After using this lock for over a year it is progressively more difficult to lock and unlock. Switching to Abus. Update: Works fine after adding WD-40

Okay, I realize my review headline represents a logical fallacy, but this actually is a very sturdy lock that gives me confidence when securing my bike outside of stores. Anybody who has seen the Lock Picking Lawyer on YouTube knows that wafer style locks require special tools and skills to pick open, neither of which your average thief is likely to possess, so that's security feature number one. Security feature number two on the 712 model is the stout chain which can not be easily cut without employing large, conspicuous tools which will likely draw unwanted attention to any miscreant attempting to abscond with your wheeled conveyance. I wouldn't want to trust it for overnight storage or in especially shady parts of town, but for use outside of a busy store during a 30-minute shopping run, it does the job nicely. The mechanism on my lock has remained smooth and easy to operate, but I'm also careful not to force it (per product instructions), and a drop or two of oil every few months keeps everything in good working order. The chain is just long enough to go through the back wheel and frame and around a bike rack, so I use a Kryponite cable looped through the lock chain to secure the front wheel. ... show more

The lock and chain is bad ass. Some people wanna say it's weak or the key is jammy but that happens when it's not properly inserted. I noticed that and now I make sure you ndo that and I have no issues. It is so fat and thick yet the weight was not even bad. It wraps around my frame easy . It really looks nice with the sleeve that covers the chain. It would take along to cut this and they would need some tools that would look to obvious ๐Ÿ˜‚. This and a cable bike chain would make it more of a challenge. If you on a budget then this chain is price and quality. The delivery might be a day but it's worth the wait. ... show more

    • Poorly made lock mechanism

I had hoped that the complaints about the lock not working well were just idiotic misunderstandings, but the fact is, the lock does *not* operate smoothly. There's no excuse for the shoddy workmanship of the lock. I can easily understand someone getting frustrated and giving up, when trying to lock or unlock this thing, because I unlocked it, then had trouble getting it to lock again...the very first time I took it off my bike and put it back on. I found that you have to kind of rattle the key and shake the lock part of the time, just for the simple unlocking and immediate re-locking of it, without taking it anywhere. I wish I'd spent more, and gotten another Asus, like the one I bought previous to this. That one works smoothly...why can't Kryptonite get this right? If my wife and I go cycling together, I'm not going to bother carrying this lock with me, because I really don't want to find myself stuck, unable to unlock my bike when it comes time to go home. At least the chain seems to be of decent quality...but that may be a case of appearances deceiving--there are some bad chains for sale on Amazon, which look very much like this, but cost less. I'm not willing to destroy the chain, just to test it. ... show more
