This substrate is perfect for my indoor tortoise table. One block easily filled two 40 x 20 inch tortoise tables to a depth of 4-6 inches. Since I was using this for desert tortoises, I did not want it to be too wet. I found that hydrating it with about half the recommended water (about 2 gallons total) puffed up and softened the substrate without making it too wet. The coconut fiber is easy for my tortoises to walk on and burrow into and it does not stick to them at all. It is easy to clean, absorbent and smells good.     • An Absolutely Massive Brick of Coconut Bark

While I was expecting the chips to be a little finer, I am not disappointed with the volume. The brick itself was quite large and hefty, but it expanded to at least 3 or 4x the original size when soaked in water. It way over filled a 5 gallon bucket. The substrate holds water quite well, but does not hold a burrow like soil or coconut fiber does. This is great for tropical and subtropical reptiles, and it is quite easy to remove droppings and clean. I personally used it for a corn snake, and while I prefer substrates that allow him to burrow, I am satisfied with what I got. For the amount of mulch you get, this is a pretty great deal and I would recommend it to anyone looking to fill up a medium sized reptile enclosure. ... show more

I really like this substrate. The texture is great, and it holds moisture well without feeling like it stays too wet. I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect substrate, especially now that my snake is getting bigger and older. He’s getting fussy but he really likes this one! It’s got enough texture that it aids well in his shedding, but not so much that it’s uncomfortable for him. he spends a lot of time out on it, so I imagine he must be happy enough. Side note, it’s super convenient to ship and store because of the compressed bag so that’s a big help too! ... show more

is A LOT. If this is your first time getting a pack like this, just know that once you get it out and add water, it will expand A LOT. I actually used my wheelbarrow since I already knew it would be so much. Not sure what else I could even fit it in, tbh, I had gotten some similar substrate for a small garden area before, so I was aware it would expand like that but this is what I will be using for my red eared slider instead. Basically since you get a ton it will last forever. They need different areas they can dig in if they are gravid, to lay the non fertilized egg(s) under and this works out perfectly. Would also work for other reptiles and amphibians as well, and again, you get a ton. Even when my amphibian is not gravid, I think it will actually be really nice to have on the dock to lay on and stuff. Just to poke around in and keep entertained. :) Great size, good filler, and the quantity is enormous lol. Good price too, I paid more for the other pack from the red bulls eye store. ... show more

This is definitely worth the price. If you have a huge enclosure this is perfect! If you have a small enclosure this is perfect! No matter what, there is more than enough to use and save with this. I don't have any reptiles to help me out with my review, but I do have quite a few happy plants! I mix my own potting mix for aroids, and this stuff goes a long way. It keeps the mix light and airy and chunky, all while helping to hold water and keep my plants hydrated. Once you become comfortable making your own plant mix and you see how well your plants respond, I doubt you will want to go back to regular bagged potting soil. I purchased this for mixing with my coco coir, and other biodegradable material for my composting toilets at camp. I've found it's better to have several different sizes of material. Very dust peat moss will clog the vent fan screen, Larger pieces help aerate the compost. I'll mix this in and see how it does. It is very similar to the coco coir blocks, but it does allow water inside the block faster. You can break the block apart with your hands. That's not very easy with the ground up material. This probably was about 8-10 gallons of chips when water was added. ... show more
