  • A really cool LEGO build, especially for fans of Toy Story
This is such a cool set, I'm so happy I was offered this! I'm a huge fan of the Toy Story, and I think anyone who is a fan of the series would love to be gifted this or to get it for themselves. What I love the most is how similar it looks to the aliens from the actual movies. Sometimes with LEGO sets, it can look similar to movies, but it's blocky somewhere. Not this set, this is really really cook in that it looks like the little green aliens from the movies. The LEGO instructions, of course, are always so easy to follow. It made the build so fun! But what I liked the best was the product you ended up with afterwards. You insert the coin and the whole "toy" actually moves! I think a smaller child (that you help them build it) would enjoy just having it in their room to play with. I love that a build from the Toy Story movies actually turns into a toy. :) There were no missing parts for me, and the whole family had fun putting it together. Our family is massively into LEGO, I think we have collected boxes and boxes throughout the years, especially all the Star Wars series. We always look forward to what else LEGO offers to build, and we are never disappointed with the imagination of LEGO these days. I highly recommend this, it was a joy to build. ... show more

  • Low challenge, reasonable value, but a couple quality shortcomings
This is generally a very good set. LEGO is widely regarded as an especially high quality brand, however, and my set fell short of expectations in that regard. Aside from that shortcoming, I have plenty of compliments for this one. The pieces are, unsurprisingly, LEGO-compatible size and have their typical easy-building, moderate clutch power. Most of the colors are very good, but the color consistency of the dark purple pieces is poor and I noticed some subtle variations among the white pieces as well. There are both printed pieces and stickers. The lime green print on one of my alien's eyes looks slightly pale to me, but it's not bad and the other printed pieces are satisfactory. I'm happy with the appearance of the sticker for the rocket's viewscreen and controls. The other stickers are just OK. The biggest issue is that their background colors aren't a good match for the pieces. Stickers with a white background contrast too much against the more cream-colored white of the pieces, while the blue background of the ringed planet sticker is a darker blue than the alien's torso. The "Insert Coin" sticker looks good enough to me, but comparison with the image in the instructions shows the black ink was not aligned with the other colors in the manner the design intended. Set design is appropriate to its ages 9+ indication. I would rate the challenge level of this set as low to very low. I used the app-based instructions and there were only a few spots where I needed to pay much attention to what I was doing. You can definitely zone out and go with the flow while building this set, if that's your preference. The alien and the rocket have separate printed instruction booklets and both have three parts bags, so it's a pretty equal division of labor if two builders are splitting the build. The build techniques in the alien reminded me of BrickHeadz-style figures with just a few Technic elements for basic posing. The Technic elements in the rocket are also rather minimal - its mechanism is very basic, but satisfyingly smooth. The biggest highlight for me is that there are many new and very recent shapes of pieces included in this set. It may be a little bit attractive to MOC builders for that reason, although those pieces mainly appear in red and lime colors. I have to wonder a little bit about who is the intended audience for this set. Since Toy Story 5 is not out yet, it's hard to guess whether or not the alien will appeal to young builders, but I notice they're absent from that movie's promotional poster. As an older builder, even though I love building spaceships and rockets, I feel like a more fun and nostalgic choice would have been a mechanical claw. In any case, I appreciate that this set is a fairly reasonable value - even with no minifigures, $59.99 for a Disney-licensed set with 714 pieces feels better than many other LEGO sets. ... show more
