  • A solid reliable ball winder for beginners
Color: Purple
The media could not be loaded. A great ball winder at a good price for beginners to start with. As you evolve, there are other smoother and larger cake winders, but this is a solid win. Easy to set up and use.

  • Yarn Caker
Color: Purple
The yarn caker is easy to use. It is a great way to keep all the leftover yarn from projects, nice and neat!

  • Works Great!
Color: Purple
I have never used a ball winder before, but I decided I wanted one to go with the yarn holder I received for my birthday. I like this very much! It's simple enough to assemble, though it doesn't have instructions and I needed to look up a video to figure out how the table grip fit to the rest of the unit. The video was easy to find (there's a QR code, link, and searching it on Youtube also brings it up right away), easy to follow, clearly explained, and I was winding in no time! I made yarn cakes of different weights and sizes! Much easier to store and place on the yarn holder for a project! I think the only thing I'm not a great fan of is the fact that I don't know how to put it back in the box well. That can easily just be me being silly, but I wanted to keep it in the box so it's safe and sound (and all the bits are together). I didn't take a star off for that - I have no idea how common it is to keep it in the box after you're done using it for the day. One star taken off because I needed to look up a video to assemble it - there are no instructions in the box. But it was a simple and clear video so I don't mind in the end. Happy winding and crafting! ... show more

  • Works very smoothly!
Color: Purple
I bought this because I could not find my previous ball winders. I love KnitPicks and have found the company's yarns and tools to be top-rate. It isn't completely necessary to have a ball winder, but it makes balling skeined yarn much easier. I used this one in combination with a very old umbrella swift which had belonged to a friend's mom or grandmother (thank you, Marie!). It was a bit challenging, figuring out how to use these two in combination, but I did figure it out. Pros: the winder works very smoothly. The handle resists moving in a counter-clockwise motion. You can only turn it to the right. The instructions for setting up the winder are on the box. The pieces are very sturdy, even the plastic ones. Cons: Once assembled, the winder does not fit back in the box it came in for storage, because the metal yarn guide arm will not fold back down. AND you must fold the yarn guide arm up and into place to use the winder. This is a minor annoyance, since I will need to find another box and cut up the box it came in to keep the information in one place. One tip for new users: after winding the yarn, I roll up the paper/cardboard tag with the yarn/fiber info, etc., and slide it into the middle of the new yarn cake as I slip it off the spindle. You could also tape the info card to itself around the spindle, but the card with the info for these particular skeins was smaller than the necessary diameter. ... show more

  • Well Worth The Price
Color: Purple
Great! So glad I purchased this. Got it for a great price and it has very well paid for itself. If you're anything like me and a "yarn hoarder" you have half skiens and disheveled skeins of yarn that need some love and care. This has helped me organize as I was able to debunk alot of my yarn. Thought I'd snap a picture of a before and after. Both yarns are the same brand and weight just different colors. I find winding soothing while I watch TV or wind down from the day. It's literally helped me get motivated and stay on track for projects since I'm constantly touching and viewing my yarn. It's defined fun to use and storing is very easy as well. Personally I use a TV dinner tray and clip the winder on the edge and it stays on there. I fold the tablenand store it in the closet when I'm done and that way set up is very easy. There is a little noise to it but not a nuisance. Also, I noticed when the skien hits a certain size (on the larger side, you'll get a weird clicking noise. It's not contant but it is very noticeable. Hope this helps. ... show more

  • 2 internal gears broke, not unusable, but extremely loud.
Color: Purple
She works well. But after several months of use, I've had 2 teeth on the gear that have snapped clean off from inside. It became extremely loud and jumps while I wind yarn. More petite yarns tend to slip off and get thrown off the winder while it's spinning. Otherwise, it's easy to use and still makes great yarn cakes, but I wish it held up better. ... show more

  • Good for partial skeins / smaller cakes
Color: Purple
I've been crocheting for about 15 yrs now, and I'm seriously confused on what took me so long to buy a yarn winder? So glad I got this one! The winder, while mainly plastic, seems to be pretty solid. It clamped to the edge of my table securely. I spent about an hour playing with it, and found that a moderate speed worked best for me , holding The yarn with medium tension and slightly angled downwards seemed to make the tightest and most uniform cakes. I was hoping to be able to get a whole (350ish yd) skein into one cake but it sort of wouldn't let me over feed it. So one normal sized skein turned into 2 cakes of worsted weight yarn. That said, I doubt I will use this to convert brand new skeins into cakes, but for the skeins that start to get floppy, hollow, and then become a messy tangle about midway thru... this thing is gonna be perfect! Pictures show a before (super messy skein of half used yarn) and the cakes I turned it into in under 5 mins. If nothing else, that's worth the purchase ! Really the only downside is that the cakes it produces , while about 4" in diameter, only hold approximately 200 yds of worsted weight yarn... and I wish they held more. ... show more
