This Via Velo U-lock is a solid option if you want something secure without spending too much. The lock itself feels strong and well-built, and it gives me confidence leaving my bike locked up in public. The included cable is a nice bonus. It makes it easy to secure both wheels or extra parts instead of just the frame, which is really useful. I also like that it comes with a mount so you can attach it to your bike and not have to carry it around. I have to say, this lock is absolutely incredible. Someone tried to steal my scooter today and did everything they could to break through it. They damaged my scooter, but the lock itself was completely untouched. It held up perfectly and did exactly what it was supposed to do. This is honestly one of the best purchases I’ve made. If you’re looking for a lock that can actually protect your scooter, this one is the real deal. Highly recommended.

A secure bike lock should have a shackle of at least 13 mm, which locks into the crossbar on both sides. The Via Velo U-Lock is a robust bike lock with 14 mm shackle, which fulfills these criteria of a secure bike lock. Of course one has to find a compromise between weight and security, U-locks are generally heavy and the Via Velo U-Lock weighs 3.2 pounds/1.45 kg. It comes with a bike mount, so you don't have to carry the heavy lock in your backpack. A common problem with U-Locks is that they're not very flexible and depending on the size you might not be able to lock your bike to bigger obstacles. This U-lock has a regular size, I wouldn't go for a smaller size. The key hole has a cover to keep dirt out. I'm not sure if it's as weather proof as stated, I wouldn't let it hang outside all day year around. The 10 mm cable is a nice feature to secure the second wheel. Another nice feature, it comes with a set of three keys with a unique code, so you can reorder keys if you lost them. Many reviews mentioned the lock mechanism is jamming or the keys are failing. I observed sometimes the keys won't go in and out smoothly, some keys were worse than others. Via Velo advises you to take good care of your bike lock and clean it with WD40 from time to time. By now it worked just fine, but I'm afraid I'll end up with my bike stuck somewhere. If you have the money, you might want to look for something more reliable. All in all I would rate this bike lock average. If you take good care of it and clean it regularly, it might last you long. UPDATE: My lock unfortunately did not fasten in the bike mount correctly, so I wasn't able to use it and had to carry the heavy lock in my backpack. Via Velo sent me a replacement and the new mounting system works. I found the mechanism to be a little bit stiff and some reviews complained about breakage. Yet, I'm happy to have the weight off my back. And the generous customer service deserves a fourth star.

Style: U Lock with 6FT Cable
This locks is very suitable for my purposes. The price was right and the quality seems good. I like the fact that it is covered with a rubbery material that keeps it from scratching my bike. The mount for the bike is fine but its a bit of effort to get the cable secured with the lock in such a way that it does not interfere with riding. On my bike I have a basket and usually throw the lock in the basket in transit so this is not such a problem for me. We bought two of these locks. One for me and one for my partner. He dropped the key for his in the water beside our boat at the dock which means he is down to one key. I saw this lock on sale on Amazon the other day for about $20 but did not order another one like I should have. If it goes on sale again Ill get my partner another lock and use his old one to lock a shopping cart to the door handle of one of those people who take up two parking places to protect their beautiful cars from the unwashed masses. For this alternative application a spare key, or even one key, would not be necessary. Update October 9: As I mentioned above my partner dropped one of the keys for his lock into the water beside our boat. When the folks at Via Velo read my review they immediately contacted me for my mailing address and the key code. They shipped spare keys, from China, for his lock. They work fine. I had the new keys in less than a week so now we don't have to worry about breaking out the hacksaw if my partner dropped his remaining key in the drink. In the time since I wrote my original review I have used this lock dozens of times and when I lock my bike at the gym I look at the other bikes with the $100 locks on them and cant see the difference between those and my Via Velo lock. When you add to the quality of the product the obvious commitment to customer service this company has, I am enthusiastic about what other products these folks might offer.

I am currently using this lock for my scooter. Easy to lock and unlock, and, more importantly, it is sturdy and safe for long periods of leaving my scooter out in a campus with so many cases of bike stealing.

Style: U Lock with 6FT Cable
I love this lock. My bike has been my only transportation since August of 2018, and that's how long I've had my lock. You can twist a section on the lock to cover the keyhole and prevent dirt from getting inside, but even without using that cover, the lock is just as smooth to lock and unlock as it was the day I bought it. The lock has some scrapes around the places where the U-shaped piece of metal meets the lock mechanism itself, so it has clearly done its job and prevented somebody from stealing my bike. The cable is also nice, although I don't use it often because I don't want the added weight. My only con when it comes to this bike is the mounting system. I'd give that three stars. Over time as I rode my bike on bumpy city roads and used the mounting system, it loosened up and stopped holding the lock firmly in place (allowing it to rotate while mounted), so it would either bang against the bike or my legs. Then, about a year ago, the mounting system broke off mid-ride. The section that broke was not the piece that attaches to the bike, it was the piece attached to the lock itself. This is a small con, though, and doesn't matter too much to me as I carry the lock in my backpack most of the time anyways. I would definitely recommend this lock to anyone, and I would definitely buy it again!

I didn't expect the lock to be so strong. The cable isn't anything fancy, but could use it separately if you wanted and maybe use a combination lock with it. The lock itself could be used alone as well. This is a keyed lock, so you must remember the key. There are 3 keys and a very nice key tag to go with one that even has the qr code for the lock company. The instructions are well done and written in clear English. There are cheaper locks out there, but I am glad I didn't go that route.

This Bike U Lock with Cable (BULwC) is incredible. It’s cheap, but incredibly strong and very reliable. Comes with 3 keys, which is a really cool little bonus feature Via Velo added that they didn’t need to, especially for the price. One rainy evening, my carbon gravel-bike was locked up with one of these BULwCs in our parking garage when a thief broke in with a pair of Heavy Duty Bolt Cutters (HDBC) with my bike in his line of sight. Turns out this BULwC wasn’t having it. Said thief then decides he will mourn his failure and leave the parking garage, in a fit of rage with HDBC strapped to his Jansport. 8 hours later, at 4am, it was seen on camera that said thief came back. But this time with the big gun. He walks up to my bike and decides to hit the lock with a quick 1-2 with the Heavy Duty Dewalt Power Grinder (HDDPG) and saws right into this BULwC. 30seconds into it, after being blasted by a steady stream of sparks and metal chunks... he cuts through the BULwC. Thief then goes to grab his new toy from the rack but!.. he realizes the bike isn’t coming off. It won’t budge. He then has to make a second cut into the BULwC with the HDDPG. Incredible. This time the BULwC falls off and he is able to reap the reward of all that hard work. He stashes the HDDPG in his Jansport and rides into the night never to be seen again. This item is incredible. You can buy 13 of these BULwCs for the price you would pay for this quality anywhere else. Do yourself a favor and buy this, and let your bike know/feel it is safe (physically, probably not emotionally) whenever you decide to ghost it... unless your thief is strapped with a HDDPG. Would definitely recommend this product to family and friends.
