  • Just a few Tweaks
Size: 108 Plant Sites(Standard Version)
4/3/2022 We ordered this system almost exactly a year ago. First off, it doesn't come with a reservoir, so we built one for it ourselves. Second, the sponges it comes with didn't work at all. We tried them in the first planting and all that happened was they developed algae which killed the plants. As a result we cleaned the system and switched to rock wool. Rockwool worked better, but only in the top row. We haven't had much success with anything in the bottom two rows and we have tried moving it to different places around the property to try and get it better light. The algae problem also came back, building up in the pipes due to the white pvc letting the sunlight through and water flow issues. We clean them out after each algae outbrak, which is also difficult due to the shape and nature of the pipes. In an effort to avoid this difficulty for the next season we decided to try and replace the white PVC with black, as this has worked in preventing algae growth in our other systems. However the PVC size is not standard and we haven't been able to find any matching sizes in stores and as a result we had to get more creative. Having seeds that are ready to be transferred into the system, and at this point having no system to transfer them into we decided to use black contact paper around the pipes to see if this helps. We are currently waiting on contact paper to arrive. Another note is there are no covers for the seed plugs, I tried to find some that would fit online and failed. Meaning the rockwool, or sponges if you're using those, is completely exposed to the light until your plants gets a little larger. We lost a lot of lettuce due to the algae issue that this caused, but I fashioned some myself by cutting plastic dividers to the correct lengths and slipping them around the plants to help prevent algae growth in those areas. I would suggest using EVA foam if you're going to do this yourself. My efforts were temporarily successful, but the growth of algae began happening within the tube itself, even though I had managed to prevent it in the rockwool. This season I'll be making covers out of EVA foam to try and prevent this, we will be covering the pipe with black adhesive vial or black contact paper, and we will be moving the system to a place with more sunlight to try and encourage the plants on the lower levels to live. Lids would do wonders for the parts of the system that we have nothing growing in. As it is I usually cover the empty holes so that sunlight cant get in, until the plants are ready to go in. As we have a mixture of crops we've tried to rotate in and out. Things which do better in the winter vs the summer. We've had the most success with black seed lettuce, though many types have grown well. Currently we are taking it apart again for cleaning before the next crop goes in. We've been using the leaves of the lettuce in the image all winter. However, as you can see in the image the hose pump has been corrupted with algae, and we'll have to either replace it or find a way to clean it. This is one of the most difficult things to fix as the material seems to have shrank around the pump, meaning it will likely need to be cut off so that we can clean it. On another note, I do not grow the rock wool inside the net cups for this system. That is near impossible as they will not stand upright like our other net cups do. Instead I grow them in the rockwool and put them in the net cups once they're ready to be transferred. However they also need to be cleaned from the algae build up, which is why some of them are missing in the image. As I said, we're taking it apart to clean. I was hoping we would be able to grow strawberries with it, but unfortunately none of them made it. We'll see how this next crop does, and hopefully I'll be able to update with a better review. Update: 4/12/2022 The black adhesive vinal worked great for algae prevention. We also managed to pick up a black hose that fits it at an auto parts shop, so we hopefully won’t have to worry about it building up in the hose anymore either. There was one thing I forgot to mention in my original post, that being that we didn’t use the original pump with this system, not because it failed but because we read others reviews on it failing and decided to get a slightly larger one and to save the pump it came with for another project. I also had the idea to grow peas on the bottom shelf since I’ve had a little success with them in Kratky systems before… The peas I picked were only supposed to get 2 to 3 feet tall if they grew at all. This was just an experiment I did for fun, with no expectation for them to get big at all… Currently the peas are about six feet tall, and I’ve had to build a secondary trellis out of spare pvc and twine. The roots have clogged the system a couple times. I’ve had to go in and pull out some of the roots, and to my surprise the peas just keep going as if nothing happened. This has inspired me to make another system, with larger pvc, and deep net cups, specifically for peas. Unfortunately I was unable to buy Eva foam to make covers with, but we’ve had such success starting seeds under grow lights inside that it hasn’t been necessary. Since we moved the systems to the front of the house and covered them in the black plastic, all three rows have been producing like crazy. We’ve gotten compliments from our neighbors on it and neighborhood kids have even asked us to explain how it works. When asked we let them know where we got the system from. Due to the fact that working on this system has helped inspire us to build other designs, and the fact that the peas have turned into a jungle through living in it. I’m going to give it another star. This is in spite of the extra efforts I had to put in to reduce algae build up. To be fair, that is out of the sellers control, humidity and region have a lot to due with the amount of algae build up any system will get, and as annoying as it is to clean, it’s because the environment is prime for growing. However, I will recommend to the sellers that they start working with black PVC and black hose, as it does reduce algae buildup and will help others who may have this issue in the future. I would also recommend an appropriately sized pipe cleaner with a long reach for those who are going to buy it. Plan ahead for the cleaning process, it is far easier with a pipe cleaner. You may even want to try a pressure washer, though I haven’t yet. The black covering is honestly the best preventative measure you could take for cleaning, though it is time consuming. Along with this update I will be adding in more pictures so you can see how much better the garden is doing now. We’ve had success with Collards, various lettuce species, kale, and peas. Though I wouldn’t recommend the peas unless you’re going to stay on top of them. They love it, but like I said, the roots keep clogging the system. In the end, thank you for a lovely garden. Please start selling this in black. ^.^ ... show more

