  • something I liked to call Russian Roulette
I have recently been in something of a book slump. Nothing sounds interesting to read; I can't even decide on a genre. I've always had a solution to slumps in the past, something I liked to call Russian Roulette. As you can guess, I pick a random unread book from my library and just go at it. I was discussing my slump with Queen J and she reminded me of the random book feature in Calibre (side note: Calibre is an organizational miracle). But I digress. The random book that Calibre decided for me was Last to Know, a book I've owned since April 2015. Reading the plot blurb, my initial thoughts were as follows: -Oh, a musician. -More specifically, a young musician. -Is this title just foreshadowing? -"When she finds out the truth..." this spells out trouble. -Do drummers really walk around with drum sticks all the time? So then I read it. Last to Know was quality writing - no grammatical errors or editing mistakes that I noticed. And yet, I just didn't connect with the characters. Then I started thinking (and maybe this is my downfall): am I just not connecting with these characters because they are so much younger than me? The typical reactions from these teenagers bugged me because it felt so immature, but is this not how I would have reacted when I was 17? I'm sure my mother would agree. To further this supposition I have about my age, I recently watched the movie The Edge of Seventeen. Enjoyable movie with equal amounts of cringe- and laughter-inducing moments. The downside? I wanted to scream at Nadine "Listen to your mother! Grow up! Clean your room!" I can only conclude this is a sign I have become a Real Life Adult™. Is this the end of my YA love affair? Or was this a one time aberration? I suppose we'll find out once Calibre randomly assigns me more YA. Now get off my lawn, you hooligans. ... show more

  • Great, quick, cute YA read
I got exactly what I wanted out of this book. A cute, low-angst, first-love, sweet, summer romance read. There was drama, but it definitely wasn't a conflict-driven plot. I listened to this book on audible and really enjoyed it. Actually listened to it in one sitting. I really liked that there was an ensemble feel to the book with all the other band members, but I wasn't overwhelmed with characters. My only complaint - and this would only affect listeners - is that the voice actor or sound editor - I'm not sure which - somtimes didn't leave a big enough pause between sections to indicate a break in time. So one line we'd be in a bedroom, and then the next line would be a totally different time and place, but there was no pause to indicate that and I would be totally confused, trying to figure out what was going on. If you're a fan of this author's other works, you'll definitely love this one too. ... show more

  • Great Summer Read!!
As a fan of the Trace + Olivia series, I was really looking forward to reading about the Willow Creek boys. I’ve heard so much about Maddox and Mathias, so I couldn’t wait to jump right into this one. Like every book I’ve ever read by Micalea Smeltzer, Last to Know had me hooked from the start, and I loved every minute of Maddox and Emma’s love story. After meeting at a local fair, seventeen-year-old Emma Burke finds herself living the best summer of her life with Maddox Wade. He’s cool, confident, gorgeous and charming, plays the drums and has a pet hedgehog named Sonic. Where Emma is hesitant and shy, Maddox is confident and thrill-seeking. Together, they are sweet and likable, everything it means to be young and in love. If you are a fan of YA Romance, I highly recommend Last to Know as a light summer read. You’ll enjoy the steady pacing and instant chemistry between the characters. There’s conflict towards the end that is bound to keep you up reading. I had a massive book hangover the next day. But it was totally worth it ; ) Originally Posted on lindsaymariemillerauthor.com ... show more

  • 4.5 Stars of Sweet
Emma and Maddox ' story is so sweet. There is a good pace and it's really clean... PG at worse. Watching these two fall in love was beautiful and how many first loves are. I like how the whole rock star thing was over shadowed by their story. You knew it was going to come out, but the story was not about keeping or spilling the secret. If you hadn't read the synopsis, you would think this was just a wholesome coming of age story. What I didn't like was when the secret came out how EVERYONE was on his side. Emma even mentioned it and she was right. That just didn't seam realistic, because it's not lime she was acting like a child or unreasonable. ... show more
