  • The mech
Style: FrustrationFree Packaging
The set was outstanding and enjoyable for kids ages 10 and up. One thing is that the head was given 360-degree movement which is dumb. Overall, this is a great set, my son built it in around 4-5 hours. So, I gave it 5 stars.

  • Very impressed!

This is a great set, especially, for older children. Might be a bit too big to play with if under 10-11 years of age.

  • Excellent Mecha Set.
Style: FrustrationFree Packaging
So, usually I go over a lot of details and compare the set to Lego Brand (as it's the gold standard in a lot of regards). This time, we'll gloss over some of the details - the packaging is the usual high standard, the parts are all excellent quality, etc. The set is spread out over 8 numbered bags. Also? I am not a Ninjago content expert. I am, however, a major fan of mecha and Lego mecha in particular, so I'll be looking at this from that angle. The set comes with 8 minifigs, 1 'bigger than a minifig' monster, and the Samurai Mech itself. It also includes what I am told is a full set of the golden weapons. The minifigs are all very well detailed and are of interesting overall design. The bad guys side has one of the more interesting design choices with all of the trans-clear pink elements, including body parts. The first bag consists of several of the minifigs and the monster build. The monster is a fairly simple but very well designed thing that features a good range of movement and really smart parts choices. The remaining seven bags are the mecha itself (and a few more figs). The mech is not horribly complex or difficult to build, but it is very detailed and smartly designed. It features working joints at the neck, ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, elbows, wrists, and pauldrons (shoulder armor). The only 'action feature' is a pair of missile launchers in the pauldrons, but with the amount of flexibility that the mech itself has it could just be regarded as one gigantic action feature. Hidden within the mech is a cockpit, accessible from under the head. It's not a highly detailed element, but it is also hidden, so that is perfectly fine. All told, it's a satisfying build and will be both a fun toy for the kids *and* is a very nice display mecha for those of us who are a bit bigger. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Mech can hold up to play
Style: FrustrationFree Packaging
Nya’s Samurai X Mech is a big, sturdy mech that can stand up to playing and posing. The finished build has articulated knees! The knee pieces in particular look very cool on the finished build. I always enjoy when Lego set designers find a new way to reuse old pieces, and here the knees are repurposed from cockpit windows. Pretty cool. The back of the mech looks neat too, especially the gold spine. The offset gold ingot pieces give me real exoskeleton vibes. The back almost makes up for the head and feet. I feel the head could use more detail -- it’s small compared to the rest of the mech. The feet can’t move in all directions, which improves the mech’s stability but takes away a few posing options. So the feet are a trade off. The crystal beast side build might actually be my favorite part of the set. The new translucent pink crystal pieces look so cool with the dark grey. The beast just pops! I wish the crystal beast was bigger, since it doesn’t match the immense size of the mech. Pitting them against each other isn’t as fun as it could be. The set includes eight minifigures, with several exclusive to this set: Samurai X Nya, Master Wu, Lil’ Nelson, Oni Garmadon, The Mechanic, and General Pythor. The other two are Golden Jay and Vengestone Warrior. Ironically, the Vengestone Warrior is my favorite, I’m really liking the Crystalized theme for season 15. The mech is big and there are eight minifigs, but I still think this set is priced too high. ... show more

  • Cool Stylized Mech with a Flimsy head and great mini figs
Style: FrustrationFree Packaging
I build a lot of Lego, but I haven’t done any of the Ninjago Mechs until now. I’m not super familiar with the source material either, I just like the occasional Ninjago set. Overall this build is fun. I must say I love a lot of the design choices below the neck… I want to rework the entire head. It just doesn’t read well. It very vaguely resembles a face/head. The neck joint is flimsy and doesn’t provide enough support either. I put it on my Robotics/Mech shelf and it really doesn’t stand out, because it doesn’t look like it’s head is complete. Surprisingly the enemy side build had that incomplete head feeling going as well. The minifig selection is quite good, and one of the inspirations for grabbing the set. I’m not really even a big fan of minifigs, but the Dragon, Serpent and Oni figs were too well done to pass on. Overall this set just needs a head and neck redesign to be a real winner, but aside from that I love just about everything else. ... show more