  • Pretty good stuff with missing pieces (updated May 23)
Size: 108 Plant Sites(Standard Version)
Had it setup for just a tad less than a month. Overall, pretty good product. Not difficult to setup following instructions. Note, I didn't even bother with PVC glue, mine are only "Lego'd on" to test, no leak, so PVC quality and fit is pretty good. 1 star off because I had missing pieces from the package, so I had to make some modification. Other reviewers seem to report similar problems. My "feet" ended up shorter, and my 2nd shelf ended up lower than what they were supposed to be. Not a big problem if you are handy with tools, if not, maybe stay away (I didn't bother to contact the seller, maybe they will ship you the missing pieces, maybe not, I just started chopping). Additional notes: 1. The clear water pump tubing came with the package, you want to either cover it up (like I did with tin foil) or replace with black vinyl tubings. Because algae will grow, fast, given water, nutrients and light source. Mine sure did 2 weeks after setup, so the tin foil. You want to make sure your water resevoir is also blocked from light. 2. The package does not come with PVC pipes to build the "top shelf". I suppose more users than not will hang their lighting from the ceiling or expose to sunlight directly. I don't have those options, so I had to purchase additional PVCs from local big box store to construct the "top shelf" to hang my LEDs. The 1/2 inch from HD will fit, tightly, though you will need to cut some pieces and use a little elbow grease. 3. here's kicker: it's almost impossible to do a full water change in this setup without making a mess, as there's always water left inside the PVC tubes given the height of the exists. still should replace your reservoir at least once a month. UPDATE Sep 2022 after growing hydroponically with this system for about half a year, here's my update, reduction to 2 stars. here's why: I've been plagued with algae problems inside the system, after having already covered up the clear water supply tubing with tin foil and the water reservoir, the algae just keeps on growing inside the tubes. it got gradually worse from light green to deep dark green. Now, it's fair to say algae by itself is just nuisance if you can tackle it early on. I've tried adding hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and vinegar to alter the water ph, but nothing really affect the algae growth. then one night, I discovered, by putting the flash light on my cell phone at night against the PVC tubes, it turns out, the PVC tube itself block very little light penetration! so all those days and nights weather the sun or my LED lights, there were plenty of light penetrated thru the pvc pipes to provide all the power for algae to grow on the inside! I never knew this quality of PVC pipe before. here are my 2 options: either to take the system apart and paint each PVC piece with dark paint (possibly multiple coats), or wrap each piece with thick duck tape to block light penetration. So you have been warned. May 2023 the pump is now dead, going to buy a replacement, no big deal. also, for algae growth prevention, I did eventually took the rig apart (could be messy given the design), and painstakingly painted the entire rig, piece by piece, with spray paint. here what I found out: 1 coat of paint (I painted white first), almost no difference. 2 coat of paint (painted black on top of previous white coat), it blocks about 90% ambient light penetration except when you press your flashlight right up against the PVC pipe, it now penetrates just the shape of your flash light. 3 coat of paint (another coat of white on top of black) blocks light penetration 100%, pitch black on the inside. I tested it out and decided 2 coat of paint is enough work for me... it's been months, and I haven't had algae or mold problem growing inside the rig ever since. so that was a success. ... show more

