Description

The Latin Percussion LP 234A Afuche Cabasa was designed to create rhythmic scraping sounds and patterns. The beads can be manipulated against the textured steel or the instrument can be spun or shaken for varying sounds, the likes of which can be heard in music all over the world. The LP Afuche/Cabasa provides more control and softer volumes. This instrument should be included in every percussionist's arsenal. AC code This ingenious instrument is constructed using endless loops of steel bead chain wrapped around a specially textured stainless steel cylinder. Wooden flanges enclose the cylinder and a wooden handle is attached to the bottom.

I bought this to replace an older other brand instrument that had rusted after the cat peed on it. I had always struggled with the smoothness of the previous unit. No such problems with this one. Smooth action, loud sound and ease of play. Not too big, not too heavy. Great instrument. Great tone. Handle isn't padded like my other one but is very comfortable. I am pleased with the quality and sound of this cabasa. I decided to buy one after hearing and trying one out at a jam session. I'm not a professional percussionist but enjoy playing a cajon and other percussion instruments to help set a beat during sessions. This instrument was within my price range and after a little research I bought it based on reviews. It adds variety to my sessions. There is a slight learning curve and a little practice to achieve a consistent smooth sound but within a few days I got the hang of simple repetitive sounds. The cabasa I tried at the jam session was slightly larger, 40 years old, did produce a better sound, but cost the owner way more than the current $29 price of this one. I think this one could be better with looser bead strings but there is no easy way to adjust them. I think with looser beads it would be easier to accomplish certain movements to produce different sounds. I know the beads won't loosen with age and use but maybe as I get used to playing it I can become better at replicating the moves I saw on YouTube instructional videos. I still believe it to be worth 5 stars as the quality and sound work for the purpose I bought it for. If I was a professional and using this in recordings or stage performances I would probably spend a lot more and try out various instruments before purchasing. If this is your first introduction to this type of instrument, as it was for me, I don't think you'll be disappointed choosing this one. ... show more

My friend on the drums, me on bass, and my cousin on the cabasa. We're playing the intro to Billie Jean. Sounds so good! This cabasa is loud--fills up the room. It is well-built. Smooth finish on the wood. It should last years. It's my first cabasa and i don't really know what makes a professional cabasa, but i don't see why this can't be used in the recording studio or in concert. 5/5 from me! ... show more

This thing makes the prototypical cabasa sound. It is the real deal. Other cabasas just don't sound right. A lot of instruments in percussion land are variable-size. Triangles can be big or small. So can snares, tambourines, bongos.. but I would argue that there is only one size and one pitch that best represents the cabasa space, and it is here. ... show more
