  • THIS COMPANY STANDS BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT!
Color: Blue
SUMMARY: I bought this product. It failed. They replaced it free of charge or hassle. MY ACTUAL EXPERIENCE: Many years ago my experience with different pet lights verified some negative reviews mentioning these lights sometimes turned themselves off. I wanted our recently acquired dog to wear two lights in case one turned itself off. JANUARY 7, 2020: For $12 I ordered a pack of 6 "Clip-On Pet, Dog Collar LED Light" which included a spare battery for each light, which meant each light and spare battery cost me $2. I was concerned about negative reviews expressing concerns over the clasp breaking and the light being lost, so for $6 I also ordered the Nite Ize SpotLit Carabiner Light - Disc-O Select to make sure my dog carried a reliable second “backup “ light in case the other light broke off or turned itself off. Both products arrived in two days. MARCH 13, 2020: The $6 and “dependable” backup Nite Ize SpotLit Carabiner Light stopped working while on a walk. Luckily the $2 light continued to work. The Nite Ize SpotLit Light batteries are supposed to last for 20 hours. I roughly estimated we had only used the lights for about 10 hours but had no way of knowing for sure it had not been 20 hours. However, some Nite Ize SpotLit Light owners had posted they had experienced early battery failure. MARCH 16, 2020: For $4 I ordered a pack of 10 CR2016 replacement batteries because I expected to have the $6 Nite Ize SpotLit Light for a long time and would need the additional batteries. I was disappointed to discover it was not a battery problem. The light failed to turn on with any combination of new batteries and the return date of February 8 had long passed. On the Niteize.com website their guarantee states, “…Please know that we stand behind our products 100%. If you are not satisfied with your purchase, don't worry, we've got you covered - simply give us a call for a repair, replacement, or exchange. Although we strive to use the highest quality materials and craftsmanship, some products will eventually wear out. If you have any Nite Ize product that has stopped performing before its reasonable lifetime (not due to misuse or neglect), please give us a call and we promise to make it right…” MARCH 29, 2020: I filled out the online form below their guarantee sharing my experience without directly asking for a replacement. APRIL 1, 2020: I received an email from Nite Ize stating”… We will always stand behind our products if a customer experiences an issue or would like a replacement item under our warranty policy… You can expect to receive your replacement within one to two weeks….” APRIL 7, 2020: The replacement arrived. CONCLUSION: Nite Ize does stand behind their product and, as a result, I am giving them a 5 star rating. MY PERSONAL OBSERVATIONS: The $2 light continued to work but started to get dimmer. The lights are clipped on a harness I use only at night so I don’t have to clip the lights on and off for night walks and our dog doesn’t have them flopping around the majority of time when we are not on a night time walk. However, on one occasion during the day I had to use the harness. At the end of our walk the first $2 light I was still using was gone. I assumed the clasp had broken as reported in some reviews. I should note my dog often squeezes under fences and through brush and other tight spots as she continues her eternal search for other critters. Unfortunately, the $2 lights are no longer available so I could not compare how they would respond if I reported a defective light so I would have to rate their customer service as zero stars- but of course you cannot rate a company that no longer exists! The Nite Ize SpotLit Light is manufactured in Boulder Colorado and uses two CR2016 batteries. I have no idea where the $2 lights are manufactured but they use one CR2032 battery. These lights appeared slightly brighter. As reported in the reviews, these lights are more difficult to turn on or off the colder they are. Our night walks were always in sub-freezing temperatures and both lights were equally difficult to turn off on our return Nite Ize pet lights have thousands of ratings indicating they have been around a long time. When a company is manufacturing 10’s of thousands of a product there will always be defective units. This company does stand behind their products. The competing pet light companies do not have thousands of ratings. In fact, today (April 7, 2020) when I looked at the competing clip-on lights, the number of reviewers they were as follows: 8, 255, 9, 3, 11, 11, 2, 0, & 9. There can be a myriad of reasons for low numbers of reviews but it always makes me wary. Especially when the product names and descriptions seem to match what is usually listed. For example, today when I reviewed all the “LED Clip-on pet lights” it looked like what I recall looking at not only in January, but also many years ago when I was looking for pet lights. Yet only Nite Ize has thousands of reviews. Draw your own conclusions. ... show more

  • Excellent Functionality, Sub-Optimal Longevity Under Some Conditions
Color: Blue
First a social psychology anecdote related to my family's use of this product. We started wearing these clip-on LED's (about the size of a quarter and 1/4-inch thick) for nighttime walks around our pitch-black neighborhood. We were the only moving, blinking clump of barely discernible people around. After about 2 weeks, probably because the safety value of these lights is a no-brainer, suddenly other clumps began appearing everywhere. Even in foggy weather these small, light, cheaply powered lights are easily visible in both constant and blinking mode, and as such, the NiteIze LED light has tremendous value for keeping people and pets safe. Additionally, they are easy to use and fun, and come in at least three colors that I know of. At $5-$7 dollars each, they're a good investment if you enjoy walking around at night and don't want to worry about being hit by a car, as is the case where I live, in an unlit subdivision neighborhood in upstate New York. These lights are little more than a bright LED "bulb," sitting on a hearing-aid-type battery, encased in rubberized plastic housing, where on side is a spring switch, the middle holds the battery, and the other side holds the bulb, but they do their job well. I'll explain in a minute why they merit only 4 stars. Operation: To turn them on to shine constantly, press hard once on the button. To have them blink, press down a second time. To shut them off, press down yet again. Maintenance: I've been using my light on and off in blinking mode for 1-2 hours at a time for about 4 months and have not yet had to change the small battery. The light uses little power. To change the battery, simply open up the sandwich-like cover, which is really two identical halves. The battery is then visible and changing it needs no explanation here. Durability/longevity: It's probably fair to say that this product is well-made material-wise, and that this doesn't necessarily translate to long-wearing, because of the specifics of its design. The light's encasement is a good, thick, rubber-type plastic (I'm guessing). You can drop it without fear of damaging it. It looks and feels substantial and not in any way flimsy or cheap. In fact, the switch is a little tough to press down, so much so that a 5-year-old child cannot turn the light on, and someone with arthritis would have a lot of trouble, too. This is a plus and a minus. The light has less debatable design problems, though, and this is why it loses a fifth star. Two things have gone wrong in the six lights that my family owns. The case can become loose and can open up unexpectedly, and also become loose enough so that the spring-loaded button switch cannot make contact with the battery and the light wont work. Moreover, even if the case is tight, repeated use may weaken the spring so that it takes a number of presses to turn the light on. And if this is good product test, my young son, who is not yet strong enough to press down on the light with his thumb to get it to go on, instead got it to work by biting on it. After a couple of such maneuvers, apparently, he wore down the spring and now turning the light on is a 50-50 proposition. Moreover, it's unclear how to remedy the damage, if this is at all possible. So the bottom line is this is useful, fun product with great value. Five stars for healthy adults, 4 stars (or less) for kids or for those whose hand-strength is compromised. Finally, shop around. I've found the price ranges from 5-7 dollars. Occasionally, some odd website for pets or novelties will sell the lights cheaper as a promotion or cheaper when purchased in quantity. ... show more