  • I have harvested this system 4 times now.
Size: 108 Plant Sites(Standard Version)
I have been using this system inside my home since I purchased it. I have now harvested 6 times from this system. I found some small issues: 1- Algae started to develop - no covers for the net pots when not in use...I used packing tape and covered the top and then used electrical tape over the packing tape, trimmed to the size of the top and it works. Algae inside the water - I found a video about H2O2 (food grade) to help prevent algae...I have been using it now for about 3 months and the algae has not been much of a problem anymore. 5 drops H2O2 (Food Grade) to 1 gallon of your water. You can find this in Health food stores, in their freezers. 2- it does not come with reservoir...So I purchased a black15 gallon reservoir on Amazon. Cut the holes needed and it has been working fine. 3- I had a problem with leaking at first...I ended up gluing the system together. I love this system, but I also found some plants will clog the water flow because their roots are to dense and thick. I now only plant, blue crush kale, black beauty Kale, Chard and Tatosi - I grow them for about 45 days then I begin to harvest over a period of two weeks. This has worked very well for me...I do use Kracky for larger plants (Green cabbage, Collard greens, etc.) and I just purchased a Deep Water culture system to try for Tomatoes and bush beans. I live in a climate that is too short to grow for long periods of time, so growing in doors has been fun and exciting for me. I also had to invest in many grow lights, but it is worth it for the clean and pure food that I am growing for myself. ... show more

  • Works perfectly
Size: 108 Plant Sites(Standard Version)
This tower works great. This is 2 weeks since I set it up and planted in it. I had to make a reservoir and attach lights to the frame. But it's working great. No flow or overflow issues. I did fill the entire system up by hand and I cut about a foot off the hose to make it straight, but other than that, it's perfect. ... show more

  • May need some engineering after setup
Size: 108 Plant Sites(Standard Version)
My first order was missing 10 3.7mm pieces and timer/pump assembly. I live in the middle of nowhere. Shipping was prompt. Shipping of the replacement set was faster. I recommend a soft headed mallet for assembly. The 3.7mm pieces are integral to all joints. The second set did not fit together as well as the first set did. Came with no instructions on waterflow of pump and an idea of how much water the system needs to function properly. I had a knowledgeable friend that told me it looked like a 5 gallon system. This knowledge was key to my setup. A 5 gallon bucket is too tall and too shallow to run the full system. Directions say nothing about either of these things. Full set up has the drain pipe at 19cm long from outside top of spout with 11cm to the floor. Give or take, hence the mallet. System ran with just water on 15 minute water in cycle, 30 min off, with no spill for 20 hours. First tube to the brim in each port, (took a level to the structure, still full on first intake tube.) Got up this morning to the second rung spilling over everywhere. Soon enough that it was only a couple of liters (I am using large under bed rolling storage as resevoir for testing. Spans most of the setup.) I assume it was the structure settling as nothing is glued in. Sysnopsis: The PVC is not consistant in fit. Pieces may be missing or have access. The ports between tubes and levels seem, in my set, too small for the pump flow. Great set if you done mind getting a mallet and a level out for setup. May also need slight engineering. Slight. ... show more

  • Awesome - but empty before moving
Size: 108 Plant Sites(Standard Version)
So far, I love this thing. It's been set up with seedlings about 6 weeks, and I just ate my first strawberries. Meanwhile, starts in soil at the same time are not even flowering. It is growing algae inside the tubes and hoses. The pieces are not glued - drain all water before moving it. It will come apart and spill everywhere. No, you can't just be really careful. Would have liked more height between the rows - may have to drain it and add longer pieces of pvc. ... show more

Size: 108 Plant Sites(Standard Version)
Unit is great if your not growing anything other then leafy green, herbs, and other small plants. I wanted more space so I built a larger stand and made a few additional tweaks. The clear hose will grow algae so I enclosed it in PVC to keep the light out. I also have taped slots not in use, but I plan to make plugs for the empty slots, would be awesome if they were included. Also I see another owner wrapped in black to further keep light out and I may consider doing the same. ... show more
