The Kryptonite Evolution Mini-5 U-Lock features a 13 mm hardened max performance steel shackle with a double deadbolt anti-rotation design that resists bolt cutters and twisting leverage attacks. The lock’s disc-style cylinder with center keyway is protected by a vinyl coating and is pick and drill resistant. The keyway also features a sliding dust cover to protect the cylinder from dirt and debris when not in use. It includes three stainless steel keys with an ergonomic design to reduce torque and keep them from bending or breaking. Needed a more compact lock to secure my bike. Have a late 1980s road bike I use to commute. The Mini 5 comes with a nice mount to affix the lock to the frame and it's not in the way. I can keep this lock on the bike all the time and have it handy for quick stops. However, when I am leaving my bike a while I use 2 U Locks, one which is larger than the Mini 5 that allows locking the bike to a rack. So far the mount has worked out. I had OnGuard U Locks with mounts and those mounts eventually cracked. Kryptonite's mount for this lock appears sturdier. ... show more

    • Great Lock, Flimsy Holder
The lock itself is small but sturdy. If you're locking up something small like a scooter then it's great. If you're trying to lock up a bicycle then you need a bigger lock or you won't be able to lock the wheel and frame together to the post. The only real gripe I have with this thing is the storage holder that attaches to your vehicle for transport. There are a couple of issues with it. First and foremost it's flimsy. Seriously it fell apart twice on me just trying to attach it to the scooter. I eventually just ripped the stupid thing off and threw it away. It's held together by a flimsy square lock washer that easily fits through the hole that it's not supposed to. The lock washer bends and flexes easily, so the slightest pressure causes the locking mechanism to separate. Secondly the holder's release mechanism doesn't work worth a darn. 90% of the time you will have to fight with it for a minute or two before you can finally get it to release the lock. Not something you want to do every time you want to lock up your vehicle. If you don't care about attaching this to your vehicle then it's fine. If you do need to attach it for transport then find a different lock. ... show more

Purchased in October, and within 60 days, the lock mechanism went from smooth to rough, and even after lubricating it with the same lube I've used with success on previous Kryptonite locks, it is still rough and also completely freezes up in the cold even after 48+ hours of room temp dry time. Although, it begins working again after sitting in the cold for another 24 hours. I was disappointed when my previous kryptonite evolution lock stopped working after 8 years, and was looking forward to the two-sided locking and the newer keyhole protector. However, as I've quickly learned, the keyhole cover does not protect the mechanism from degradation, but it does add yet another moving part that can freeze shut. So I changed my keyhole cover strategy from open only when locking/unlocking to closed only when riding, but that also didn't prevent the lock from freezing up both on the mechanisms and on the sidewalls of the lock where the non-moving parts touch. On the two-sided locking mechanism, this may improve security, but it doubles the amount of force required to pry it open on a cold day. It also doubles the amount of force required by the key to open the lock, as it is acting on two mechanisms rather than one. I'll be looking for the older one-sided u locks in the hope that I can have a less unreliable winter-time lock. ... show more

I got this lock to secure my front wheel to my frame. No one has tried to steal my bike wheel or bike so far, so I can’t comment on how it holds up. However, it feels sturdy and I got it because I trust the disc detainer core.

    • The Mini-5 is a great second lock
I bought this to secure my front wheel to my frame when locking up. The Mini-5 doesn't have enough internal space to lock your back wheel and frame to a post, but if you're looking for something to lock your front wheel to frame or frame to post this does the trick and is a really sturdy little lock. I'll probably order the Mini-7 to replace my old Kryptonite Series 2. I definitely won't miss the hook foot. ... show more

    • Looks may be deceiving!
I went looking for a new lock in which to lock up my scooter to a pole. I had already gotten a lock to stop anyone from driving off with it. But some people get creative and will lift up a light scooter and put it in a van, and then say bye bye scooter! So I bought myself a kryptonite lock, this kryptonite. Maybe I missed something but the lock I got I soon discovered was a mini-kryptonite. Looked larger at this site! There will not be any affixing of any scooter to a pole or bike rack! If the scooter wasn't supposed to be delivered shortly I would have sent it back! For a few more bucks I could have gotten the kryptonite lock I wanted. So the moral of this review is to read all the descriptions. Look at the measurements if any are offered. Size does matter! ... show more

Update after 2 weeks of filing claim of the bike lost. No response from Kryptonite. I am really doubt if this will honor this protection program. Very disappointed.
