I bought this coffee as a treat to myself with an Amazon gift card that I got for my birthday. I am by no means a coffee snob but I know what I like. I was surprised when I opened this bag of Gran Riserva coffee beans because they appeared to be much lighter in color than the dark roast beans that I usually buy but I do like the mellow flavor of this coffee. However, because it is more of a medium roast in my opinion, it kind of gets lost when I used it in my mocha espressos. I decided to try mixing it with the French Roast that I normally use and it’s really quite delicious…a happy little accident! I bought this Lavazza coffee to use with my Philips 5400 Lattego espresso machine. Most often I drink cappuccinos from it but every once in awhile will make an espresso or ristretto con panna. These beans have a super smooth flavor and no bitterness. It's a little stronger than the super crema but it's not as strong as the gusto forte. It's a really nice full body flavor but I can't really say how it is just as straight espresso since I don't regularly drink it that way although I did try back-to-back espresso with these three roasts. Mainstream as in not meant to offend just about anyone (and I mean "anyone"): not too acidic, not too bitter, not too thick, not too sweet, not too creamy (despite the claim of a superior crema), not too expensive, and so on down the very middle of the road. It was an easy guess just from eyeing the not so very roasted beans: if this is "dark" then it's the color of dusk rather than midnight.
