and are now trying to justify the purchase, or at the very least convince yourself this camera is what you've been looking for. If you haven't done your research yet, I suggest you Google Overgaard Leica Q Hemingway and then come back. In this review, I just want to point out the biggest things I like and don't like about the camera. Most of the time I post process in Lightroom and then upload to Google Photos where I'm looking at the pictures on my phone. Also not much of a pixel-peeper (meaning I don't zoom in to see if my face pores came out sharp). About me I mainly shoot photos of my family and landscape. Not much street, but from time to time I'll take a few shots. I'm in my early 30s and have a 1.5 yr old at the time of this review, so I just want to capture family moments. My personal 2018 theme (kinda like a new year's resolution) is to capture the moment. I appreciate the quality that dedicated cameras offer and get annoyed when people say it's the same as their smartphone. I take plenty of pictures with my phone, but c'mon, it's not even close to a real camera. Hope that gives you an idea of one type of Leica Q owner. Other gear includes an Olympus E-M5 and E-M1 II with a 12mm, 14mm, 20mm, 25mm and 45mm. Things me likey -Not gonna lie, there's a certain sense of joy and pride that comes from owning a Leica to me. It's superficial, I know, but it's there. -The Leica pop/look is something that I've read about and never believed. Every now and then I saw some pictures that had a little something special in the Leica forums and review sites. Then I thought there was a bit of truth to it, but it came down to the photographer and post processing. Now that I have a Leica I can confirm that some pictures (not all) have a bit of pizzaz that my E-M1 II doesn't and won't. It's strange, it feels and looks more real rather than slightly flat. Its not sharpness, but it's about how the colors, highlights, shadows, etc. are rendered. -Because some pictures have that "Leica" look, there's this happiness of knowing you took a great picture. But you know what, I'm probably just drinking that Leica kool-aid. Still, that feeling is there and that is worth something. -The 28mm is superb and the manual adjustments on the lens (aperture, focus, macro) are fun to use. I like 28mm, it suits my shooting style. I don't understand those complaining about it not being a 35mm or 50mm. The product is what it is, and if it's not for you then look elsewhere. I don't leave a complaint on a Canon 5D about its bulkiness; I don't even consider it given it's not what I'm looking for. -It's comfortable and ergonomic. Holding it for long periods of time is no issue. My thumb goes over the thumb rest, index over the shutter, middle/ring on the front and pinky on the bottom. -Less is more. To some degree I miss the 5 custom Fn buttons on my E-M1, but it's also really fun yet challenging to use a "minimalistic" camera. Don't get me wrong, this is by no means a point-and-shoot, but you also don't have the luxury of having Fn buttons assigned to white balance, AEL/AFL, focus peaking, DOF Preview, ISO, AND switch multi/single point AF. That's what my E-M1 can do. So you're a bit more limited to some degree, and you've got to work with what you've got (although you've got quite a lot in this camera). -I can give this to my wife who doesn't know photography as well and she can take great pictures. If I give her the E-M1, she's intimidated given its complexity. -Bottomline, it's really fun to shoot and more fun to look at the pictures captured. Would I be able to justify this purchase if I couldn't pay in cash? No. If I had to save for an entire year in order to afford it? No. If I have the money to spend and I'm going to enjoy the camera more than miss the $4k? Absolutely. No likey -The textured material that covers the body feels cheap and not grippy at all. Can't tell if it's plastic or something else but I'm not a big fan. I might buy a leather half case like the Arte Di Mano. -Camera strap included is trash, I bought a Rock n Roll M10 Limited Edition strap. Other comments -The EVF - people say it's the most amazing thing in the world. Honestly, it's great but I thought it would appear bigger. Didn't quite meet expectations there. -There's a good chance that the Q2 will be released in the next 2-3 years. I can live with that given it's a very capable camera. -I have the silver version and it looks fantastic. I like the retro look though. -You will need spare batteries and the Panasonic DMW-BLC12 works fine. You can pop them in the Leica charger and the battery bars appear in the camera. -Some reviewers will point to the fact that you can buy a Fuji X-T2 + a bunch of lenses and still have money left. To me, the money is irrelevant; it's about what the camera offers and the value I see in its capabilities. -As you research, you will find people who hate on Leica, those that swear by it, and those that can't tell a difference. In my readings, very few who have owned a Leica hate it or speak ill about it. But you can find anything you want that will guide you one way or another. Go back to basics - what are you going to use this camera for? The lens is plenty sharp, pictures look amazing, the colors are rendered well, the ergonomics are well designed, the tech is up to date, it is very well built (in Germany no less), looks fantastic, and you own a product that captures the essence of photography. What more do you want? Final word - I haven't owned a lot of camera in my life but this is my favorite so far for the reasons above. It's not for everyone, but for those who are looking into a reportage camera, this is it. It's a tough one to pull trigger, but once you do you'll never regret it. ... show more
