  • Can't believe I've lived without this!
Color: BLUE
I was winding my hanks around the backs of two chairs and it would take a good 1/2 hour to complete. I bought a large amount of Egyptian cotton yarn some time ago on clearance and it's been sitting in a box because I just didn't have it in me to wind 20+ hanks....until now!! I was able to use the swift and winder to make 8 cakes in 45 minutes! It's worth every penny because of the time savings. Just a note about the winder coming loose--if you wind too quickly, it will not stay clamped. Also, the metal threader/tension rod tends to vibrate when winding, also causing it to come unclamped, so I used a piece of storage tape and taped it down to the counter I had it on. It worked beautifully and now I can wind fast and it doesn't go flying off! I saw other reviews of people winding skeins and I'm not sure why you would do that. This is really only designed for the hanks and I wouldn't waste my time with other balls. Highly recommend because of the cost and time savings overall; plus, all those beautiful sale hanks will now be of use to me! ... show more

  • Essential for Anyone with a Passion for Hand-Dyed Yarn
Color: BLUE
I will admit, I have a bad habit: I buy way too much hand-dyed yarn. And as anyone who buys hand-dyed yarn knows, it more often than not comes in hanks, which look deceptively easy to wind. And as anyone who has tried to wind yarn by hand from a hank knows, what one can look at and think "hmm, this will take me 15 minutes to do!" will, without any rhyme or reason and despite one's best efforts, always inevitably turn into an inexplicable mess of knots and tangles that has you, even an hour later, cursing yourself for thinking winding the yarn would be a pleasant or easy task. That was the situation I found myself in several weeks ago, when a pair of lovely skeins of yarn I had thought would take just a few minutes to wind had turned into a few hours worth of work and had involved cutting the yarn, several times, because the more I attempted to untangle it the more that the fibers felted together, making it look like a stringy, raggedy mess before I even got to work with it. My precious cashmere blend, turning into nasty little felt rings! I had previously researched a yarn winder while under severe duress from the same misguided task several years ago (I never learn), but at the time, all of the available options were several hundred dollars in price-- a justifiable purchase for a yarn store who winds skeins as a customer courtesy, perhaps, but not for me, a lowly home knitter on a budget. However, when this time I looked, I happened across this listing for the LAMXD Yarn Ball Winder. Though I wondered how effective a yarn winder for such an inexpensive price could be, I looked at my growing collection of unwound hanks (many bought on clearance when my friendly local yarn store went on clearance as the owner retired, much to my despair), did some mental math, and decided that if, even if I only found function from the umbrella yarn holder attachment and needed to wind by hand, the savings in keeping my blood pressure down from no longer needing to stop every few minutes to untangle things would be well worth it. I can say with utter certainty, however, that, dozen of wound yarn balls later, this is one of the best purchases I have ever made. In the span of an hour (how long it would take me on average to wind, untangle, wind, untangle more, cut the yarn apart and then tie it together and continue to wind it, untangle (you get the deal)) a single skein of yarn, I am able to painlessly wind four or five, with a single hand, while reading. In the span of an afternoon, I had managed to wind my backlog of almost two-dozen skeins of yarn, all of which now sit neatly in my stash, awaiting use for future projects. Never again need I hold back from buying a yarn I love for fear of the headache transforming it into a ball it might cause me. This may be a blessing or curse, considering how expensive hand-dyed yarn can be... But I will choose, for now, to call it a blessing. ... show more

  • Upgraded review (Original : “This swift is terrible...Buyer beware!”)
Color: BLUE
I’m leaving the original review intact, made in the middle of winding my first hank of yarn, about an hour ago. However, in fairness and because the original review was kind of savage, I’ve upgraded to two stars instead of one, because if you figure out the learning curve on this set, it’s serviceable and not quite as bad as my original review would lead one to think. Pro Tips: Don’t set the winder and umbrella up directly across a table from one another, especially at a distance. Set them up catty-cornered, at about a 90° angle from one another. Closer together is better. This allows for easier tension control and prevents the swift from spinning too fast due to its own inertia. You must keep a lot of manual tension on the yarn with your free hand in order to control the umbrella spin speed. The stationary tension loop of the winder does not provide sufficient tension to keep the umbrella under control. Keeping the hand that is controlling the yarn tension close to the spinning umbrella seems to be helpful to slow things down to a manageable speed. Even if things seem to be moving smoothly, don’t try to go fast. It just doesn’t work. Slow and steady is the way to go. It takes this set at least 10 minutes to achieve what a good quality swift and winder can do in under 5 minutes (this is accounting for breaks to catch up yarn slack, etc.), but if you don’t push it and you’re not too picky about how pretty your cakes turn out, it works. I’m still disappointed because I wanted pretty cakes to admire while I am working with high quality yarn, and I didn’t get pretty. They’re ugly and look like a toddler wound them. But they pull smoothly from the center, which is really all that is required. I still can’t quite bring myself to recommend this set, because much of the criticism from my original review is valid, but if you’re on a budget and patient, it can work. However, if you can swing it, go for a high quality wood swift and a quality winder. I plan to, in the near future. I’d give this 2.5 stars if I could, but I can’t, and I can’t bring myself to give it 3, so 2 stars it is. Still buyer beware, because it’s a lot more trouble than it should be, but it can work if you work it. Original review: I’ve used good wooden umbrella swifts before, and had no trouble even with a small cheap winder like in this kit. But this umbrella swift is WAY too light to spin properly. There’s no heft to it, so no matter how you try to control the tension on the yarn, it soon begins spinning out of control. Even if you go painfully slow, it still spins way faster than the winder is able to go, so you either get yarn tangled in the umbrella, or you have stop before you get tangled, wind in your slack, and start cranking again. It’s a huge pain. Additionally, there are metal bits sticking out all over the thing that your yarn can snag and get hung up on if you are not very, very careful. Unfortunately I’m way past the return date on this turkey so I will have to suck it up and keep it. But it’s hard to express how much I hate this umbrella POC right now. I’m winding a $50 hank of pearl colored silk blend yarn, and it’s taken me 10 minutes, three tangles, and so much slack at one point that it fell in the floor and I stepped on it(!!!). And I’m only about a third of the way through the hank. Already over it and wondering whether to attempt the other five hanks with this turkey of an umbrella, or just give up and take it all to the yarn shop next week. Or do it by hand. I will say the little winder is decent. I’ve used it without the umbrella, on barfy , factory-wound skeins that are supposed to be center pull, and while it’s a little on the rickety / cheap side, it works fine. I don’t use it often but I imagine if you don’t abuse it, it should last a while. But the umbrella is a deal breaker for the whole package at this price. If you want a cheap little winder, get one somewhere else for about $25, and then invest in a decent umbrella. You’ll be sorry if you get this. I DO NOT recommend this kit AT ALL. ... show more

  • -1 star for no instructions
Color: BLUE
If you are like me and many other people who knit or crochet, chances are you have bought yarns that come in hanks that you need to turn into a ball or cake yourself. If you try to do it without tools, it's going to take hours and tears to wind them yourself. Trust me. I've been there. This winder will wind your hank of yarn into a perfect yark cake in less than 10 minutes, without all the troubles of tangles and knots. It didn't come with instructions of how to set it up, but it is easy enough to figure out. A must have if you are into hand-dyed yarns! ... show more

  • Worth it
Color: BLUE
I was lying to myself saying “I can just hand wind it’s fine and it’s fun”. After winding one cake with this I changed my tune and immediately caked my entire stash.
