  • Quiet 20-inch Box Fan--Excellent
I want a 20-in box fan that, above all, is QUIET. It is to be used either in my bedroom or kitchen window or in my living/dining room, where I sleep and/or watch TV. Thus, low noise is of chief importance. From the information I have been able to find, including at the Lasko website (LaskoProducts dot com slash box-fans) and among consumer reviews, it's impossible to know just how loud any fan is. The Product Features of a similar model, Lasko 20-Inch Premium Box Fan 3-SPEED , includes "innovative Wind Ring air system provides high volume air movement...that focuses the air movement, increasing its velocity...30% more...than most standard box fans." Gambling that there is something to this more than just advertising hype, I figured this would mean that use of the low speed might be satisfactory hopefully most of the time. The model at hand here, the 3720, does not include as much in its description, but the Wind Ring grille looks to be exactly the same. And since I probably would have the fan in a window at least some of the time, I opted for this model having the Weather Shield. The other does not. When I turned the fan on, I was extremely pleased to find that it is indeed (what I subjectively would call) whisper quiet--that is, on the low speed. But even on the low speed, it does indeed push a nice breeze 15 feet across my living room that except on the hottest days is sufficient to keep me comfortable. Now, of course I can hear it, but it is quiet enough that I don't need to turn the TV up any. On the medium speed, I don't really need to turn the TV up, but I might two or three points at times. And on high, yes, it's fairly loud, but no box fan isn't. And even so, it's only about as loud as the low speed of another fan I have. So for my living/dining room purposes, this fan is excellent. :-) In my bedroom, on the upper floor that accumulates quite a bit more heat than the main floor, the head of my bed is only about 3 feet from the window but 5 feet from the TV. In the window I turn the fan so that it is blowing outward. (In another review I crossed somewhere, the person was saying some fans might blow well but don't draw well. I don't see so much logic in that; unless a fan creates or destroys air molecules, it draws exactly as much air as it pushes. I mean, where else could a fan get the air it blows other than from what it draws?) On low, again, the fan is quiet enough not to be an annoyance, but I do consistently turn the TV up a few points. The air it draws is not a stiff, focused column of air, but a soft, diffused movement of air. With my bedroom door open, and the door and window of another bedroom open to air from the cooler side of the house, within 5 minutes the hot air in my bedroom has been expelled and the room feels appreciably cooler and comfortable. In a bedroom I much prefer a soft displacement of hot air with cool rather than a big, hard blow. So here, too, I am very pleased with the quiet and performance. Then, wondering about the other model, the 3723, I ordered it. Side by side with the 3720, the airflows of the 3 speeds are comparable, if not differing only imperceptibly, if not identical; but the 3720 is noticeably quieter, not much, but enough to appreciate. I returned the 3723, my expense. Slim, light; perfectly balanced, no wobble or vibration even on Hi; metal cabinet is an appealing, subdued, neutral shade of slightly greenish gray that blends well. There's nothing not to like about this fan, other than the packaging. The fan is snug in its factory box, with no outer box/packaging and no Styrofoam spacers, bubble wrap, or other protection. I had to send one back due to deformation of the cabinet, but Amazon took care of the return shipping, thank you. The replacement I've received is fine. This model is $10 or $12 more than the other, but for my money, a little bit more quiet is what I'm after and worth the $12. I've already ordered a second and may order a third. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Great value - still going strong after 10 years of use.
We have been using the Lasko 20" Weather Shield fan year round for over 10 years. We placed it on our kitchen window sill, facing out, leaving the screen in place. We use it to exhaust cooking smells, as well as to create a mild breeze through the apartment in the warmer weather. It's strong enough to pull air in through the living room and bedroom windows, and out via the kitchen; creating the effect of cross-ventilation where our layout alone doesn't really provide it. I was shopping for a smaller fan for a relative, and looked this up in my order history. I was astounded to realize that we've had it for over 10 years. Status report after 10 years: 1 - Functionally - works just as well as ever in terms of creating a great air flow, quietness. The only thing that really seems to have worn is the knob to select low-medium-high speed. The switch mechanism is probably wearing out; once in a while I have to switch it between on and off a couple of times while nothing happens, before it actually turns on; and it doesn't really "click" into the different levels. But we're still using it, on a daily basis! 2 - Noise level - Quiet on low, but has a higher noise level on medium and high, as one might expect. This has not changed over the years. I believe that it has some kind of permanently sealed in lubrication; you never have to oil it. 3 - Cosmetically - Maybe a little lacking here because I've not been so diligent about cleaning it every year, and the paint on the frame may be wearing thin in a few spots. But you can unplug the fan, unscrew the front and back grids and give it a pretty good cleaning. As we use it in the kitchen, and in the city, it has greasy deposits on the grid and on the edges of the fan blade, but these do scrub off with a good cleaning. 4 - We left it in the apartment for 4 months during some renovations over 5 years ago, where it was used by the workmen, and expected it to be demolished when we moved back in, but although they used it every day, it was still going strong when we returned! I would definitely purchase this fan again if I needed to. It was a great value. ... show more
