One thing that I did not realize about this meter that you have to actually charge your capacitor so that they live to do the actual leak down and measurements. So for me that’s something I’m not used to doing and I’ve got to get over that for these larger starter motor caps. Not a big fan of large as I’ve got some that are the size of beer cans and they’re done literally in a six pack for my Studio strobes. Someone have eight packs worth of them so when they ark, they are blowing a hole in your tools. Pretty cool, but also pretty dangerous. You don’t know what you’re doing. I am not an expert and I have a lot to learn about measuring big capacitors as in starter capacitors so all I can say is I think it works well and it’s a great value and I would rather blow this up than my Fluke 172

--------------> Beginning of 2/24/14 Update 2/24/14 Update: I finally found the quote in the user manual which relates to the set of jacks just below the display: "In testing small capacitance, directly insert the capacitance [that should read capacitor] into the jack instead of using sensors for better accuracy." Granted, it's still not entirely clear exactly which holes are intended for the positive & the negative leads on the capacitor. --------------> End of Update Yes, as reported by others, the user manual sucks (but not so bad that you can't figure it out). More importantly, the meter is FINE & apparently VERY ACCURATE! I bought a new microwave oven capacitor rated at 0.86 uF (plus or minus 3%). I first zeroed the meter at the most sensitive setting (200 pF). I then set the meter on the 2uF setting & measured my new capacitor at 0.865 uF (0.6% higher than advertized and WELL within the plus or minus 3% advertized). The meter also readily & clearly confirmed the old capacitor was blown (shorted out).

This capacitor tester is easy to use and has a 9 volt battery in the box. There are no instructions for usage but check out youtube for detailed instructions. This is the only way to check if a capacitor is within rated specs. A second test is also needed to check if the capacitor will take and hold a charge and then release the charge. Do this test with caution or use an old style analog multimeter to safely perform this test. See youtube again for details.

All I have to say is if you need a cheap, broad ranged capacitor tester...this is the one. Great for the average homeowner too, just an inexpensive way to test your HVAC caps-a common fail point. As far as the negative complaint I see, I just do not understand it..the battery compartment door came off in like 10 seconds, very easy and straight forward installation, the one page instructions is all you need...I mean it is a cap tester lol...not a rocket engine. This is my second one, I keep one at the house and one in the test equipment case. For twenty or so bucks, you just cannot go wrong on this one, get you one.
